Indefensible defense

I think it was in the 50's or early 60's when the Cards put four first basemen in the starting lineup; an aging Musial in left, Joe Cunningham in center, Bill White in right and George Crowe at first.  The current outfield is second only to that lineup in defensive futility. Duncan just can't play the field. The first hit of last night's game would have been caught (pop fly to medium left by Rollins) by a near-average left fielder. Because he can't go back on anything, Duncan positions himself about fifteen feet from the wall no matter what the situation is. Later in the game another similar fly ball fell in. Both were opposite field fly balls by left handers. Phillies' color man (and former left fielder) Gary Matthews Sr. flatly stated that both of those balls should have been caught. Yes, he made a nice play on a ball at the wall, but every defensive play he makes is shaky. Let's face facts: he's a DH in a non-DH league.
If the organization is going to insist on a "pitch to contact" philosophy, then it needs a major upgrade defensively, because Duncan is not alone in his defensive shortcomings. Our best defenders are on the infield corners and we are very weak up the middle. Eckstein and Miles have limited range, and Kennedy looks like he's in his 40's, not 30's. Even when Edmonds was playing he wasn't covering what he used to, and So gave away a game last week (and we haven't seen him since).
Finally, there's Yadi, who I would call a work in progress. To date, he's no Mike Metheny. He has too many lapses in concentration. He has the spectacular arm, but must develop better fundamentals. I'm not down on him (his first error last night should have been given to Miles): he's one of our few plus defenders.
I hope the powers that be decide to be sellers and address needs on defense and with speed. I'd like to see Duncan and Kennedy sent to the Yankees for Cano if that is doable. This is not just frustration from the last few weeks: I've been harping on defense since last year.

Lets talk,
Being a seller sounds good at the moment, however, kennedy and Krap Wells are untradable and the only way to get rid of them is by cutting them.  Cano would be awesome but the only piece we have that would interest the Yankees would be Albert and that wouldnt happen.   Hopefully duncan can become a better fielder, he has only been out there for about one full year (allstar break to allstar break approx) so he will get better.  Looking at the roster, Yadier is is the only other guy besides duncan and pujols with real trade value, and that would be interesting with Bryan Anderson killing AA ball.  However that is another offense for defense trade off which is not the direction this team needs to go in.

Yadi
I don't think I'd Call Yadi, a work-in-progress, not defensively anyways.  He is at least one of the top four or five defensive catchers in baseball.  And comparisons to Matheney may not be fair.  As far as preventing passed balls and wild pitches, Matheny was the best I have ever seen, hands down.

Dunc's defense...
isn't that bad for a left fielder...he's about average.

Oh no!  Bukowski's found the stats...ya'll in for some shizzle now, dawgs.  Dunno, but it sounded a little pitchy.

defense........? errors!
As poor as Kennedy is at the plate and in hopes that he would fill a big hole in the batting order, his defense is NOT lacking...he's .2 above his lifetime FPCT average right now and he's turned in some great plays (if you're watching).

Molina is NOT a work in progress and is currently one of best top defensive catchers in the bigs, and thats also according to the interest other teams have in his glove. He gets asked about by everybody looking for solid catching.

Duncan will be fine in left, Shannon and Walker watch his daily workouts together on a regular basis and talk about him improving to the point that he'll be above average down the road.

Gary Matthews was sub-par defensively in his own right...He made 22 errors in 3 seasons WITH the Phillies. A lifetime FPCT of .968 (thats an average of 9-10 errors in a full year. By contrast, good outfielders are usually around .985/990 FPCT, 4-5 errors per season). He was also a .281 hitter with the most "nervous" bat you've ever witnessed. I might be prone to dismiss some of his talk and stick to Walkers observation on Duncan. If Duncan can hit lefties, he'll put more runs on the board than he'll cost with his glove...he's already surpassed Matthews average power stats for a a year in a 1/2 season.

Barring the above, you can restart the thread focusing on Tuguchi (maybe his last year as a Card) Eckstein (trade bait or last year as a Card). Miles filling in for injuries (great utility player/pinch hitter). Who else...? Jaun Enc, Ludwick, Speez, etc?

Maybe the defense would be better/sharper playing up by a few runs rather than down by 5 or 6 in the second inning. Im a big "DEFENSE" guy.

I'm with you ...
this is one of the worst fielding teams in St. Louis in quite a while. And I've seen a few. Must be contagious, because Pujols is even having an off year with the leather.

I think bad fielding is contagious
inasmuch as the good defenders have to make up for the poor defenders--poor 2b and SS defense means more balls for the 1B to desperately try to dig out of the ground, for example.

Pujols miscues -
are probably a result of over-aggressiveness (some of those bad throws) ... trying to do too much to lift a struggling, dysfunctional team. I guess Rolen's been about his average level of gold standard, with a few lapses here and there. Miles/Eckstein - not too good. Taguchi hasn't been up to his previous standard of near-flawless flyhawking. Edmonds? Slow, and just not "with it" - by his standards. Encarnacion? No comment. Duncan ... uh, never mind. Let's change the subject.

The team's .979 fielding pct. is about as low as I've ever seen it. (not that the number tells all)
