Around SBN: Stan Van Gundy Fired As Head Coach Of The Magic

Game 149 Open Thread: September 17, 2007

kendrick thompson
8-4, 4.02 6-5, 5.05

these are two pretty similar pitchers; they don't strike many guys out, they give up too many baserunners and extra-base hits, but they survive by throwing it over the plate and keeping the ball (mostly) on the ground. kendrick has prevented home runs more reliably than thompson this year, but otherwise they've got pretty comparable track records. the phils need this game pretty badly; they're a game and a half out in the wild-card chase.

ran across this interview with whitey herzog in a minnesota paper; mildly interesting read. but the fact-checker screwed up the name of the reliever who gave up that grand slam to hrbek in game 6; it was ken dayley, not bill dawley.

Why isn't anyone showing him the video comparisons Carlos Gomez did last year?  Mulder needs to get back to his A's pitching mechanics.

by spants on Sep 18, 2007 12:24 AM EDT up reply actions

I wonder if he can pitch that way any more?
He also has a bad hip condition similar to Isringhausen, that we inherited when we acquired him from the A's. It was the source of his original DL stint with Oakland. He simply may not be physically able to carry that much of his pitching load with his legs any more, and may never be a "drop and drive" pitcher again.

the hip is the key.  Shouldn't he be getting more torso rotation, though?  And maybe tighten up his kick a little.  He's just to upright, you know?

Trying to be an optimist
maybe it's because he's had no regular routine.  He was pretty consistent when he played a full game every five days but he's certainly not good when he's just chosen to pitch a few innings at a time here and there.  I hope they trade him and let someone else rediscover his sinker and then let him be an end of rotation starter.

by SleepyCA on Sep 17, 2007 9:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, it seems the best way to right a
struggling pitcher is to let them pitch their way out of it; considering he hasn't pitched much at all the last few weeks, it's not a surprise to me that there would be command and location issues.  There really was no reason at this point to not let him pitch through the bottom of the line-up; Cavasoz gave up three additional runs.  Maybe Brad does, maybe he doesn't.  But the only way to learn to pitch, and to learn to pitch out of jams, is to give him a chance to do it.

I also really, really hope we didn't give up on Thompson yet, but that's MY irrational side speaking.

by SleepyCA on Sep 17, 2007 10:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, rewind if you will.......
Reyes second trip back from the minors, they started him so the Phillies scouts could get a look.  It was against the Brewers, end of July, early August sometime, he threw 6 innings, 67 pitches, 1 walk, and either 4 or 6 K's.  He won that night and used exclusively his fastball, change-up and slurvy/curvy thing, up and down, in and out of the zone.  He was magnificent that game, so what happened?  He put up games like that almost every time out in AAA, and occasionally up here.  I just got to ask is he hurt?  Have the losses taken such a toll that he's too mentally fried?  Whatever, that low fastball or whatever it is, takes away the effectiveness of the change-up, and he can't locate it, that pitch ain't going to work, not this season.  I sense they'd rather not deal with him anymore, and he knows it.  It's a bad situation all around.

If his blog accepted comments, I'd leave a very nice one for him to read after the game. It'd be good to see some decent innings out of him down the stretch.

Weird: the only effective pitchers out of the six we've used so far are the lefthanders.

With Tuscon this year, 23% of Barden's balls in play were line drives. That's a good number and would support about a .350 BABIP.

They've been disappointing these last two series (so far in this one).

These are the best two crews, I've thought—Tim McLelland's and Ed Monatague's—but even McLelland had a squirrelly strikezone in his game against Chicago.

needed a MRI i headed out to run some meaningless errands. i just couldnt set through another blow out loss after we lose yet another key player. call me a fair weather fan, or a bandwagon fan if you feel like it. but this season has just been so hard that i just cant take it any more. i cant take it all keep going so terribly wrong.

so when i get back, alberts up and the score is 11-12 phills. albert is promptly walked. & LUD flys out. the IZZY hangs a pitch & its 11-13. i look at my dad and say maybe i should leave again. he just laughs. its all he can do sense he cant talk any more. but i stick around and sure enough, the Cards come up just short.

oh well. such is the luck of the 07 Red Birds.

i should be around tomorrow night. unless Albert finally blows out his hammy. GOD forbid that happens, but if it does. i'm going to start drinking again.
