Ian Ostlund
Taken from the Cardinals' mlb.com page:
"The Cardinals also signed left-handed reliever Ian Ostlund to a Minor League contract and invited him to Major League Spring Training. He was a free agent from the Detroit Tigers' organization.
Ostlund was 3-0 with a 2.45 ERA last summer for Triple-A Toledo. He had 77 strikeouts and just 17 walks in 69 2/3 innings. In 299 career Minor League games, he has a 28-21 record, 26 saves and a 3.15 ERA."
Anyone else have a good feeling about this? Maybe he'll be our new Russ Springer? Thoughts? Anyone have info on this guy?

no, he's a lefty,
so they think that he will be able to be a LOOGY next year, probably

His numbers look pretty decent for his career...
so it makes you wonder why he’s spent 8 years in the minors without ever making it to the big leagues…especially as a lefty.

Agreed
I don’t know why he hasn’t been in the majors. Looking at his stats it seems like he may have been injured a couple of times but otherwise his numbers look pretty good, especially since he could be a LOOGY. I definitely like this signing.

Sheesh
about a 4-1 career K-BB ratio in the minors. I wonder what we don’t know about this guy.

Pray he isn't a mirror image of
………..Mike Maroth……gasp!!!!!
For some reason, I don't enjoy watching Big Mac hit #62, but I fondly remember Ray Lankford blasting the ball out of the park in the same game. He had one sweet swing!!

He did have one good game
but guess what, the pen blew up in that one too.
Ryan also hit that lovely home run as well.

It doesn’t want to link correctly, but it is there. It might just take a few times to get it right. I ended up getting them by typing in his last name only.

Wow it seems he has reverse splits

Um, the FIP split is not reverse,
looks like the babip is screwing up the BA/OBP.

How is the FIP calculated is it like the only stat that counts?
I was just saying that LH had a higher Batting average, Batting Average Balls in Play, Lower WHIP against righties, more ground balls and less line drives.

FIP is defense indifferent version of ERA
it takes only the things that a defense has no say into account to generate what the ERA should be.
http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/statpages/glossary/#fip
The formula is (HR*13+(BB+HBP-IBB)*3-K*2)/IP, plus a league-specific factor (usually around 3.2) to round out the number to an equivalent ERA number.

I checked his stats on Fangraphs
He has a great k-bb ration, but he allows about as many hits as innings pitched. He really isn’t a LOOGY type pitcher because he averages well over and inning per appearance, but he could be a good setup man from the left side. Also his BABIP was really high in 3 of the 4 years that he has pitched, so he should be able to lower the hit totals.

Just because he has done something in the minors
doesn’t mean he has to do the same thing in the majors. We move pitchers around considerably. However, TLR has a habit of using LOOGYs against RH batters too so it’s probably a moot point. (moot sp?)

it seems that Mo is trying to at least
address one of the bullpen lefties through a cheap signing. after manning and now ostlund it seems to me that we will only see one major league lefty from FA. let’s hope that this means Mo is gearing up to sign a better FA at one of our other needs.

I'm embarassed
I’m so sorry guys I read left as right for some reason. I wouldn’t have said Russ Springer if I knew Ostlund was a lefty.. But know what, it’s even better that he’s a lefty, I just hope TLR gives him a shot!

45% flyball rate
That right there makes me think “DUNCAN PROJECT!”
Not sure how he will work out but this guy screams out as someone that needs to work on getting more ball on the ground.

well at least it looks...
like Mo is trying to build some depth incase the “real” lefties we get dont work out for whatever reason.

I like it
None of our lefties in the AFL stood out so the club finds someone with a serviceable profile to provide depth in AAA from the left side. We’ve had success in the past with late blooming players nagged by injury. He’s not going to block another prospect in our organization at AAA so it’s a complete no risk situation.

Another vote for like it.
So far, MO hasn’t blown us away with any blockbusters, but the moves he has made have been extremely well-targeted and skillfully executed. He’s picked up three lefties, two of them essentially for free, one for cheap, and all of them with the potential to fill our left-handed gap in he pen (miller and ostlund much more than manning). So far I’m impressed with the digging he’s done.

I agree
Build a solid foundation first, so that when the time comes, you can make that signature move to put you in WS contention. You always hear people talk about making a move to put the team over the top. Well, first you have to be near the top. Which for us means filling our GLARING weaknesses. MO took the first steps toward doing that with these moves, in a financially prudent way. I like it.

Reminds Me of "Major League"
Where the manager says, “This guy hits a ton. How come we haven’t heard of this guy?”
And then our question is answered, when Pedro Cerrano strikes out on every curve-ball. ;-)

The raging question here is:
Is this a 2010 player signed to team up w/ T. Johnson and give us a league minimum LH reliever corps in 2010, or is this guy a 2009 player who, with Miller, is all we’re getting on the LH reliever dept, so forget about your happy dreams of Ohman et al. suiting up in three months?
If it’s the latter, we better be seeing some REALLY good middle infielders coming our way.
Good signing standing on its own, but I wonder what it says about the front office’s intentions.

Either way,
I doubt you can argue against signing a guy with this much potential for so little money, freeing up that money for use on other trades/signings.
I’m with you though. I’m ready to see what happens to the rest of the money.
