Cardinals Acquire Miguel Cairo

That's right, he's back. Take it for whatever you will. I think it's a possible temp-replacement for the Spezio "super-sub" role but I doubt he'll get a call up before the roster expansion.

Cairo ... just depth
I think he is just depth in case Rolen goes down.  With Brendan Ryan taking ABs away from even Eckstein and playing 3 IF positions, there is less need for an IF supersub.

you're right on...
i have been shocked out how many people have been up in arms about this signing. the typical argument is something like 'dewitt's cheap a$$ just picks up players nobody else wants' or 'yet another cardinal retread.' it is so obviouos that this is about rolen and his shoulder--which despite his three hits yesterday, does NOT WORK.  now to me we can either get a guy who's got years of playoff experience--cairo--or call somebody up from the farm who might cost us a couple of important abs or make an error in a crucial situation.  i'm all for cairo and hope he makes it back up in sept--bet you anything he will too...probably get a couple starts

Cairo
is no third baseman and is no real insurance for Rolen.  I suppose he'll give them an extra righthanded bat off the bench when rosters expand, but other than that I expect little or nothing from him.  Jeff Conine would have been more to the point (he always moves to a contender at this time of year), but the Mets had more to offer for him and they really are a contender, not a pretender like the Cardinals.

I'll assume it's the Mets offense
not their pitching that makes them a contender, not a pretender?

Since the ASG, Cardinals have 10th best Team ERA.

Call up PJ Walters!

Yeah--
I think the jury's still out--especially in the NL Central--as to who's a contender and who's a pretender. Lotta craziness can still go down with nearly 40 games left.

Do your research
The Mets pitching staff, as of 8/22/07 is second in the NL in ERA, 3rd in the league in shut outs, and tied for first in batting average allowed.

Meanwhile, they are SIXTH in runs scored so far this year, and that may sound good until you see that divisional foes the Phillies (#1), the Braves (#3) and Marlins (#4) are all ahead of them in the runs scored column.  In the context of the NL East the Mets are actually one of the "worst" run scoring teams.

So, I would say that you are wrong and the Mets pitching is what makes them a contender.

Let me get this straight...Rowand over Pujols??? Really, Tony?

It's the Mets' record
that makes them a contender.  If the Cardinals ever get above .500, I may start changing my tune,

Well,
you had to get all literal on us, Mike!  I agree, that .500 level is a big hurdle and if, and only if, we pass it then we can begin having "contender" discussions.

agreeing with MikeG
I was blowing the trumpet for Conine for two months, especially back when it looked like Ankiel was going to have to wait until Sept.;I love the way Conine hits.
And I felt he was insurance for Pooh and someone to shade Juan.  But alas, he went to the Mets.

Cairo is ok; he's been with us before.  But, along with Conine I was touting picking up Juan Castro from the Reds.  A terrific and versatile defensive player.
