October 3, 2008 Playoff Games Open Thread
Don't have much time to write today before the games but I'll chime in later. Go Rays. I'm pulling for the Sox but no one else is. Really love this playoff stuff. The only good thing about the Cards not being in it is I can enjoy it w/o the stress and often the aggravation.

Wouldn't surprise me if he did
but it doesn’t really matter. Any manager worth a damn is gonna convince his team they did it on purpose. And, believe me. Ozzie thinks they did it on purpose. So does A.J. and the rest of ’em.

I wouldn't doubt if it was on purpose
judging by all of the scuffles the Rays have gotten in this year (Yanks in ST, BoSox) these guys aren’t backing down from anyone and they want everyone to know.

Message to Luhnow and Mozeliak
I was bored so I thought I would delve into one of my favorite subjects: where do the best pitchers come from? In spite of the Cardinals tendency toward drafting college pitchers, I think it is pretty clear that the best pitchers (in the US at least) are drafted and signed as High Schoolers.
I did a quick check of the five-man rotations and the closers of the eight playoff teams and I found that only 10 out of 40 starting pitchers and three out of 9 (counted both Saito and Broxton from LA) were from four year colleges. Most of the rest were high schoolers with some amateur free agents form abroad. FWIW, one of the ten college pitchers was Tim Wakefield and I am pretty sure he was drafted as a position player.
The other college starting pitchers were: Jamie Moyer, Joe Blanton, Dave Bush, Ben Sheets, Andy Sonnenstine, Matt Garza, Jered Weaver, Joe Saunders, and John Lackey.
So, Jeff and John, if you are reading this, quit drafting all those damn college pitchers and take a few chances on HS guys in the early rounds. Notable HS pitchers in the playoffs inlcude: C.C. Sabathia, Scott Kazmir, John Lester, Josh Beckett, Derek Lowe, Chad Billingsley, Clayton Kershaw, Ted Lilly, Rayan Dempster, Rich Harden, and Cole Hamels.
College pitchers are more likely to reach the big leagues and more likely to be middle relievers. Guess what our system has a surplus of: guys who project to be middle relievers and were drafted from college.
Those Pilgrims ain't lookin' so proud now...

Breaking news from MLB.com:
Bud Selig will attend the baseball game when the Brewers play the Phillies in Milwaukee, according to MLB News.
Is this some kind of joke?
by Red in Chicago on Oct 3, 2008 6:49 PM EDT 0 recs
Well he was the Brewer's owner
and he is the current commisioner so I don’t see why they wouldn’t report it. Other than the playoff games which are taking place as we speak, there probably isn’t much else for them to discuss. I’m sure they’re too burned out from the MVP talk that was going on the last three weeks to return to that subject. (I know I am…)

Everytime I see the two extra umpires on the field
in the playoffs, the more angry I get about instant replay.
Why not just put the two extra umps on the field? They don’t even have to be exceptional umpires. They can be permanant line judges. It isn’t that hard of a job.

not related to your argument
I’m picturing the fans engaging in a new game: bean the ump. They’d be pretty close to the action, wouldn’t they?

it's true if the Cubs players think about it
you’d have to think it’s been in the papers a lot since they clinched. I wonder if it doesn’t start to get into the players’ heads. It can’t be the reason DeRosa bobbles a ball or Soto throws one away, but I wonder if a few of them don’t start to think, “maybe there is a curse!” whenever these weird things start to happen.

I think, for the most part, the players don't concern themselves with it.
That is, until about right now. I’ve always said the curse is real simply because so many people believe in it. One of my best friends is a cubs season ticket holder (would have come in nice had the Cards won the wild card and played the cubs in the NLDS…..but I digress) and he was at the last two games. Now I have to say, he is a huge cynic, so he gets his hopes up but is never surprised when things hit the fan.
Anyway, we were talking today about the difference between cub fans and White Sox fans and how they are pretty much the same with a different outlook. If you look at the two teams right before the playoffs started, you see two different mindsets. With the Sox, they’re confident as hell, but will jump ship at the first sign of trouble. It’s like “win, or F you!”. With the cub fans it’s a little different. They’re for the most part excited in a “trying to fool themselves” kind of way. They expect something to go wrong. While Sox fans seem offended and surprised by it…..cub fans know its coming and get nervous even before there’s a sign of trouble.
And that’s what happens in that ballpark. I said it last night. That park is a giant, clinched sphincter and all of that angst is felt by the players. If you don’t think energy (positive or negative) in your home stadium that’s packed to the gills doesn’t have an effect on you then you’re crazy. Then when one thing goes wrong, it starts to pile up the angst until it actually affects the play on the field.
Can you imagine being a cub and dealing with the ups and downs of that stadium? It would take it’s toll on you. Cliff Floyd (who’s from Gary, IN) said they’re the toughest home fans he’s ever played in front of. And he played in New York.
So, in a long winded response to your question HC, yeah it does get into their head. They get distracted because that place is a pressure cooker. And getting as far away from Wrigley is the absolute best thing for the cubs right now. Unfortunately, the Dodgers have scouted them PERFECTLY. They’re going to continue to work counts and drive up Harden’s pitch count tomorrow night and will probably get him out of the game no later than the 6th inning. Plus, Kuroda’s been a much better pitcher at home and he’s going to be following the same game plan Lowe and Billingsley followed the last two games. Plus, Lou decided he wanted to make his outfield worse by benching Fukudome in a much bigger outfield compared to Wrigley.
I think the cubs will play better, but will only go as far as Harden will take them. If he can’t get into the 7th with a 3 or 4 run lead minimum, the cubs are in trouble.

Harden
is dominating. Definitely the guy you’d like to have on the mound in this situation. No one on the Cubs is more capable of throwing a 3 hit shutout than him.
He may only give them 6 innings or so, but they’ve got a good chance of getting to game 4.

He hasn't been dominant in his last 4 starts
Hasn’t past the 6th in any of them, hasn’t been dominant (although he hasn’t gotten killed either) and I believe his velo has been around 92-93. If the Dodgers are able to work him, they’ll have him at 100 pitches in the 5th inning.
But, he’ll be on 9 days rest so he might be feeling better. I know they’ve been concerned about protecting him lately (and they had the luxury) but he’s not exactly a warrior. It’ll definitely be an interesting game to watch.

do not underestimate
the Rays’ pitching. They’re young but they’re really good. Shields, Kazmir, Garza — boy to have 3 good young pitchers like those guys. They’ve got David Price, who may be better than all 3, in the pen. Many have never heard of them but, if it comes down to the Sox and the Rays, the Sox had better hope they’ve got Beckett.

I know
they (the W Sox) have some major OBP issues on offense. But those Rays pitchers are legit. Their top 4 starters all had FIPs at 4.37 or lower in the tougher league. The REd Sox lineup can be really tough w/ their patient hitters, and they might really get a chance to test the Rays bullpen, but they won the toughest division in baseball — by far. They’re no fluke.

They're no fluke
but I think the Red Sox did what they had to do to get to the post season. Plus, they had a lot of issues this year during the season. Lost Papi for a long time, Manny flaked on them, etc.
But this team could care less about winning the division. They’re built to win in the post-season. They’ve got an amazing offense (OBP and Power), speed, defense, starting pitching, middle relief, closer, and they’re extremely smart about every aspect of the game.

I agree completely
the Sox are very good. It’s why I thought they’d beat the Angels. I was just trying to make the point that the Sox weren’t going to steamroll the Rays — if it comes down to those 2. Should be a really good series. Sox’ll probably win if Beckett’s healthy. If he’s not, they’d better look out.
