Buehrle Re-signs

In case you haven't heard the news, Buehrle agreed to a four year deal with the White Sox. Here's a link: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070708&content_id=2075690&vkey=news_mlb&fext=. jsp&c_id=mlb

----

I guess we can't count on that as a "shoe-in" for this offseason anymore. Now that that possibility's gone, it's time to move on. Dare we make a move at Zambrano? I can't help but thinking that we won't make a big splash this offseason unless it's in the form of a trade.

well, it was fun speculating. i still think he'll be a cardinal at some point before he retires.

I'm pretty sure he's
intent on being a white sox for the rest of his career, if wwe do get him, he'll be old and washed up
It's pretty sad that i'm praying for .500 now I know how the cubs usually feel.

They'll make no move
as far as pitching.

Carpenter
Mulder
Wainwright
Maroth
Looper/Thompson/Reyes

is what you are going to get.  Narveson will have to be passed through waivers again.

they didn't have the chips to get him anyway
The only way he was coming to stl was as a free agent.

by Big Red on Jul 8, 2007 5:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Well
if Mulder comes back healthy, that's not too shabby of a rotation at all.

I still think that Maroth deal was great, and he's probably a heck of a lot cheaper / less of a risk than signing a #4 starter would have been.

On with the youth movement!

Good for him.
Coming back to St Louis would have been a circus, I wish him nothing but the best on the south side.

So there it is......
I'm going to pat myself on the back.  I made numerous posts stating that Buehrle was going to re-sign with the WhiteSox.  I just knew that's the way it had to go.  If Williams sent him packing, the fans were going to burn the ballpark down......

by jillsinmo on Jul 8, 2007 5:48 PM EDT reply actions

lol
....same as i was thinking as i read that post. self-indulging, really.

by stlcardinalsfang on Jul 8, 2007 6:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Perhaps a bit self indulgent......
I guess I got carried away because I'm so often wrong about these things.  Sorry if I offended.....that was not my intent.

by jillsinmo on Jul 8, 2007 11:23 PM EDT up reply actions

no offense taken.
we (i) thought it was a little weird.

no worries
if we couldnt laugh at ourselves, why would we laugh?

Oh well...
I'm surprised Buehrle didn't just wait to be a free agent, you gotta figure if Zito can get 126 million shouldn't Buerhle be able to command over 100 for 5 years? I dunno, seems weird that he is getting 4 years for what, rumored to be like 60 mil?

Anyway, time to let the speculation begin on where AJ Burnett is going!

by lopey986 on Jul 8, 2007 5:48 PM EDT reply actions

could it be true
that someone actually cares about where they play more than the money? Getting paid 60 mil to play in the city you love for only four years is a hell of a deal as it is. He probably just wanted to close the deal and not get too greedy.
On with the youth movement!

by aet15 on Jul 8, 2007 6:24 PM EDT up reply actions

that's exactly it
He's not an attention whore and simply likes Chicago.  His wife is from Chicago and is on the brink of giving birth to their first child.

Simply put.  He desparately wanted to stay in Chicago and made every comprimise he could possibly make to do so.

by Big Red on Jul 8, 2007 9:40 PM EDT up reply actions

It's still conceivable he could be traded
Ken Williams has been asking for top prospects all across baseball, but the uncertainty of Buehrle's contract status made that scenario impossible. However, a four-year extension (at $56mm, according to ESPN's report) gives the Sox a lot more leverage, and gives cost certainty to any potential trade partners.

Not saying it will happen, but this re-signing should by no means signal the end to the trade speculation.

Kenny Williams...
... said during the telecast of the futures game today that Buehrle was granted more extensive no-trade protection than any White Sox player has ever had.  Sounds like Kenny went with a bend-don't-break approach on Buehrle's request for a full no-trade clause1.

As to what that means, we'll have to see.  Steve Phillips speculated that the Sox may have agreed to additional compensation should Buehrle ever be traded.  Whatever it is, I think it's safe to say that Buehrle's off the market.

i am just glad it is over
it is not the end of the world that we did not get him. with mulder and carp coming back it should still be a good rotation. maybe they will look for a upgrade this winter. i would love to see zambrano as a cardinal .BUT IT IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN
HURRY BACK CARP AND MULDER

Zambrano is the kind of pitcher who can be a real
difference maker.  He's big and strong and he's a beast of a hitter and a terrific competitor.  He's healthy, too.  Would be a great pick up for any team that could get him.  I suspect the Cubs will do all they can to keep him though.....

by jillsinmo on Jul 8, 2007 11:36 PM EDT reply actions

He's also weird as all get out
in the 5th inning today, trailing 3-2 he inexplicably began throwing exclusively from the stretch.

The Pittburgh announcer said "I don't want to make myself look like an idiot, but I guess I haven't be paying attention.  When did Zambrano start throwing from the stretch?"

it would be very interesting
to see how Duncan would handle Zambrano.

by Baseball addict on Jul 9, 2007 10:58 AM EDT up reply actions

Oh, dear,
Zambrano strikes me as someone who wouldnt' want to be told by ANYBODY what to do.  And he's a big man..........don't see how Duncan or anyone will ever make Carlos do anything he doesn't want to do.  At least not for long....

by jillsinmo on Jul 9, 2007 4:26 PM EDT up reply actions

I will definately agree with you here
I imagine him as if he were a bigger, scarier, younger, more talented, version of jason marquis
