No more dreaming of Eric Byrnes?
Found this on mlb.com today:

May or may not happen, but I've seen Byrnes's name on a few free agent wishlists around here.
3 yr /30 M. Considering it would have taken more than that for him to sign elsewhere, do you Byrnes supporters think the Cardinals would have gone higher, like say 4 / 40 M?
Thoughts?
Boomer.

ankiel wont be spending another year in the minors. he is out of options. after 30+ homers this year he wont make it through waivers even if his plate discipline is bad.
I could be wrong
The underlying point, though, is valid: after this season, SOMEONE is going to give Ankiel a shot to play in the bigs in 2008. Will it be the Cards or not?
options
he is out of options. he is currently on the 40 man roster. he is not eligible for free agency so he cant just sign a minor league contract. the only way to get him to the minors is to designate him for assignment/place him on waivers or give him his unconditional release. he cant sign his minor league deal until that happens and he has to pass through waivers in each of the scenarios. however, i believe if he was given his unconditional release he could refuse the claim and become a free agent. he could then re-sign with the cards but he'd have to be open to staying in the minors. i am not sure but the commissioners office might think that is somewhat suspicious. players given their unconditional release tend not to immediately re-sign with the same team.
Quentin's been...
As for Ankiel and options, any player without options has to pass through waivers once they break camp in April in order to be sent to the minors. No getting around it. Ankiel sticks in '08 or he's gone.
