Your entrance AB music
So this may nto be fanpost worthy but as I was sitting eating my 3 appetizers for $11 at Applebees and Shake it up came on I thought about this subject some more. whenever I'm at a game I always wonder what would I come up to AB with, or run in from the pen?
This has been talked about some during threads over the yrs since I been coming to VEB, but I thought it was a good off season(kinda) topic.
I already mentioned shake it up by the Cars for a Reliever. Maybe not his entrance but something the stadium plays. As for AB I might go with something silly Liek the BGs or maybe Jump around to get the crowd into it by HOP.
So two things what would you run in from the pen to, and Which players music during his AB did you like the most?
I have two. Welcome to the Jungle for Big Mac, and Crazy Train when Walker hit. I have to say though When Big mac batted and Axel warmed up of the system it was such a great feeling in the air.

my picks
My favorite song that a player uses is “Funky Monkey” by Ludwick, just because it’s so bizarre that of all the songs out there, that’s what he chose (or at least was using for a short time when I went to my one and only game of this year this year).
What would I run in from the pen to? Bulls on Parade by Rage Against the Machine is a good song to get one pumped up. I’d probably go with that.

Can't say I have a favorite of anyone's
but my walkup music for an at bat (sorry, never was a pitcher, so I can’t envision myself coming in from the ’pen) would be the intro music from U Can Do It by Ice Cube.
Here’s the YouTube of the video. After his dad talks (11 second mark) til the end of the intro (30 second mark). It’d have to cut off RIGHT THEN though for obvious reasons. But, I think it kicks it.
I’ve also been keen to the intro to Sheep Go To Heaven by Cake. Like the first 15 seconds or so. Might use this to mix it up every once in a while.

All Along the Watchtower, the Hendrix version...
…and I mean that for both. Great rock song, the greatest intro riff ever. I used it when I played…a very long time ago indeed. I believe Ankiel uses it now, and Teixeira used to when he was a Ranger…
Other good ones include Peace of Mind (Boston…walk up), Welcome to the Jungle (G&R, pitching), and Voodoo Child (also by Hendrix, works better for a pitcher song)

Oil Country
I know this isn’t baseball, but I absolutely have to post this.
The Edmonton Oilers have the BEST game intro ever. Period. The video is a little long (just under 10 minutes), but it’s absolutely worth watching. A couple of things to look out for since the video suffers a bit due to the lighting in the stadium at times. First, pay no attention to Don Cherry’s suit. You’re seeing it correctly, but there’s nothing you can do about it. Second, notice how the Oilers enter the rink. The rink and their locker room are separated by the concourse, so they have to actually walk through the crowd in the concourse to get to the rink. Third, watch the ENTIRE video. Especially the anthems. Amazing. Fourth, that guy behind the Oilers bench belting out O’ Canada does that EVERY game. He’s in every video of their anthem I’ve ever seen. Fifth, notice how the crowd reacts to the Star Spangled Banner. Sixth, notice how the crowd cheers every time the word “Free” is sung in O’ Canada.
Honestly, I have no idea, how you could come in to that building as a visiting team player and not play the first 10 minutes without a load in your pants.
Here’s how they do it in Oil Country.

gotta be metal
I’ve always thought the intro’s to these songs would be great AB music:
sirenia – meridian
savatage – strange wings
megadeth – hangar 18
iron maiden – wasted years
If i was a closer, it would have to be Solitude Aeturnus, concern. Such a perfect “lull them to sleep and then cut their throats” song. ESP at the 5 min+ point.

I love this topic
I tried a diary on it a couple of years back, but it was roundly ignored. Probably, like much of my material, just too damned long.
For an AB, my favourite is probably Welcome… by GnR. Just really almost an ideal choice. If given the choice, though, I would consider using the old theme from Batman. Get it? Batman? Anyone? Is this thing on?
For a reliever, I’ve always been of the notion that a great relief intro should be a song that begins with a soft intro, building ever so slightly, and then followed by a huge crash. This sort of arrangement is most often found in metal songs, epitomized by Metallica’s “Enter Sandman”, that Mariano Rivera uses. A nice wide dynamic shift is always welcome.
I’ve always thought “Voodoo Child” by Hendrix would be an excellent one. It contains the elements I was just discussing, and I think it would be great for a guy who’s known as a bit of a kook, someone like Tyler Johnson, ideally. I believe that Chris Perez also used the Prodigy’s “Firestarter”, in Memphis this year, and I love that choice.
I’ve also thought that either Phil Collins’ “In the Air Tonight”, or the Doors’ “The End”, would make good closer intros. They don’t have quite the pump up factor of some of these other songs, but both have a sinister, intimidating quality that I think would be well served as a tone setter for the opposing team.
Victory is sweet, even deep in the cheap seats.

For me.....
It’d be something rap. That is what get’s me fired up, and what I used to listen to back in my playing days. Coming up with a specific song though, I’m not sure, just be something to get me fired up. Something by Jay-Z maybe?
I just thought of this, but Jump Around by House of Pain would be a good closer song.

I was at a Mariners game in 2007
and JJ Putz came out to close the game to AC/DC’s Thunderstruck. The stadium was electric; it was awesome. Remember thier 8-game win streak? That was the 8th game… Anyway some of my picks would be:
Battle of One – 30 Seconds to Mars
Six – All That Remains (Not sure many would appreciate this one…)
Wipe Me Down – Fox
Riot – Three Days Grace
Guarded – Disturbed
Same Old Song and Dance – Aerosmith
Piñata - something children beat relentlessly with bats. Piñeiro - .858 OPS against. Some call it irony; I call it destiny.

I know most people probably have no idea
but Thunderstruck is like the White Sox theme song every year. That’s the team intro song when they run out on the field. Also, every bar with a Sox slant pretty much plays it on a loop.

Smoltz
John Smoltz used it when he was a closer. Awesome entrance. He would walk from the pen door about half way though the OF, then begin to jog the rest of the way. Walking during the slower begining of “thunder” “thunder” “thunder” . he would get his pitches in and as the batter stepped in the box the last line they played was “I was shakin’ at the knees”. classic closer entrance.

here's my problem
when i think “geek” i think sci-fi, videogames, music/movie obsessions, etc. but when i think “nerd” i think a lot of the same stuff, along with math and science. there’s plenty of overlap but i’ve always thought of them as somewhat different. so i consider barton a definite nerd. but i have no idea how geeky he is (i suspect he probably is a geek as well).
by mattybobo on Oct 8, 2008 9:35 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
My definition:
Nerds and geeks almost always like the same stuff. Nerds just participate in that stuff a little harder and a little more often. For example, nerds and geeks both like Star Wars and make Star Wars references. Only nerds go to the conventions (where they subsequently get made fun of by Triumph the Insult Comic Dog). Further, geeks have an easier time with the ladies as non-geek women will date geeks. Nerds have to find nerd women, which is harder to do.
Brian Barton, no matter whether he is nerd or geek, is also a jock. He’s a rare hybrid. And something tells me he doesn’t have any problems with the ladies. He likes Sam Cooke, for crying out loud! The man is probably a stud.
by spants on Oct 8, 2008 1:50 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
hm. +1. i think you've actually done a better job of saying what i thought i was saying.
especially since i’ve always known i was a geek, but would never (OK, maybe not never) go to a convention. and now that i think even more, nerddom isn’t restricted to math or science; one can be academically be a nerd about anything, be it history, philosophy, physics, chemistry, whatever. i think arguing that thucydides mops with floor with herodotus and professing serious problems with empirical positivism are pretty darn nerdy (this demonstrating that i might actually be more nerdy than i thought…)
anyway. barton is clearly the jock/nerd hybrid that represents the pinnacle of human breeding. he is clearly a eugenic science experiment gone terribly awesome.

Tangentially related, in the Simpsons episode where Homer becomes a pro boxer, his intro song when he fights the Mike Tyson parody character is “Why Can’t We Be Friends?”. I thought that was pretty damn funny.

Ride of the Valkyries, Wagner

the prog metal band "mastermind", with the berends brothers, did an incredible cover
of “the ride of the valkries” in the mid-90’s… sadly, it seems to be no longer available. I have the cd, bought at a show in denver in like ‘96, but it’s too much trouble to upload to youtube- but if you ever become a closer, or if you love great guitar rock with questionable vocals (vocals were actually quite good, till the older berends guy’s voice went south), google “mastermind valkyrie” and you should be able to find an mp3 of it, for cheap…

A few thoughts...
I have no idea how many Cardinal games I’ve sat sat through and had lengthy conversations on this matter. Almost as many as what name I’d get on the back of a jersey, should I ever get one (20 years later, still undecided). But anyway, my intro ballad always hinged on what caliber of player I would be: everyday starter, something a little more audacious; fill-in or utility, then a little more subtle. So here we go.
At Bat: When the Levee Breaks, Led Zepplin
Relief pitching: Lit Up, Buckcherry
Just tunes that get me pumped up, nothing with any play on words for baseball.
Overall, though, I would love to have Come and See the Show by Emerson lake and Palmer blaring throughout the stadium.
And one more thing: can the players actually hear the songs played down on the field? I’ve always wondered how much stadium noise really makes it down to them.

it depends
the answer to that can be cliche.. I havce heard players who go to a stadium fo r abig game and are visiting say the crowd doesnt. at the same time some say we know that it will be a tough game and their fans will be into it.. SOmetimes this gets as cliche as the play hard one day at a time etc etc

The Weapon
Great walk in music for a closer. Plus you get a sweet nickname along with it.

I remebered this the other day
When a Ranger hits a hr at the ball park in arlington(whatever its called now) they used to play the theme from the natural… it was pretty sweet. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qj2pXikeDRg

if i was a closer
and you walked up to the plate with that music, my first pitch would be in your ear.
one of the greatest movie sound tracks ever, though. Ankiel should definitely use it.

reliever:
“Copperhead Road” by Steve Earle – its got an ominous buildup and rocks pretty good at the end.
hitter:
“Brown Sugar” – Rolling Stones – best guitar intro ever.
I’ve often wondered why there aren’t more indie rock fans among MLB players.
Lots of good choices there:
“Assessment” by Beta Band
“Untitled” by Interpol
“Love Will Tear Us Apart” by Joy Division

music
If I were a closer, which with my 82mph fastball, I think I could get it done.
anyway, If I were a closer, I would come up to “Bullet with a Name” by Nonpoint. Non-stop aggression start to finish.
Walk up music would probably be somethin from Ride the Lightning.
C'mon you Redbirds, lets prove em' wrong, again!
