A plea for sanity
Can we please give the Chris Duncan trade suggestions a rest? Literally every thread regarding personnel has at least half a dozen comments speculating as to what he could get us from the Rockies, Marlins, etc. or regarding how much SF needs a LH hitting 1B or how we can do without whatever other player because, hey, we always have Chris Duncan.
Chris Duncan has a herniated cervical disc. This is an extremely serious injury and it will be at least several months before anyone knows if he will have a shot at ever playing baseball again. Generally the treatment for C-disc herniations is not surgical, indicating that his injury is more serious than usual and probably occurred because of trauma. Generally the surgery performed to decompress the nerve involves complete disc removal, and it often involves fusion of vertebrae which causes permanent loss of range of motion. Surgery that does not fuse vertebrae is riskier and more difficult because it requires manipulation of the spinal cord itself.
These obvious problems with the trade aside, Chris Duncan has scarcely proven anything at the major league level and no one has any idea how Dave Duncan would react to this trade idea. No one in the front office has ever brought up Chris's name as someone who was even a possible trade chip.
Please stop suggesting we trade Chris Duncan. Please stop speculating as to his value.

well, one speculation I think is safe to make
Duncan has much, much more potential value in performance to the cardinals going forward than he does in trade value. He could be totally worthless- at this point he’ll have to prove himself in spring training/MiLB, even to me- but he could bounce back; we just don’t know enough to speculate. Though I would certainly trade him straight up for Lincecum or Cain.
Anyway, you’re right, it’s safe to say that trade proposals including him don’t make sense. He’ll either be playing for the cards next year or he’ll be looking for a real job.
the enemy's gate is down.

yes!
Dunc for Lincecum! Genius! Still, straight up, it seems like the Giants would be getting the better end of the deal on that one.

I would most certainly agree!!
For some reason, I don't enjoy watching Big Mac hit #62, but I fondly remember Ray Lankford blasting the ball out of the park in the same game. He had one sweet swing!!

yeah, the Dunc trade comments are getting annoying, but...
how do you know his name has never been brought up by anyone in the front office? Unless you are a fly on the wall, I doubt we will know whether or not his name has ever been seriously used in trade situations.
Also, what do you mean nobody has any idea how Dave Duncan will react? I’m sorry, but I just don’t see D.Dunc going ape s**t over the fact that his son was traded. Baseball is a business, and he has been around long enough to understand this.

If him going nuts were the case, then...
Shelley Duncan could probably have been gotten for A. Reyes years ago.

Great idea: C. Duncan for S. Duncan?
Wow, that would make Dave’s head hurt.

If Duncan's injury...
is that bad, then I think he needs to sit down and spend some serious father-son time and start learning the Dave Duncan Guide to be a pitching coach. When TLR and Duncan finally decide to hang it up (I’m almost 100% sure it will happen at the same time), we will need a new pitching coach. Start teaching Chris the ways of the old man. He and Oquendo could be the new Duncan and TLR. Just a wild thought.
Brings up another thought? If TLR and Duncan are done after ’09, who should be the manager and pitching coach in ’10? Should it be Oquendo? Could it be Mike Matheny? Maybe Matheny becomes the new former catcher turned pitching coach?

Duncan's surgery
was to remove the disc and replace it with a plastic one. The first of it’s kind to be performed on an athlete. This procedure carries a lot of risk for a normal person, so no one knows what it will do to an athlete.
Dave Duncan was quoted as saying that he lobied to get Chris traded before he was brought up because he didn’t want the allegations of nepotism brought up iwhen Chris was brought up.

Whoa now
am I to believe that all of these Duncan trade scenarios were serious?
I need to start paying more attention, I thought that 99 % of them were in jest.

I promise
…that next time I propose an Anderson/Boggs/Mather/Motte/Ryan/Duncan trade for an ace or a cleanup hitter, I’ll totally leave Dunc out of it.
After reading this post, I feel like I could preform the surgery- could you include charts and x-rays next time? Are you an MD, or a guy with a bad back?
