Return of the captain?

I've seen it said in a few diffrent diarys so I thought I'd ask.  Do you favor the return of what most of us considerd the captain Edger Rentria?  I know most of you guys would welcome him back no problem because of what kind of year he's having, but what about the other guys on the team?  I'll be honest I kind of thing of Edger as a trader after he went to boston.  Let's be honest the money wasn't that much of a diffrance.  What do you guys think?

He's back, but never the captain again.

They don't really welcome him, he just happens to be there.

Albert and Edger fight the way Jeter and A-Rod fight.

Who's Edger Rentria?
And what did he trade after he went to boston?

Pelts
Mink pelts.

I'm sure Edgar would be welcomed back just fine. He choose to make more money, I don't think anyone thinks he is a traitor.

ahh...
traitor... Is there a single major league baseball player that opposes cashing in during free agency?

Seems like he would bring a lot in return. $9 million for 2008 with the Sox picking up maybe a third of that, and an $11 million option in 2009 with what amounts to a free buyout. And he's posting a 131 OPS+ with decent defense.

The thing with Renteria is that he has these off years that seem to come out of the blue. I'd be opposed to sending out something like Reyes-Anderson-Low A prospect for the guy.

I think this is the sort of thing that matters
more to fans than it does to the players.  Most of them are professionals, and don't get into these little childish tiffs, IMO.

Also, how many guys left on the roster were even teammates of Edgar's?  Pujols, Rolen, Edmonds, Izzy,  Ankiel, and Molina are all that I count off of the top of my head without thinking too deeply.

Carp and Springer, too
There's been a lot of turnover in three years.

I never did get the whole
"he's a traitor" junk.  He was a great Cardinal and took a better offer to go to Boston.  I wanted him to stay, too, but it's a business and he did what he felt he had to do.

Some Cards' fans got pissy b/c he said something like "Boston wanted him more than the Cards did."  That was true -- Boston was willing to pay more so he was wanted more by Boston.  So what?

I'm not sure we should bring him back, simply b/c of what it would take to do so, but to hold a grudge b/c he signed a contract with another team when he was able to do so is juvenile!  Few of us are locked into our jobs forever and we would all look for better companies/jobs/etc., so why can't Edgar?

just curious
but do you think the bad spelling, and in my case lack of puncuation, are becoming problems because of instant and text messaging where you are just trying to get whatever you want to say typed as fast as you can?
Pujols is the greatest Cardinal in my lifetime.

Yes
It's getting ridiculous.  And annoying.  You can't tell what anyone is trying to say because it's just garbled into one long thought.

And if you are using firefox, it'll spell check postings for you and put a red line under anything you've misspelled.

Renteria yes

I love Eck but consider me one that believes his days of everyday ss and multi-year deals are over. I'm not particularly interested in even having him back on a one year discount deal.

The ss FA market looks dim.  I also am not keen on turning the keys(tone) over to a combo of Miles/Ryan/Kennedy....let those three fight it out for 2b, so

Bring back Edgar.....

He made a financially sound but nonsensical decision in taking his sensitive style to the toughest fans and media in the world.  Bring him home.  Tony knows how to get the best out of him.

I agree--
and IIRC, the team did jerk him around some--making him wait till the last minute for what they knew would be an inferior offer to what the Sox were bringing. At the time I was a bit pissed, but I never considered him a "traitor" and would be very happy to have him back.

by rockin redbird on Aug 27, 2007 3:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Let's not forget
If Renteria hadn't signed with Boston, we wouldn't have had the opportunity to draft a guy by the name of Colby Rasmus.  It was the draft pick we were given when Renteria left that we used to draft Colby.  He's no traitor.  Think of all he did for our organization.  I'd love to have him back.

Tyler Greene...
We took Tyler Greene in the supplemental round.  Colby was our original pick.

we took greene w/ the 30th pick which was ours since we had just won 105 games=best record in league=last pick. colby was a compensation pick at no. 28

Well...
I wood luf to sea Edger Rentria in uh Cards youniform...(heavy sarcasm)

Anyway, I'd like to have Renteria back for the right price seeing as how he's a top tier SS on both sides.  The reason the Cards didn't resign him a few years back is because they had him at one value and the Sox had him at a much higher one...Simple as that.  We ended up with a good player anyway, not as good, but good enough in Eckstein.  I'm not going to sit around and pout that he didn't resign, nor am I going to call him a traitor...He's a good guy, and a good player, and he and the Cardinals made a sound business decision in parting ways.

by redbirdnation8206 on Aug 29, 2007 6:06 PM EDT reply actions

Oh
And I'm not sure where this whole Edgar as captain is coming from.  The last few years the Cardinals haven't really had rah-rah go get 'em tiger leaders (well, maybe Kline I guess) or even one guy who is the unquestioned man...Its always seemed to be a collection of guys who lead by example, starting with the TLR/Duncan combo and trickling down to the MV3, Carp, Izzy, and (when he was here) Edgar Renteria.  I'm not sure its fair to anyone involved to say that Edgar was THE captain, merely another part of the leadership "team."
