Over at Bird Land, Derrick Goold had a q&a with Jeff Luhnow early this morning at around one a.m. You can question the picks they made, but you've got to hand it to Luhnow, he's definitely trying to connect with the fans.
I still disagree with not taking Porcello in the first round, but I understand the logic at least in the Kozma pick. Unfortunately, it still feels like a reach to me. I really would have preferred Porcello or Michael Main, a super high upside kind of HS arm. Personally, I also thought Joe Savery would have been a great value there, even with the health concerns.
He makes a good case for the Mortenson signing. I wasn't real impressed with this one either, felt like a big time reach, but there seems to be some extra circumstances here. Interesting read.
Out of the other picks, I love Kyle Russell. Great upside, could be a big time player. All the others they took, eh. Mostly low ceiling college arms. They seem to have an awful lot of those already. Oh well. I'm hoping for some more risk/reward type guys on day 2.
Regardless, it's definitely a worthwhile read. In spite of my own luke warm feelings on this particular group of players, I still think Luhnow is going to be great for the organisation.
