Chicago Pundit's reaction to Pujols

Just listened to WMVP-AM radio host, Tom Waddle (ex-NFL receiver) describe what a shocking revelation it was to see Pujols last nite (he hadn't seen him since the WS) and how noticably SMALLER he looked; something a person might be inclined to notice if there is an eight month period between sightings. (compared to the typical VEB/Card fan who sees the players often)

Anything to this? Or is this just symptomatic of the times we live in (i.e. everyone's under a cloud of suspicion during this, The Steroid Era) ?

This was already brought up several times in ST...
Pujols is simply more cut/muscular than he has ever been, he no longer has much of the baby fat that he always used to have. There was even an article about him in a fitness magazine this offseason regarding his workout regime. Typical Chicago media trying to stir stuff up.
Miller sucks.

Living in Chicago,
I can say that Tom Waddle is by no means one of our more respected baseball journalists.
On with the youth movement!

He was fatter at the end of last year
but that is about the only thing.  He always gets fat by the playoffs because he eats whatever he wants during the regular season.

Why is it
that there's always some sort of convenient "explanation" when there's even the slightest suggestion of illicitude regarding Cardinals players?

It's as ridiculous as the constant playing of the "media=villain" card.

The two comments above are contradictory: He's a fitness maven. No, he's a food-loving fat-ass.

So which is it? Or could there be other reasons?

Automatically assuming the best just because he's a Cardinal seems kind of silly.

Clearly...
This is clearly the image of a guy who has given up the roids....

It's just the times we live in though.  Everyone who has power is going to be suspected of steriod use.

I'll shoot this back to the original "pundit"...Derek Lee has experienced a mysterious lack of power this season and looks a little slimmer as well.

Ahh, they are all on the juice anyway...you we kiddin'?

Pitch to swing and misses...not contact. I've never heard of a "seeing eye K"

Pujols changed his diet
for years, Albert ate whatever he wanted and as much as he wanted because he felt he needed 'the energy'.

This past off-season, he took a new approach, as documented in Men's Health.  He is cutting off the baby fat.

But no, it's just Cardinals fans putting their head in the sand.

not really
abstl said that he's lost a lot of his baby fat.  That is true, I think; he looked awful by the end of 2005.  Legs jiggling etc.  He also looks a lot bigger in the upper body this season than he did in the past, though the magazine article had a number of oiled up "glamour shots" and to be honest I see dudes in the gym every day who are much bigger who get tested for steroids regularly.  Anyway if you have mlb.tv you can go back and watch the archived games again; he used to be fat, now he's not as fat, but his arms are bigger.  It's not even really something that is arguable imho.  This radio guy is just an idiot talking out his arse.

As far as the other reply, Albert has said in numerous places (including the muscle and fitness article IIRC) that he comes into the season in his best physical condition and then gains weight over the course of the season because he eats what he feels like eating and works out less in the gym.  Nothing at all contradictory between these two statements.

Panic!!!

no contradiction
No one described him as a food-loving fatass.  They just said he eats more during the season, and that he works out a lot.  It makes perfect sense to me, and it jibes with what Pujols has said about his fitness/nutrition schedulein the past- that he conditions like a madman and counts calories in the offseason and then, when he has to play every day, he eats a lot to keep his strength and weight up in the hard slog through a hot summer.  It seems more reasonable to me to trust what he says than to believe the unfounded speculation of some radio cats who get paid to come up with crap to talk about four hours a day on talk radio...
