the case for the dodgers
i'm rooting for the dodgers for four reasons in this postseason:
1. they're playing the cubs
2. they hired joe torre as manager
3. they made a bold trade for an impact player like manny ramirez, and stand a good chance of resigning him (think mcgwire 1997)
4. they have made such moves without sacrificing their very talented young core.
this is a mix of accomplishments i think the cardinals would be well suited to follow (minus the cubs-in-the-first-round stuff, of course). i'm not advocating another "old school" manager once ladunca is gone, but simply a guy that's right for our mix

Torre: Simply A Good Manager
I’m glad to see him have success with the Dodgers after refusing to take a pay cut and stay with the Yankees. I think people forget that the only success the Atlanta Braves had in the 1970’s and 1980’s was with Joe Torre as manager from 1982-1984. The Braves won the NL West in 1982 and only finished three games out in 1983. The Cardinals had three winning seasons from 1991-1993 with less than stellar teams under Torre’s control. The 1994 and 1995 Cardinals were just putrid. Don’t put that on Torre!
Oh, yeah, I hear he had success with the Yankees. Torre is a Hall of Fame manager all the way.

I agree
I really thought there was some interesting backlash when I made the claim that the LA GM had done a better job of constructing a team than Jim Hendry had in Chicago. The Dodgers have plenty of money to throw around and he’s thrown crap at the wall that didn’t stick — Pierre, Jones, Schmidt. But he was also willing to roll the dice to bring in an impact player (Manny) and a solid veteran (Blake) to make a run at a wide-open division. He sacrificed only one top-prospect to get those two guys, LaRoche, and it’s beginning to look like he’s as fragile as they come.
I think that they’ll wrap up the Cubbies in four games after last night and then have their pitching staff set up to throw two groundballers in Philly — where they could steal one or even both games.

Hardy har...
Funny, I set up at least three interviews since the Pop Warner post, and EVERY TIME the guy got called up before the interview came around. Garcia, Mortensen and one other guy… Then I just sort of petered out, figuring we needed to keep SOME of the good players in town :)

with all points. manny has won me over as a dodger, i guess it takes him walloping the cubs for me to hold him affectionately, ha. sometimes i wonder if last year we had an opportunity to tenure torre but that when tony realized he quickly re-upped for his two years. regardless, i suppose we owe him and dunc one more year after finally bringing the series win in 06. here’s to dodgers winning the league in 08, they have my backing too.
