Cards sign Trever Miller
According to Bernie.

I don't have peripherals, but he was .235/.327/.382 against lefties in 2008, and he's 35.
Not quite a shut down lefty, but depending on the contract, this could be a pretty smart pick up. LOOGY's seem to be in high demand this offseason, and Mo went out and made sure to snag a serviceable one. Again, no contract details yet, but he's certainly going to be cheaper than Affeldt, so the Birds could/should still be in the game for Rhodes/Ohman/Cruz/someone better than Miller.
He is a type B FA though, so the Rays get a pick, which I'm sure they'll use to draft some elite player who will be better than whoever we would have drafted with the pick.
Thoughts?

Just a note
He is a type B FA though, so the Rays get a pick, which I’m sure they’ll use to draft some elite player who will be better than whoever we would have drafted with the pick.
We don’t give the Rays a pick with a type B. They just get a sandwich pick, I believe.

true.
they get something, we don’t give up anything, everyone wins.
Space.
It's a problem we face.
So we never go anywhere.
We just stay in one place.

According to mlbtraderumors.com
Miller isn’t even a Type B free agent, so the Rays don’t get the sandwich pick either.

I think it's a good move.
Taking Rhodes out of the mix because of the money it would take to land him, I think Miller stacks up right along side of all the other left handers.

How much is Rhodes gonna cost?
He played for $1mil last year (I believe) and only pitched 33+ innings. Considering that Ohman, Shouse and Beimel are all still available and probably more desireable I don’t see Rhodes getting much. I bet he signs for 1/$2mil or at the most 2/$5.

So this gives us...
a bunch of Loogys to sift through in spring training. Right now, I believe we have:
Manning
Miller
Ostlund
TJ
Flores
anyone I’m forgetting?

Mulder
He’s coming back as a LOOGY. A submariner!

If he is a submariner he is a righty
from what i have read in another thread here he pitches softball right handed….

That might
have been a strategy for preventing injury to his delicate left shoulder.

The entire bullpen was overworked because we had two starters averaging under 6 IP/start
and Looper was barely over that mark. Without doing the math, I would assume this is the fewest innings out of the rotation that we’ve had in a very long time, especially when you factor in the injuries to Wainwright and Wellemeyer putting even more strain on the bullpen as those innings had to be filled by spot starts and Boggs and Parisi.

IP as a starter is available from BP
under “team”, then “pitching splits”. 2008 had the most innings pitched from the STL rotation since 2005, with 66 more IP by starter than in 2007.

Makes me wonder
That makes me wonder how many 5 IP starts we had this year. I know we didn’t have enough that went 7 but did we have a lot fewer 1-3IP starts and more 5IP starts then 07? Less Wells/Reyes blow ups in the first inning and more consistently Meh type outings from Pineiro/Boggs? I have to say I would rather have a Pineiro that gives me consistently 5-6IP 3-4ER then have a Wells moodswing of great possible outings or horribly bad bad outings. I always let myself think “this is the time Kip is going to go 7IP 0ER” and then it would be the 2nd inning with 4 ER already. At least with JP I expect 4ER and 6IP.

Surprising, and I'm sure that is the explanation
I still stand by my belief that the best way to build a bullpen is to start with five starters that can give you as close as possible to 200 innings each.

5 IP or less
There were 50 starts of 5 IP or less. Only two (Mulder and Parisi) went less than 3 IP, with 7 games of the starter not making it through 4 IP.

This is fine if we are going
to load up and address one of the glaring team needs with a big splash such as splurging on Rafael Furcal or the Big Unit.

Terms of the Contract?
Anyone want to guess how much we’re paying this guy???
I say it’s 2 years for 4MM total.
1.75MM in ’09, 2.25MM in ’10

I think miller...
will be in the pen for sure. I don’t think he will be one a bunch of loogy’s we sift though. He will be there

I Like the Call
Miller fills one of the team’s current weaknesses, and should come at a reasonable cost. I’m particularly encouraged by his success with two outs and runners in scoring position (Bernie Miklasz notes that they were 0 for 18).
I’m guessing the Cards look for one more specialist, but this move addresses one of the team’s top concerns (without breaking the bank).
Finally, two questions: does this move suggest the Cardinals are NOT going after Fuentes, and does it suggest increased confidence in Chris Perez?
by JWO on Nov 20, 2008 3:49 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
They weren't gonna go after Fuentes either way
But they still might look around for a closer. I really hope if we don’t sign Hoff then we just let YP close instead of Franklin or resigning Izzy.

Put the brakes on!!!
Now Goold is saying there has been a snag. Not sure if the physical didn’t pass or what. But apparently Mo is talking to several lefthanders still.

the snarky jerk in me wants to say
Paletta cleared him, and Mo took that as a clear danger sign.

Trever Miller - on the personal side
he’s a good guy……..KY native….graduate of Trinity High in Louisville…….POY in KY as pitcher/outfielder…….married with 3 kids………one with a rare genetic heart disorder….perhaps the new Russ Springer in that regard

Jocketty's hand at work
MLBtraderumors has the Reds interested in Miller. No doubt Jocketty is trying to mess up this deal in his attempts at extracting his revenge.
