Pujols Undergoes Elbow Surgery
According to Press Release
"The St. Louis Cardinals announced today that All-Star first baseman Albert Pujols underwent surgery on his right elbow earlier today in a procedure that included decompression and transposition of the ulnar nerve.
The surgery, which was performed by Cardinals team physician Dr. George Paletta, did not require reconstruction of the medial collateral ligament. Pujols will begin his rehabilitation this week and is expected to make his recovery by Spring Training."
For this type of surgery:
"Avoid forceful use of the involved arm, including manual labour, heavy lifting, and sports involving use of the upper limb, until six weeks after the surgery, at which time all activity restrictions are eliminated."

AY CHIHUAHUA!
man, there goes the whole season. I have lost all faith in the Card’s medical staff, but hopefully, they will be right on this one and ‘09 won’t be over before it even starts. Here’s to a speedy recovery, Albert!

according to what i have seen...this did not fix the problem
he still will need TJ at some point…this just relieved some of the pressure that builds up through inflammation

That's the impression I got

might need
“might need” TJ at some point but maybe never, nobody can predict what will happen. sounds like depends on if the ligament get torn all the way through at some point – but it might not ever get that bad. who knows.

The only issue I have
is how out of nowhere the news came from.
For an organization which claimed last year they would start being more transparent on the injury front, they are still rather secretive.

More than likely
They didn’t know they were going to do it until this morning and yesterday. Still better than the Colts, who just admitted Manning had surgery 2 months ago.

I'm glad they don't
I prefer my sports team to be secretive about all dealings – medical an otherwise. we as fans want to know everything that is going on – but i’m glad the teams don’t disclose all info. Secrets are good.
It was a great move by the Colts to no say anything until Manning’s knee was not a question anymore.

this surgery
is not that big of a deal. It’s actually one that I need in both of my elbows. It doesn’t involve any ligaments, it’s simply the repositioning of a nerve (the one that makes your ‘funny bone’ funny).

in an ironic twist that I just remembered ...
the orthopedist that I saw about this problem is in Paletta’s orthopedic group out in chesterfield.

Does this mean APu will have less pain in his elbow?
Which could lead to an even more productive APu?
I am with dunc4life though, now I expect his arm to fall off.

seriously,
think how beastly Albert would be if his elbow is better than in the past? Barry Bonds, move aside, here come’s Albert!

Recall this is the same procedure
that was discussed vis a vis Chris Carpenter last summer when he had that shutdown period during rehab. It’s not even close to Tommy John, it’s more of a pain-relieving measure. Pujols is still at risk for surgery, but Andrews, at least, didn’t think it was necessary yet. Sounds like the right call.

I'm Nervous
This isn’t a “no-big-deal” procedure.
It means that Pujols’ elbow is continuing to loosen up and that he will definitely need Tommy John surgery at some point. They moved the nerve around to try to reduce the strain on it, and resulting pain and/or loss of sensation, until they actually need to perform the Tommy John surgery.
However, this isn’t a zero-risk procedure in and of itself.
