pujols
this is just a bit about the way i feel about albert, but i think most dont give credit where it is due
derrick goold linked to a column by jonah keri detailing how people take albert for granted, and he also felt this was the same thing that happened with musial, they are so consistent that when they do extraordinary things they become ordinary
this totally expresses the way i feel about both, i feel musial always has received less recognition than he deserved, and i am seeing the same thing happen with pujols
i do feel it is their metronomic excellence that plagues them both
their is a movie that reminds me of pujols, and though i am sure this movie may remind many of pujols, it is only a certain part that always makes me think of albert. the movie is the natural (big surprise there huh!), but the scene in question may not be as simple to think of. it isnt him knocking the cover off the ball, or hitting the game winner, but instead is in the locker room.
Standing at the sink are manager pop fisher and his coach, with pop saying he wanted to win the pennant more than anything in his life, and if he had he would have been a farmer
you then see roy hobbs, and he talks about how great life on a farm is, pop looks at roy and said his mother thought he should be a farmer, roy says his father wanted him to be a ballplayer
pop says, "Well, you are better than any player I ever had," then pauses, and says, "and you're the best goddamn hitter I ever saw. Suit up."(and this part always makes me think of pujols, and maybe to a bit less extense musial)
if their has ever been a player more close to that scene than pujols, i havent seen him (granted, i never saw cobb, hornsby, ruth, gehrig, williams, musial, mays, aaron, mantle, robinson, banks or mccovey) but having seen schmidt, ripken, griffey jr, bonds, arod, ichiro, and gwynn, only pujols fills that for me
some of you may be older and feel aaron was the guy, or williams, or dimaggio, or if even older maybe josh gibson, but i will take albert over all others

Albert under appreciated
I believe that Albert Pujols is the best drug free baseball player of our generation. He hit .357 with 37 HR’s and struck out just 54 times last year, simply amazing. His track record over the last 8 years, speaks for itself. Congradulations to the 2 time MVP, I think he should have 3 by now. Still, I’m wondering if the national media truely appreciates what a terrific player he is. I’m surprised the voting was as close as it was. And who was the lunkerhead sportswriter who voted him 7th. YES 7th!
Anyway, I remember a game in 2003. I went to a Padres/Cards game with 3 friends on Fuji Film camara day. A friend of mine brought his 7 year old son, J.J. down on the field for a chance to meet a player or two. Of course the 4 of us were stuck in the back several feet from the players and coaches and behind fans 8 to 10 deep. My girlfriend, at the time, took the child, got on their hands and knees and crawled though the crowd to the front, near the retaining rope. Guess who came strolling by a bit later? Yep, Albert Pujols himself. The child lept under the rope to slapped hands Albert. Albert politely dropped to one knee pulled the child up on his knee. Both were smiling like heros as my girlfriend was snapping pictures. Later Albert hit the game winning homer into the left field bullpen,( I think it was in the 11th inning) for a walk off homer.
The point is, I don’t think to this day, little J.J. fully understands how lucky he was to meet Albert. (Who was great with the kids that day) I don’t think we as fans truely appreciate what a great player Albert Pujols is. Folks, he makes 16 mil per year in St.louis and if he were playing in NY he’d be making about 40 mil. Yes, I’m saying it, underpaid and under appeciated. But Albert is tops and my book. And I’m already looking forward to his acceptance when he joins the hall of fame.
