ALCS Game 7 Open Thread

I love game 7s. I hope we get one more before the season fades into history. According to Caleb Pfeiffer at BP, 11 out of the 14 teams who have forced a game 7 after being behind 3-1 in the series have gone on to win Game 7. Advantage Sox. Only 1 road team has lost game 7 -- that great game where Sid Bream made his mad dash to home plate. Does anyone remember who made the throw that almost nailed El Sid at the plate?

It's Lester vs. Garza tonight -- two excellent young pitchers. Most of the country has no idea who these 2 guys are but they are truly two of the best young pitchers in the game. Lester, right now, is one of the top 5 pitchers in the AL. Advantage Sox. I know that 99.9% of us are pulling for the Rays but I'd say the Sox are now the favorites. I hope I'm wrong. Is there any doubt right now that these are the two best teams in baseball? Not in my mind. I hope the Phils can stay w/ this game's winner long enough to drag the season out a couple extra days.

BTW, the Rays better win this game in the first 7 innings. Jonathan Papelbon has NEVER allowed a postseason run.

I'm wanting to say Barry Bonds, but I'm not positive

Also, Chuck you got your wish for a Game 7. I think it’s gonna be a good game. Well, I hope it is. As far as the Phillies, I think they’ll surprise you. As long as they’re hitting, they can beat any team in baseball. It all comes down to their starting pitching. And they’re just as good as Boston at closing the game out in the 9th.

yeah they have stars

but they’ve also got some scrubs in their lineup and I don’t trust their starting pitching. Their relief pitching, though, is better than I thought.

BTW, Bonds is correct.

by chuckb on Oct 19, 2008 8:11 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah...

… Bonds made the throw.

BoSox are starting Crisp and Cora instead of Ellsbury and Lowry. does this surprise anybody else?

by kindred on Oct 19, 2008 8:08 PM EDT reply actions

oh...

… and on Bonds. some maintain that he was positioned way too close to the LF line; he had to run laterally towards center in order to reach the ball before throwing it, and that extra time might’ve been the difference between Bream being safe or out. i once heard a Pirate, not sure who, blame Bonds for that play.

poor Pirates. imagine how the recent history of that team might’ve been different if they’d won that game.

by kindred on Oct 19, 2008 8:11 PM EDT up reply actions

never heard that about Bonds

but, if it’s true, shouldn’t the Pirates’ coaches have repositioned him? Was Bonds so stubborn so as to ignore the coaches on defensive positioning? I guess it’s possible but it’s at least equally likely that, if true, Leyland and Co. deserve the blame.

by chuckb on Oct 19, 2008 8:13 PM EDT up reply actions

i believe...

… that the story was that someone in the dugout motioned him more towards center and he took a token step or two, but didn’t go as far as they wanted.

but it’s been years since i heard this, and i don’t remember where it was or who was saying it. my memory could be off. in any case, the bigger thing was that whoever the Braves’ pitcher was gave up a hit to Francisco freaking Cabrera. at least, i think that’s what his name was.

but one thing i don’t remember: who was pitching for the Buccos?

by kindred on Oct 19, 2008 8:22 PM EDT up reply actions

It was Cabrera

and the pitcher was…Stan Belinda. I knew it was that closer guy who shouldn’t have been a closer. For some reason Steve Bedrosian’s name came to mind but I knew that wasn’t right. I got the initials right.

by chuckb on Oct 19, 2008 8:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Braves scored all 3 runs

in the 9th. Drabek was money and pitched into the 9th and the Braves were helped out by a Jose Lind error. Great game.

by chuckb on Oct 19, 2008 8:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Jose Lind!

i’d completely forgotten about him.

that was a great game. one of my earliest baseball memories was watching that game, actually. at the time i was cheering for the Braves for the sake of my cousins who were big fans. needless to say, i stopped cheering for the Braves after ’96. i was at one of those 15-2 games.

that play

to this day its the main reason i hate barry bonds. if he had made a good throw he would have a ring and would have faded into history, instead he is a despised man. This play is one of my reasons why bobby cox is a choker, he had speed on he bench but left bream in the game with 2 bad knees, i do not understand it.

Does the fact that

they interview managers in the middle of a game 7 tell anybody else something about how important the in-game decision-making by managers is? It certainly doesn’t bolster the argument that managers are extremely important other than filling out a lineup card and making pitching changes.

my take...

… on that has always been that managers don’t usually have much influence on the game, but in certain high-leverage situations the decisions made by the manager can have a big impact. see: Torre’s decision to start Lowe on short rest, then pull him with a low pitch count, then not pinch-hit for Kuo, then pull Kuo after one batter, then send in Broxton for a 5-out save. those decisions all back-fired, and may have cost the Dodgers the entire series.

does anyone else think

they are going a little overboard with the constant pitch count updates?

I mean, 88 pitches is not update-worthy to me.

I have to keep reminding myself

that the centerfield TV shot does not give one an accurate “look” at the strike zone… since the camera’s higher than the field, pitches look lower on TV than they actually are; and since the camera’s off-set from dead center, you don’t get a legit “read” on inside/outside, either…

I like the offset camera better than the one directly behind the pitcher

I find it easier to figure out the left/right strike zone when the camera is low like this than the up/down zone when the camera is higher since it has to be above the pitcher’s head.

When the camera is straight on, everything looks low to me, even balls that are chest high.

And now

John Kruk is showing how biased he is towards the Phillies. He’s claiming they are a better team than the Rays all around. tsk tsk tsk.

The Phillies can win if Rollins and Howard get hot

if not they are going to have a tough time. They will need to score a lot of runs to keep up with this Rays team. Hammels will have to be lights out.

We’ve got a long way to go and a short time to get there.
