ISO: Medical knowledge on Rolen's cortisone

As lboros pointed out this morning, we can all see the positive results of Rolen's cortisone shot (both last october and over the past week).

Any medical practitioners out there who know how long we should expect this to last? Do the benefits wear off? Could he simply get another shot if they do?

As we cling to the last remnants of hope this season, I think we all can agree that any chance of contending whatsoever is contingent on the productivity of Scott Rolen.

It can last for months
or it can wear off after a few weeks.  As SilentBob usually says, "It's more of an art than a science"

The cortisone frees up the shoulder
as it had tightened up.  Using it is supposed to allow most normal people to rehab easier in hopes of improving whatever is wrong with you before it tightens up again.

With Rolen's scar tissue, the only real rehab he can have is breaking it loose.  He should try to dive head first as much as possible and run into as many Korean 1st basemen as he can...without breaking his shoulder again. :D

cortisone is teh awesome
It worked great for my neck, but my body doesn't take the same abuse as a professional athlete's.  He should be pain-free for at least a month, from there who knows. Let's just keep him pumped full of the stuff to be sure.

Side Effects
Hydrocortisone, as all corticosteroids, has a side effect of connective tissue breakdown if the dosage is too high.

Most physicians limit cortisone injections to 3 or less per site per year.  Many people with connective tissue disorders and rheumatoid conditions benefit from it so much that they suffer through the side effects because it makes them feel so much better.

Larry Walker had 3 injections in less than 2 months.  Thats how bad his neck condition was.

I would hope
that the trainers and PT's are working with Scotty on stretching his shoulder out daily.  After the injection, his pain should be low and hopefully they could mobilize and stretch the scar tissue out the maximize the benefits of the anti-inflammatory.

Thanx Bobby...
...exactly the type of info I was looking for.

I wonder if he might get another one in late Aug or something.
