World Series Game Five Thread

This is for all the marbles, Viva El Birostris.

Cole "The Assassin" Hamels (thanks, Jeanne Zelasko) v. Scott Kazmir in a battle of two lefties who strike out a million batters per nine innings. It's a great matchup; let's hope it's a great game, if nothing else.

Doesn't look like they'll have that excuse.

Welke, who has worked six Division Series, six League Championship Series and three World Series, will head up a crew that includes Tim Tschida, Jeff Kellogg, Tom Hallion, Kerwin Danley and Fieldin Culbreth.
All six umpires have plenty of regular-season and postseason experience. Tschida, a regular-season crew chief who just completed his 23rd year of umpiring, will be in right field for Game 1. Tschida has worked two previous World Series, in 1998 and 2002, and has also worked seven Division Series and four League Championship Series.
Kellogg, a 17-year veteran, will be in left field; Hallion, a 16-year veteran, will be at third; while Culbreth and Danley, both of whom have 12 years experience, will be at second and first, respectively.

Game 2, Danley’s first WS.

The umpire Tom Hallion, one of three World Series rookies in the six-man crew, called Crawford safe. Replays showed he was out.

by scoot on Oct 27, 2008 10:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Actually they said it was because of the one with Rollins

And I think it is optional. The point of the call is if it’s an automatic out, it keeps the fielder from dropping it so he can get a double play. With the wind blowing like it is, pop ups on the infield aren’t exactly automatic outs. Just like the Rollins play.

And, fwiw, the rule states that the infielder must be able to make the catch while facing the infield. Has nothing to do with where it is on the field.

There is a rule in MLB

that if you take the lead without the other team getting to bat, the runs are taken off the board. I swear this exists somewhere. It has to do with rain.

by Hardcore Legend on Oct 27, 2008 10:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Changed

that is the rule that was changed in 06 for the 07 season and beyond

If a game is tied or the away team takes the lead in the top of an inning and the home team doesn’t get a full bottom of the inning to take the lead back then you can suspend play of the game until a later date. No runs come off the board, no starting over and no just ending the game will continue

Rule 4.12 SUSPENDED GAMES

4.12
SUSPENDED GAMES.
(a) A game shall become a suspended game that must be completed at a future date if the game is terminated for any of the following reasons:

 (5) Weather, if a regulation game is called while an inning is in progress and before the inning is completed, and the visiting team has scored one or more runs to take the lead, and the home team has not retaken the lead; or
   (6) It is a regulation game that is called with the score tied. National Association Leagues may also adopt the following rules for suspended games. (If adopted by a National Association League, Rule 4.10(e) would not apply to their games.):

Keep in mind, this rule is talking about a “regulation” game. I.e., a game that is official. I’m assuming we all know what an official/regulation game is.

Recorded it earlier and now’s as good as anytime to get it off the ol’ dvr. And I might watch the new Two and A Half Men as well……

Two and a Half Men is on episode 4 or something of this season.

And Chuck Season 2 is better than season 1. I started watching from day one and was skeptical whether or not I liked it but it kept me entertained enough I stuck with it.

Plus it doesn’t help that Sarah is SOOOOOO HOT and actually looks better this season. They were obviously covering up a bit of a complexion issue with her last year, but she got that cleared up.

I don't think so either.

Luckily, they can start late and only have to play 3 or 3 1/2 innings…..or more if it’s still tied.

Technically, yes

That is if you’re assuming they would have called it. Although, they might have made an exception to the rule even though people would have blasted Bud either way on it.

This is one of the best decisions baseball has ever made in regards to a rule change.

Oh, I totally agree.

Losing a world series by one run in the sixth inning would be the WORST!

I'm just talking about in general

I think its a great rule change. It barely affects 1 or 2 games per season, but still a great change.

rain out thoughts

GOB, grant us David Price.

GOB, grant us Brad Lidge, men on base, and a tie game.

Rays have no hotel rooms.

Cleveland is a neutral site, right? No delays ever happen there.

Hmmm. Saint Louis to St Pete = 1030 miles. Saint Louis to Philly = 890 miles. Saint Louis forecast = sunny all week.

I'm sure they can figure out something

it’s not like there’s a shortage of money to throw around. If I was just someone randomly staying in Philly, I’d switch to a hostel if they offered me a credit so that I coudl give my room to Carl Crawford.
