The greatest Cardinals team and more.....
If this has been posted before please let me know. I searched under greatest, best , cardinals, cards, redbird, team all-time and didn't find a fan post with this topic which is which Cardinals team do you think is the best ever.... and more.
I have several questions, which team do you think is the greatest is Cardinals history? Which one is the best you've seen in your lifetime. Which team was your favorite and which year's team do you think gets honorable mention for being near great, but because they lost in the playoffs or series will never be looked at as great?
Below is a poll for which team in the history of the Cardinals do you consider the greatest?
This is my first fan post here so I hope it generates some conversation and comments. I look forward to seeing what you all think!

I would vote for 2004
They won 105 games. Edmonds, Rolen and Pujols all had MVP type seasons. They had a great series with the Astros to get to the World Series, with JEFF SUPPAN winning game seven. They then faced the Red Sox, who had just come back from 3-0 to be the Yankees, in the WS. It really was destiny that the Sox were gonna win it all.
2004 needs consideration
The were the most exciting of the ’04 ’05 ’06 run…
Also a small tip, naming a post “If this has been posted before…” is a bad title
Just go for it and name it what you want, and if its been posted before people will let you know, trust me.

thanks for the tip! :) I'll change the title...

My favorite team is 1985
Probably the most disappointing team, but my favorite team. Two 20 game winners, a lights out closer. Vince Coleman stealing 110 bases. Pendleton, Ozzie, Willie, Herr, and Coleman were all switch hitters… just an incredibly talented lineup. The MVP, the ROY, and Ozzie’s home run…
1985 and 2004
I believe those were the best Cardinals teams of their respective Herzog and LaRussa eras. However, both of them lost the World Series. I didn’t think the 1982 world championship team was better than the 1985 club, and I certainly didn’t think the 2006 championship team was anywhere close to being as good as the 2004 club was.
Those great teams from the 1960’s played before I was born.

Wow!
Someone seriously voted for 2006. Just curious, how is an 83 win club better than some of the other great teams above?

it's all about the bling
i guess
I'm going to go try to find a puppy and kick it. - Brad Thompson AND THAT'S A WINNER!
i know, i should have been clearer
what i meant was because they won the bling when people actually saw it, that team means more to them than those older posters who remember the teams from the 60’s & 40’s. those under 40 really have a hard time remembering great Cards teams who have won it all. so i’m sure the 06 squad, especially how they won it, is really special to a lot of fans. so they rank them higher.
fwiw, i’m 31 & i voted for 67

Take a look at the 1944 rotation and tell me the argument against those guys

Playing devil's advocate
I agree that it’s a pretty impressive rotation, but one could make the case that several players were involved in the war at the time. Several of the players didn’t really belong in the majors.
I've heard ppl blow off the '44 Cards because of the war also....
While there is truth to the war affecting things, the Cards were able to fill in their holes with players who were better than what other teams could fill theirs in with. The basic core of this team was still there from ‘42 also so this I think is a excellent team and picking it as the best as many have I feel is legitimate despite the critics of this team. :) Your devil’s advocacy brings up a whole new topic for discussion in a future fan post. Great point to bring up!
I did choose the ’42 edition although I love the Gashouse Gang of ’34 the most of all the Cardinals teams in history for they were a cast of unique characters.

How about the 1887 team?
95-40 Scored 1131 runs, Allowed 761 runs.
it was an Amazing team they scored 8.2 runs a game, which was nearly 1.5 runs more that any other team. Had the great Bob Caruthers who went 29-9 pitching and finished with a 1.010 Ops playing outfield, when he wasn’t pitching. They also had two players finish with over 160 runs scored which lead the league.

Weren't the rules radically different back then?
I know at one point in the 19th century, baseball was played first to twenty runs.
They say that it's never too late, but you don't get any younger...
Your half right,
When baseball was first being played it was first to 21 wins. Then in 1857 they changed it to the 9 innings that we have today.

1942
That team was 106-48 and beat a Joe DiMaggio-led Yankees team 4 games to 1 in the World Series.

The Cardinals defeat Ruth and the Yankees for their first ever World Series title

Speaking of the 1926 Cardinals
Depending on your political orientation, you will either find this photo either profoundly elating or deeply, deeply disturbing.

what a great ballclub this one was.......
The three years of 42, 43, 44 were a great run and this ballclub had some great players on it. :) This was my choice also. :) I can’t even imagine being on a ballclub and beating the Yanks of that era with DiMaggio in a World Series. What a moment that had to be for those Cardinals! Of course, we had Stan the Man!!! No small fry, even next to the great DiMaggio.

The Cardinals seem to have several teams like the '26 Cards...
who came into the Series as underdogs in the Series, yet went on to win.
The 1926 team , the 1931 Cardinals who beat the heavily favored A’s of Philadelphia, the 1942 Cardinals who beat the powerhouse Yanks, the 1964 Cardinals who were underdogs to the Yankees again and of course, the 2006 Cardinals who were supposed to be dead meat for that team from Detroit….
I’m surprised no one picked the 1931 Redbirds yet, for that was a huge upset.

There was a "Tournament of Champions"
earlier this year on VEB.
But I can’t remember who won it. I know the sim ran in to April and everyone lost interest.
I’ve looked through the archives and the last post I found mentioning it is here.
Furthermore, this page stops in the semifinals.
Does anyone else remember which team won it (or have a link)? I’ve only looked through lboros’ posts in April, so maybe az, rb, or chuck posted the final results and I missed it.

The TOC was never finished.
I started it but had to drop out ude to a family emergency and subsequent vacation. I need to email LB to finish the series…
MHO on the greatest Cardinals team…
Of the Champions 1886 and 1942 far and away.
Of the pennant winers 1985.
2004 was agreat team, but not built for a short series.
The St. Louis Cardinals- 11 time World Champions!
I look forward to seeing how TOC ends...
It will be interesting…. :)

Viva el TOC
can’t wait to see the result.
