Game 113 Open Thread: August 10, 2007

penny

wainwright

13-3, 2.66

10-8, 4.35

the dodgers were seriously shopping this guy over the winter after signing wolf and schmidt; guess they're glad they couldn't find a taker. penny ranks 2d in the league in wins (after leading in that category last year) and 3d in era; he's allowed only 4 home runs in 149 innings. but he has been mortal since july 1 --- a 4.71 era in 6 starts, with more than 4 walks per 9 ip.

the cardinals have allowed the 2d-most runs in the nl since august 1st (5.7 per game), while the dodgers have scored the fewest (2.5/game). bad pitching beats bad hitting, doesn't it?

I have very little hope of the Cards winning
tonight.  I think Wainer is amazing and I like the 'buzz' Ankiel has given most of us but this team has been nothing but a letdown all year and tonight just seems like another opportunity for them to pull the football away from us again.

Oh Good Grief!

Penny has always been a strong
starter and drops off after the all star break.  Although his drop off isn't so steep that he stops winning--he just wins less than he seems like he should after starting so strong.  Did that make sense?  I take nothing for granted, for us or he dodgers.

We've let Chris Young and Brad Penny of the
hook the last two nights when they have erratic control and not really throwing very good pitches.

Hell, we let Maddux get out of a 1st and 3rd, no outs situation with only giving up 2 runs, I believe.

Brad hit a slow roller up the first base line. Albert charged it and picked it up in front of the 1st base bag. then he just ran down the line and tagged out Brad who was still standing in the box thinking the ball was foul.

It's baseball smarts
When your pitcher is over 100 pitches, in the 9th inning, with the score tied...you should, at the very worst, have him on a short leash.  And if someone gets a hit (Russell Martin) you pull him and bring in relief.  If it backfires, it backfires.  But if you want to play the odds, then you get him some help.

by Mr Redbird on Aug 10, 2007 10:34 PM EDT up reply actions

It's also baseball smarts
that is your pitcher is unhittable you keep him out there until he is on empty.

you know
if you had come on here in the bottom of the 8th, and said "TLR needs to take AW out now, he's running on fumes"- I'd respect what you said.  But second guessing- just saying that he made a mistake after everyone KNOWS he made a mistake- garners nothing.

This is one of the few pitching decision made by TLR this year that I support fully. AW made a mistake to Loney--and, as someone else posted, probably should have pulled after Rolen's error (I mean Martin's hit)--but sending him out to start the 9th is definitely defensible. It's not like he put Flores or Jiminez in to pitch the 9th.

"(...)and, as someone else posted, probably should have pulled after Rolen's error (I mean Martin's hit)--but sending him out to start the 9th is definitely defensible."

That's what I said.  He was great for 8.1 IP.  But put him on a short leash.  If he gets in trouble (a la Martin's hit), save his ass.  If we have such a good bullpen, why not use it right there?

by Mr Redbird on Aug 10, 2007 11:40 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah
i replied to the wrong post, and it's quite funny that I paraphrased the post I mistakenly replied to (yay, beer).  but the point remains that it is one thing to say it was a mistake AFTER the home run, and quite another to say it beforehand.  If Loney had GIDP, leaving him in would have looked like genius (and Springer could just as easily have given up a base hit/error to an excellent hitter like martin, and a HR to a hot young player like Loney).

I hope the offense
wakes up before we go to Milwaukee & Chicago.

I like Hal McRae but we really need to get a different hitting coach next year.

I question this decision
Miles and Enc are sitting on the bench. If it's right for Duncan to come out in the 8th, it's right for Kennedy to come out NOW.

Why no Enc?
He must be getting traded.... that's the ONLY possible explanation I can come up with right now.

boo Tony. no way the flacid bat of AK should have been hitting there with the game on the line.

even Juan had a better chance. because as we all know, he's Mr. Clutch.

What a pisser
AK is our WORST freaking hitter, heck I would have loved to see even Gary Bennett bat there over AK.

Bring up Ryan for crying out loud and just bench AK.

Ugh
That was a frustrating loss.  To have AW pitch that well for 8.1 innings only to take the loss.  I still don't understand why neither AW or AK was pinch-hit for by Juan Enc.  I know it's not the lefty-righty thing because Ludwick batted against Saito.  Just a frustrating loss, nothing more, nothing less.

by Mr Redbird on Aug 10, 2007 10:54 PM EDT reply actions

The Kennedy strikeout pitch
was 10 inches over his head....(about 36 inches off the ground)

by saveferris on Aug 10, 2007 10:55 PM EDT reply actions

Where was Juan?
Is he that far in the doghouse that he honestly thought Adam 'I can't hit my weight' Kennedy was a better option?

Furthermore, why in the hell would you bring in Ryan Ludwick, who can't hit breaking pitches that are away in against a pitcher that throws nothing but breaking pitches away (with a 94 mph fastball to boot).

Call up PJ Walters!

still
one of the best games of the year.  And it should have been 1-0 going into the bottom of the 9th, as Martin struck out on a pitch that just wasn't called a strike before he got his "hit".
"This is a ball club with issues." -Nats announcers (talking about the Cardinals)

by SleepyCA on Aug 10, 2007 10:56 PM EDT reply actions

bullshit
what a dumb way to lose a game, with your worst hitter at the plate and two guys who have repeatedly demonstrated that they are far superior to Kennedy....

As far as Wainwright in the 9th, I would've run him back out there but on the short leash: anybody reaches, he automatically comes out and Izzy, Percy, or Franklin comes in. Maybe the runs still score, I don't fault Tony for that.

But when the game is on the line, down one run at home, two outs, runners on 1st and 2nd, and the single worst hitter on the team is allowed to bat when two hitters who are considerably better stay put--I blame that on Tony.

by nota bene on Aug 10, 2007 10:56 PM EDT reply actions

QFT
Nailed it in one.  Waino should've pitched, the ump shouldn't have tightened up the zone against Martin, and Kennedy should've been pinch hit for.

by Phyrkrakr on Aug 10, 2007 11:04 PM EDT up reply actions

that said
I will reiterate that this game was pretty impressive, other than the Kennedy AB....AW and Penny went toe-to-toe and AW just couldn't get any help. It's kind of a relief to know that we're in games more often now (even if we still lose) as opposed to losing them 15-2.

(P.S. If TLR was worried about a righty-lefty thing at the end, why not PH Miles, who switch hits? arrrrrgh)

by nota bene on Aug 10, 2007 11:00 PM EDT reply actions

I've had it with AK
I know Tony loves him because he is a veteran and we gave him a big contract, but the guy is just awful at the plate (might be the worst in the majors).

But he shouldn't have been batting there in the first place.
Should have been Juan, or even Bennett up there.

Ugg
You guys have got to be kidding me!!!

Kennedy snared a hard as hell ball last night and turn a key double play.  He made lots of good plays in the field and did get one of the few hits off Penny.  Just because he did what Rolen and Ludwick did before him, taking more pitches I think while doing it, against an all star closer you crucify him.

by StLHugo on Aug 11, 2007 12:29 PM EDT up reply actions

"you crucify him"
It's not just that at bat last night, it's been all season.  Kennedy has been horrible at the plate this whole year.

We need more production from an everyday player than what Kennedy has been giving. I really have no problem with his defense but he just isn't "earning his keep" so to speak with the Cards this year. And yeah that can cause alot of us to "crucify" him when a lot of us and I'm sure the team has expected a little more production.

He alone is not the reason the Cards have struggled this year but he sure hasn't helped.  And to be honest I feel bad for the guy, but it's been an all season thing now and if Tony can play somebody that can get a little more production hitting wise at 2nd then it's time for someone else to take his spot, even with the contract Adam has.

by KYCards on Aug 11, 2007 12:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes he has struggled..
one look at his near 200 batting average will tell you that he hasn't been good but last night was not his fault and it seems people want to put the blame on him.  AK has been working hard lately and if you look at his pre and post all star split you would see that.

.210/.280/.252 0 HR
.241/.290/.431 3 HR

He is slumping in August again (.136 BA) but he has picked up his game since the break.  No it isn't good, and yes Ryan would be better, but I think we need to stick with AK right now.  Defensively he is better then Miles and Offensively he is coming around.

I know we have been facing some real tough pitching, but our offense really needs to wake up soon. (I'm looking at you Albert, Duncan and Rolen)  Bad time for those 3 guys to get into a slump.

wow, it was a really good game, pitchers duel.

when Ankiel's name was announced for the line ups he got as big a pop as Pujols.

WHY DO WE STILL FREAKING START AK? HE IS FREAKING TERRIBLE!

by Pujols on Aug 10, 2007 11:44 PM EDT reply actions

Put that one on Mr. Infallable
God, I would love to hear La Russa say "well, I made a mistake in that one."  No, Tony....you made two.

I WAS at the game tonight and EVERYONE in my section was yelling for a lefty with the runner on in the Ninth.  So no 20/20 hindsight necessary.  We all knew this wasn't going to end well.  Actually, we'd have been more upset if Ludwick or Kennedy had actually ended the game, and made TLR look like a genius.  Well, tonight, Tony, you were outthought by everyone in section 435.  Not the best way to earn your keep.  I think his decision was based on his archaic fondness for wins.  I laud him for the pitcher batting 8th, if only he would put Miles 9th.  But tonight....AHHHHHRRRRGGG.

And then to let Kennedy bat?  Where was Miles?  Where was Enc?   So many better choices.  Maybe the thinking was a guy with a .218 average gets a hit every 5 at bats, so he was WAY overdue.

If losing TLR didn't also mean losing Jockety, who is arguable the best in the game, I'd say pull the trigger.  I have no idea how that'll pan out, but it wouldn't hurt my feelings to see a manager who's making some poor decisions, and essentially single handedly losing games, sent packing, regardless of past performance.

Thank you for your tolerance.

nobody is mentioning letting Yaddy run
I have no beef with letting Wainer stay out there. He was absolutely cruising and has been really good lately.

I do have a problem with not PH Encarnacion in the 9th instead of Ludwick or in place of Kennedy.

But another thing I didn't like was why didn't TLR pinch run for Yaddy? I'm not even sure he could have scored from first on a triple! Surely we could let Kip Wells PR if we didn't want to waste a bench player. Turns out it didn't matter at all, but I don't understand how you don't pull Yaddy off the bases at that point.

Ah well...
