Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Tony Gwynn

I don't know how many of you watched the Hall-of-Fame ceremonies, but I was thinking about Gwynn saying he changed the way he hit after 1992, when he had been talking to Ted Williams. After checking the numbers, Gwynn had hit .327 through his first 11 seasons, which as you all know, is very good. In his final nine seasons he hit .356, to bring his final average to .338. The fact that a guy was able to do that much better in the latter years of his career is fascinating, and just shows how much Williams knew about hitting.

gwynn became an even better hitter, considering he already had a batting title, He did right?

He spoke way too long however, but still great guy

Williams wrote the book on hitting
Really, he did.

Didn't get to see the ceremonies, but I enjoyed reading Hummel's speech.

Gwynn
Amazingly, the guy had a career year at age 37.

Yeah,
but he was probably juicing.  I mean, look at the size of the guy!  He was a solid wall of muscle!  Wait, not muscle...

Tony Gwynn was, absolutely, one of my two favorite position players, (non Cardinals) when I was growing up.  (Will Clark was the other, and the day I got to see him put on the BOB was one of the greatest I can remember)  What I find amazing is that no Major League team has thrown a wheelbarrow full of money at him to lure him into a hitting coach's position.  Perhaps our own St. Louis Cardinals, who, despite recent successes, still seem to often have a poor approach at the plate.

I watched most of the HOF ceremony on ESPN Classic today, and it was an amazing day.  A celebration of everything right with this game, with two of the best examples you'll ever find.  (Not to take anything away from the Commish, but I've only come to appreciate him in much more recent times.  Gwynn, and to a lesser extent Ripken, had a pretty fair hand in how I feel about baseball.)

I don't need no instructions to know how to rock.

Coach Gwynn
He's been the head coach at San Diego State for half a decade.

Why take the demotion?

Okay,
what about a dumptruck full of money, then?  Or some sort of boat?  Perhaps a railroad hopper car?  C'mon, what sort of portable container full of cash is it going to take?
