If 4 years ago
someone would have said "in 2008 Mark Prior and Todd Wellemeyer will sign for the same amount of money" I would've called them nuts.

But lookee how times change.

On with the (good) youth movement!

Woo hoo!
If I were him I would have asked for some sort of bonus for "buckets of sweat lost per game." He's like the new Esteban Yan.

On the Money
He is the white Esteban Yan. He sweats worse than John Goodman in a Jalapeno eating contest.

Why the performance bonuses only applying to STARTS? Hmmmmmm, no relief oriented bonuses?
...hmmmmmm again. Won't the manager control whether he gets his bonuses?

How about handin' me another helpin' of those mashed taters...thank you very much!

Technically
the manager pretty much controls whether or not any player can reach their bonuses (bonie?)

Being a #5/long reliever swingman, I think Wellemeyer might be able to hit his 100 innings pitched bonus.

With some sort of uncomfortable grimace
related incentive clause?  Maybe $500 for every minute he spends staring at the catcher like there's a knife in his back?

by Valatan on Jan 28, 2008 6:35 PM EST up reply actions

well I guess that's it, then
the bullpen will be:

Welley
Wonderbrad
Franklin
Flores (r1 or r2)
TJ
Springer
Izzy

No room for Motte or Perez, or even Kinney.  Does anyone know if Thompson or TJ have options left?

by SleepyCA on Jan 28, 2008 6:34 PM EST reply actions

I would think that Johnson does
But I'm not 100% sure--his MLB debut was only in 2005, after all, and I"m pretty sure that was a September callup

You assume to much
you may have Reyes/Wellemeyer in the wrong places.

Yep
That would be my guess too.  I guess Wellemeyer could make the rotation if Reyes either sucks or gets traded.

on the whole
I am very much fond of incentive clauses.  I wish all contracts were written that way.

Speaking of arbitration
Looks like Mark Loretta and the Astros are going to go to arbitration since both sides are over $2 M away.

Of course, the Astros never wanted Loretta to accept arbitration and will release him since the arbitration contract is non-guaranteed.

Is it sad I'd rather take the 36 year old Loretta to play 2B than Adam Kennedy?

Sad yes, Crazy no
Loretta '07:  .287 / .352 / .372

Kennedy '07:  .219 / .282 / .290

Plus, Loretta's Baseball Reference page is sponsored by a Beastie Boys Tribute Band, while Kennedy's is unsponsored.  I think that tells the story more than the numbers ever could.

Alright, I'm in
bring me the head of Mark Loretta!

Wait...

I realize
It's fun to make fun of Wellemeyer but he was pretty good for the Cardinals last year.

If you told me a guy would give me 63.2 innings with a 3.11 ERA, 1.272 WHIP, and 7.2/9 IP I would have asked where I sign up.

Do I think it will continue? I don't know. But he is a hard thrower--something we don't have a lot of--and he can strike a guy out--another thing we aren't loaded with.

He was good in 11 starts--I realize it's 11 starts but I'm OK with him coming back. If he and Pineiro can perform in 2008 anywhere close to where they did for STL in 2007 then the staff won't be half bad.

yea but....
Whats the good in having a guy that cant get past the 5th inning? He throws so wildly that he has already reached upwards of 90 pitches after 5 innings.

We don't need that in our rotation because we will end up with another overworked bullpen by the stretch run and I am one of the people who thinks this team has real potential.

I'm ok with him in the bullpen, that way he doesnt get his incentives because he really isnt worth 1M.

Gotta love this youth movement! Aaron Miles and Josh Phelps are the future of this team!

agreed
I don't know that he's great for the rotation but I kind of like him as a swing man--I like him more than Brad Thompson anyway. I guess that's my point.

yeah, but...
it would be nice if we only had ONE guy that couldn't get past the fifth inning.  we could probably get by with just one. that being said, i hope we don't need Welly in the rotation, but i would rather see him get starts than a lot of the guys on the FA market.

$1M doesn't buy what it used to...

Those Pilgrims ain't lookin' so proud now...

Since we don't have a Hot Stove thread
today, the Twins upped their offer to 5y/$100 M to Santana and he turned it down.

The Mets have pulled Carlos Gomez from the Carribean WS.

So, $20 M a year wasn't good enough for Johan?  Are the Mets really going to give him $130 M?

Wow.
I know that Johan is amazing, but, just wow.  How much ($$) is enough?
