Around SBN: A Look At Strikeout Rates By Pitch Type

Gary Bennett stuck to the bench

I just read Bernie's bits entry about our old friend Gary Sno-Cones Bennett and how he's not starting.  Basically, his contract gives him an extra $2500 for every start he'd make now.  Bernie points out that Kelly Stinnett has played more often lately.

Star-divide

My theory is that Tony knows Gary's contract, and, as Bernie pointed out the other day, Gary's swung at some 3-0 pitches this year.  This is Tony's way of punishing him, rather than ownership being cheap and telling TLR not to start Gary.

Thoughts?  Does anybody care?

$2500
Hah, that is nothing to the owners.  I can imagine that has anything to do with why you would not start a guy.

Back Injury
He can't start, but is cleared to come in for an inning or two in a pinch, last I heard.

Bernie knows that. Sounds like he's trying to stir up some class warfare BS again.

pretty lame...
by bernie.  like liam said, he knows bennett's back is bothering him.

Lame indeed
I was surprised when I read that. Seems pretty unnecessary to point out.
Well, let's go to the old mill anyway -- get some cider!

i am sure...
that you guys also noticed that he was talking about wainwrights era lately, and as everyone here knows, it was a subject here first

my question is where did he get stuff before VEB?

There's one baseball team that
Bernie and LBoros write about on a daily basis.  Over 200 odd days or so, there are only so many topics that are really worth covering.  Overlap is bound to happen and I doubt Bernie is continuously poaching ideas from our esteemed blogger.

bernie
just this week it was talked about on veb how every time something pretty interesting was used on here it would show up in bernies column later

erik even mentioned how when he posted a very early sunday column, a few times stuff had been in bernies sunday column

so u can think they are just thinking alike if u wish, i think bernie gets a lot of ideas here

Sometimes when I read something
and then try to write about it, I have a hard time moving past that well-formed articulated idea for my own writings.

I'm not saying that it doesn't happen or that it's all coincidence but I also think we shouldn't make it into a witch hunt to find everything we think was poached.  The thread was about Bennett. . .not Bernie's alleged borrowing habits.

by azruavatar on Sep 22, 2007 6:57 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

you are correct
the thread is about bennett, and i think bernie was either trying to stir the pot, or hadnt paid enough attention to know bennett was hurt, either way, imho, he doesnt come off well

as far as a "witch hunt"? i think that is going a bit far about what i said, i was basically continuing a discussion from earlier in the week which said many things from veb end up in a bernie column

Pujols is the greatest Cardinal in my lifetime.

Azru is right
Bernie's not doing anything remotely wrong by making similar observations to anyone else.

He's got a following on the whole "Ownership is cheap" kick that needs to be fed. I find that meme annoying, much more than Bernie pointing out that the 2007 Cardinal team at times resembles a creature from a monster movie.

I'm as proud of the VeB community and as impressed by the work of the primary writers as the next guy, but these kinds of turf wars over ideas are just as useless as Bernie's anti-rich-guy bullshit kind of stuff that keeps him from being a truly great columnist.

I don't see how ownership could have made the 2007 season any more successful by raising payroll more than they did. To bring this up now, when the team is so very down, is beneath a great columnist. And is beneath what I expect from Bernie, as much as he wants to distance himself from the Kool-Aid drinking crowd that I'd more happily associate myself with.

i never said bernie was wrong for doing that, i was just pointing it out, as i said above, following up on that post from this week

I would like to go on record
as saying that Bernie gets paid to stir shit up.

In general, that's what he does. Now, personally, I don't like him or his writing.  Other people do. If he poaches ideas here, that's on him - he's the one who has to look in the mirror.

there is no secret weapon...there is only Oquendo.

Incentives
Miles also has playing time incentives, and for some reason he keeps playing. Another 33 plate appearances and he'll get another $50,000.

TLR
I don't think cheap ownership has anything to do with it.  Just wondering if TLR is holding a grudge against Sno Cones.

Gary Bennett
I heard he has a bulging disc in his back or something like that.
That would be pretty cruddy if he isnt playing due to $$.
He seems like a real great guy- just by watching pregame and postgame shows.
