No more dreaming of Eric Byrnes?

Found this on mlb.com today:

May or may not happen, but I've seen Byrnes's name on a few free agent wishlists around here.

3 yr /30 M. Considering it would have taken more than that for him to sign elsewhere, do you Byrnes supporters think the Cardinals would have gone higher, like say 4 / 40 M?

Thoughts?
Boomer.

Eric Byrnes
They might of done 4/40 M who knows?
but now we can dream of Carlos Quentin.

Exactly...
We need to go after Quentin.  Rick needs another year in AAA to work on his plate discipline.  Quentin could rotate in the outfield with Jimmy, Juan, and Dunc...unless of course we trade Juan and Carlos gets RF to himself.

torn labrum
i really liked quentin before.  he reportedly has a small tear in his labrum.  after seeing rolen struggle with shoulder issues that makes me a little nervous.  the cards should probably be investing in the rotation anyway.

ankiel wont be spending another year in the minors.  he is out of options.  after 30+ homers this year he wont make it through waivers even if his plate discipline is bad.

I could be wrong
The way I understand options, it's once a player is called up to the majors he has to have "options" to be sent back down without clearing waivers.  There is no obstacle to a "veteran" player who is out of options signing a contract and playing an entire season in AAA--no waiver clearance needed for that.  So, Ankiel could sign a contract for 2008 and spend the entire season in Memphis without going through waivers.

The underlying point, though, is valid: after this season, SOMEONE is going to give Ankiel a shot to play in the bigs in 2008.  Will it be the Cards or not?

options
i'm not 100% sure  but i think there is an obstacle and that is that rick has to want to start the year at memphis.

he is out of options.  he is currently on the 40 man roster.  he is not eligible for free agency so he cant just sign a minor league contract.  the only way to get him to the minors is to designate him for assignment/place him on waivers or give him his unconditional release.  he cant sign his minor league deal until that happens and he has to pass through waivers in each of the scenarios.  however, i believe if he was given his unconditional release he could refuse the claim and become a free agent.  he could then re-sign with the cards but he'd have to be open to staying in the minors.  i am not sure but the commissioners office might think that is somewhat suspicious.  players given their unconditional release tend not to immediately re-sign with the same team.

Quentin's been...
a flailing maniac up there... I'm actually glad he's injured, for his sake. I don't think anyone will trade for him for the simple reason that he's an unknown risk at this point. The D-Backs were openly saying that they really liked Byrnes, but he would have to go b/c they wanted to spend their nickels elsewhere. The fact they changed their mind shows that Quentin can't be counted on for anything right now.

As for Ankiel and options, any player without options has to pass through waivers once they break camp in April in order to be sent to the minors. No getting around it. Ankiel sticks in '08 or he's gone.

Ease LaDunketty out gently, thank him profusely, and... Hire Antonetti!!!

Eric Byrnes
Is playing out of his element,  an injury risk and typically has a dropoff in the second half.

You know, this contract might not make baseball
sense, but it makes economic sense...he's the kind of players fans come out to see, and the D's don't really have a lot of "star" power.  He'll be fun while he lasts....I agree his kind of play makes him an injury risk
