October 5, 2008 playoff games open thread

Dammit. My local paper -- the Houston Comical -- is so shitty. It had hidden the start time of today's Phils-Brewers game so I'm an hour or so behind schedule. Here's the thread. We could finish off each series today.

BTW, have I mentioned recently

that Lohse’s #1 comp at age 28 was Jeff Suppan? Lohse’ll be 30 in December. His contract runs from his age-30 season through 33. I know some believe Lohse will get better in those years than he was this year but Suppan didn’t. Actually, he was better in his age-30 season, but worse in the next 3. This year he’s been terrible. If Lohse pitches like Suppan and there’s only 1 terrible season from Lohse, the contract may be worth it but I fear what we’re seeing from Suppan today is what we’ll see from Lohse in the playoffs in a couple of years.

by chuckb on Oct 5, 2008 2:20 PM EDT   0 recs

Lohse v. Suppan 3 years ago

Yikes. Pretty damn close on both K% and looking at 2008 Lohse and 2005 Suppan. At least it looks like Lohse’s BB/9 is moving in the right direction.

K and BB Rates:
Lohse 2008 K: 14.18
Lohse 2008 BB: 5.84

Suppan 2005 K: 13.67
Suppan 2005 BB: 7.55

Suppan’s BB% started moving upwards after 2005, so the comp, unfortunately, could be right on. Let’s just hope that by the end of the contract, Lohse is the #5 guy and doesn’t need to start a playoff game 4.

I think it's just a good measure of the club's faith in Carp's health that they think they need Lohse.

I assume Carp is done.

by hazel on Oct 5, 2008 3:40 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

yes I agree

the Carp injury changed the equation quite a bit.

by chuckb on Oct 5, 2008 5:38 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

A difference

is that Lohse has generally been viewed as underperforming prior to this year, while Suppan was thought, rightly or wrongly, to be getting pretty much all he could out of his limited talents. I don’t have a strong feeling about that, but if it’s true, then we might be better off with the guy we kept than with the one we didn’t.

by StanTheManFan on Oct 5, 2008 3:57 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

It's true that,

even years ago suppan never had the velocity or the swinging strike% that Lohse has now. Stuff wise they do not compare very well. Results wise they may, but although I hated this contract at first, I feel myself warming on it.

Rays-Sox weather report

It’s raining in the Western suburbs right now. Game might be delayed a bit, but they should be able to play it.

Yes

For the most part, the suburbs (except for the South Suburbs) are Cubs territory.

The Cardinals territory ought to extend well into Arkansas

and all the way into southern Mississippi. Nebraska and Louisiana, too. Wherever KMOX reached and there wasn’t another franchise, was and still is to some degree, the Cardinal base.

Still in MS?

They haven’t switched to the Braves there?

MS is Braves country

I grew up there. In fact, I think the Braves are pretty much the team of the whole state, not only half of it as the map shows. And that Map DOES who the Cards fans as having all of Arkansas.

I certainly wasn’t expecting them to get completely blown out by a middling-good LA team. I figured they’ve got too much talent for that, even for the Cubs.

It was until this past off season

it was crowned and had horrible drainage. Bossard ripped the entire thing up and rebuilt it with a top of the line drainage system.

And his work goes much further than US Cellular, Wrigley and Fenway……he’s worked for the Royal Saudi Family to build a soccer field. Here’s a great article about him and the reconstruction at Wrigley, just follow the link.

This is similar to what Carp did in the first inning against San Diego in 2006. The Angels are probably going to have a hard time scoring the rest of the game.

by CoolCat23 on Oct 5, 2008 8:01 PM EDT   0 recs

What a clusterfuck!

how important is defense? That misplay may be the end of the season for the San Bernadino Angels.

by chuckb on Oct 5, 2008 8:33 PM EDT   0 recs

What the hell does Howie Kendrick have to do

to get his ass sent to the bench? What an awful, awful baseball player.

by Hardcore Legend on Oct 5, 2008 8:34 PM EDT   0 recs

In all fairness, that should have been Hunter's ball

why he quit on it, I have no idea. But, I will say that Kendrick should go for that ball until he’s called off, which it sorta looked like he was called off, but I don’t think he was. I think he wanted Hunter to take it and Hunter gave up on it.

Kendrick screwed up, but Hunter screwed up more since that’s his ball to catch and he quit assuming Kendrick would make the catch which would have been a difficult catch to make in the first place.

Lot’s of screwing up on that play.

Kendrick screwed up more

he quit on the ball without being told to. You go for the ball until told ‘I got it’.

Plus, he’s a fucking waste of carbon at the plate.

Thank the GOBs for Mike Napoli. Should be 3-0.

by Hardcore Legend on Oct 5, 2008 8:47 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

by Hardcore Legend on Oct 5, 2008 8:48 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

by Hardcore Legend on Oct 5, 2008 8:55 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Important now, just like our games were

neccessity, I’ll agree with.

(if alert) If we would have had a better alternative to PH (bench misuse granted), instead of using AK 6-4-3, we might’ve won a few more games, and maybe, just maybe we would be playin OCT baseball.

I'm not arguing who's the better player or that Kendrick hasn't performed horribly

Because he absolutely has. But that is Hunter’s ball. Yes, Kendrick is supposed to keep going until called off which he wasn’t, but it’s still Hunter’s ball and he took the play off. The way I see it, Hunter is more to blame because it was actually his ball to catch. Kendrick’s supposed to go in case Hunter can’t get to it, but Hunter could have gotten to it but he just quit.

i wish people would mention

that pujols had 8 HR in SEP when Howard’s “11 HR in Sep” is brought up. 3 more HR in a month does not an MVP make. That, and the difference between Howard’s OPS for SEP and albert’s is half of the difference between albert and howard for the year. Seriously, a 190 OPS+ vs a 123 OPS+.

Also, Howard’s .793 OPS against the mets should be discussed. He could have done a lot more to make the Mets collapse happen a lot earlier. Howard had 12 HR in 35 games against ATL and WSN this year, which is great, but if albert played in PHI park and played those teams that many times he’d have probably 60 HR.

the enemy's gate is down.
