BTW, for those of you who don't recognize me (and why would you?), I am the artist formerly known as HoustonCardinal. I hated that moniker so I will now be known as chuckb. Not sure how I came up w/ that one. Go Rays!

I’ve been trying to figure out who the hell chuckb is for about 10 minutes and when I saw the poster had over 5,000 posts, I was embarrassed I didn’t recognize the handle.

I'm an acoustic fan myself
I understand the Kate Smith thing, but I just like the simplicity of the acoustic version. But, I’m not sure whether I prefer the big note at the end or for it song to end on a low note. But, about the only thing I enjoyed about the 2004 World Series was this rendition of God Bless America.

the AL seems to be really, really weak at 3b.
’08 Glaus (124 OPS+) would be #3 there, offensively, behind Longoria and Arod.
The interesting thing is that they are going to get weaker- arod, rolen, mora, lowell, guillen, etc are all on the wrong end of the aging curve. Beltre should be in his prime, but seems to be a 100-ish OPS player with ++ defense who had one great year offensively. The only guy who might challenge longoria for “second-best 3B in the league” next year would be Gordon, if he could get his stuff together. Or Peralta or kinsler or young, if they move them to 3rd and they have good years.
Makes you wonder about the trade value of Troy Glaus/Freese/Craig/Wallace this offseason. Might be higher than we think it is.

Hanging over at the A's Board
Lot’s of Talk about trading Huston Street for Freese. With Chavez always hurt they need a 3B. Seems like a solid deal for both teams. They get a cost controlled player while we get a closer.

I can't imagine
Billy Beane would be happy w/ that. I’d have to say that that would be a great deal (at first glance) for the Cards and I’m a fan of using Perez in that role. Street is worth more than a AAA 3B who’s a decent prospect. Maybe Freese +…

Oaklands average of 3B over 2008
.242/.318/.369/.686 worst in the MLB. So they really do need a 3B bad.
Chavez is signed through 10 with an option for 2011.
Huston has two more years of Arb left vs 6 years of Freese.
I think we could add another prospect to sweeten the deal but the basic framework seems solid

I think I would do
Freese + Mortensen. It still seems low. Won’t some other team get in on the deal? There just aren’t that many closers out there — particularly those who are still in their arbitration years. We could allow Perez to be the setup man and trade Street in a year for something like Freese+ and allow Perez to inherit the role in 2010.

well, street isn't really a "closer"
any more than Franklin is a closer. Street blew 7/25 save opportunities this year, and lost his closing job in July.
But he’d be cheap; i can’t see him getting much of an arbitration raise, and he might serve as a capable 8th-inning guy. Since freese isn’t likely to ever be a cardinal, we might as well get something for him. Maybe Street could have a decent season and we could move him at the deadline for a prospect and promote Perez?

I'm not sure I know one off the top of my head
but Street lost his closing job this past season, mostly because he wasn’t very good.
I’d rather keep Freese as an insurance policy for Glaus and put Motte or Kinney in the closers role.

I'm concerned about Wallace
he has been absolutely dreadful in AFL after looking like a beast at every other level.
I used to think that we needed to move 2 of the 3 to fill other holes but I’m beginning to think we should let them play. Let Freese play, then move him when Wallace is ready.

I, too,
am concerned about Craig’s ability to stick at third, and have always doubted Wallace’s ability to do so. I guess my only point is that Street would be the best of the options should we decide not to go w/ Perez.

Played a full college season, a second half of minor league ball, and now the AFL.
I know most of these guys play summer leagues and stuff, but the travel has to be something he’s not used to for this long of a season.

and not watching him, it’s hard to tell if his bat is just slow because of fatigue or what.
It just has slowed my optimism that he could be here ASB next year as a LF option/bench player at the rate he was going. It wasn’t ever truly realistic but that doesn’t mean I can’t dream.
