Wild Trade Ideas

Quick diary - Essentially - I think the Cards could use a trade or two (if not what else do we have talk about)...  The key position I see us in need of is...  SS...  I also don't see us giving B Anderson a fair shot given Yadi's recent performance... so my proposed trade is:

Bryan Anderson and Jason Isringhausen

to the Angels for:

Brandon Wood and Jeff Mathis

The Angels need a catcher and if we could package Yadi instead I'd go for that, but if I were them I would want Anderson.  Izzy could help the team in the playoffs (the alternative is use Izzy as a chip to pick up whatever else they want).

I'd be interested if anyone else has wild trade ideas (and yes I know Wood has been moved to 3B this year, but that is more a function of the Angels backlog at SS than his lack of ability to play there..).

By the way - has anyone seen what Cory Doyne is doing in AAA for the Os.... link...  http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?n=Cory%2520Doyne&pos=P&sid=milb& t=p_pbp&pid=449127

Izzy
He'd be a 7th inning guy for the Angels.  They are in desparate need of a C, but Anderson might be a bit young.  On that note though, I would guess Anderson is around #30 on the top 100 prospects in the Milb while Wood is around #15.  That said, I figure if you toss in Izzy you are nearly there (maybe not though).

In the offseason I was proposing Rolen straight up for Wood, but I don't the Angels would be interested in that now given Rolen's performance thus far...  Maybe he can turn it on and clear waivers in August...

Until Anderson figures out how to
stop giving up passed balls, he's a long way away.

by Big Red on Jun 30, 2007 7:47 PM EDT up reply actions

I hear ya, but...
The way I look at it is that every catcher is going to have a few pass balls over the course of the year (say,,,5 - Anderson looks like he will have between 15-20 - obviously a problem), BUT

Last I hear he was throwing out high 40%s in terms of base stealers, so if you add those free bases to normalize his stolen base ratio say he is at 20-25% - then we may not even mention the difference...

But I agree with you in the end - I just want to figure out some way to pry Brandon Wood from the Angels - they decrease his value by playing him at 3B...

by Lawless on Jun 30, 2007 8:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Honestly
I really don't think the Angels are craving Izzy. For a 7th inning guy and a catcher, they could give up a lot less.
On with the youth movement!

by aet15 on Jun 30, 2007 8:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed
I don't think they are craving Izzy, I think what they need is a catcher and possbily a power bat.  Another possibility would be Duncan in Izzy's place then try to ship Izzy to the Mets for Humber or a similar pitcher...

Through Izzy in b/c I don't think anyone would mind having that kind of weapon for the 7th inning...

A more plausible trade might be Izzy to the Yanks for Joba Chamberlian or Ian Kennedy...

I don't think people realize..
Bryan Anderson is not considered a great prospect.  None of the Cardinals, with the exception of Rasmus, are.  Brandon Wood is considered a much better prospect than Rasmus.

Everyone seems to believe that we have so many great players like Stavinoha, Anderson, Perez, you get the idea..

The Cardinals farm team is actually pretty weak -- well into the bottom half of the MLB.  Brandon Wood is probably the best prospect in one of the top three strongest organizations.  It's just not going to happen.

Top 100 in baseball
I'd wager that Anderson will easily make the top 100 prospects in baseball next year -- in baseball prospectus chats I have heard that he is about the same level as Rasmus and Rasmus is probably going to be around #20 next year...

I think the Cards are middle of the road in terms of prospects, but wouldn't agree with lower half --- They - probably - will have 4 top 100 prospects next year in Rasmus, Anderson, Garcia, and Perez, with the first 3 having a solid shot at top 50 status...

Just a disagreement in terms of the quality of the Cards farm club I guess...

its a top (kinda) heavy system
but anderson is quite a prospect

he's 20 and excelling in AA

by azruavatar on Jun 30, 2007 8:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Rasmus....
has eclipsed Brandon Wood.  Like Anderson, Rasmus skipped High A and is mashing in AA.  Colby is a legit Top 20 in all of baseball and will probably make some Top 10 if he keeps up the current pace.

by Brock20 on Jun 30, 2007 9:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Rasmus didn't skip High A
but he has eclipsed B. Wood as a prospect in my mind, although damn close.  I would say both are inside the top 20 in all of baseball.  I also agree that Colby will be top 10 at the end of the season.

B. Anderson is probably at around the 60th best prospect right now which is pretty impressive, but he really needs to work on his passed balls.

Also, I think it's a great idea to trade Izzy, more of because I think he's overachieving right now, but it would be better to ship him off to a team like the Tigers, Indians, or Yankees.  I also think it would be great if we could trade off Ryan Franklin but I don't see many teams paying as much for him although a lot cheaper.  I also don't think Franklin is as good as his ERA which is why I would trade him.

by bigboy1234 @ Viva El Birdos on Jun 30, 2007 11:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Overstatement...
on my part.  The thought was Rasmus would go back to High A this year, and he went to AA instead.  He's fast tracked, as this year was supposed to be a full year at High A.

by Brock20 on Jul 1, 2007 9:35 AM EDT up reply actions

He's a...
20 year-old catcher with a decent track record(4th-rounder, .300 in Low-A at 19) hitting well over .300 in Double-A. I can see he's special all on my own. Many said the same thing about Rasmus a while back, before he jumped into the top half of most prospect lists. I don't think Anderson will develop as much power as Rasmus can, and his legs won't contribute as much either. So I think by the time the major sites unveil their prospect lists Rasmus will have climbed into some top 15-20's and Anderson somewhere down at 50-70.

by mateodh on Jun 30, 2007 9:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Definately....
One thing I would differ slightly on is that I personally think Anderson will develop more power than people project right now.  I've seen him twice, this year and last and the guy is small and needs to fill out.  He hit some scoring gap doubles both times I saw him.

He's not going to be Colby, 25-25 potential, but he can probably drop 10-15 bombs a season.

by Brock20 on Jun 30, 2007 9:40 PM EDT up reply actions

No difference here...
I agree, 10-20 is fair to expect from Anderson as he matures.

Positional scarcity anyone?
Pujols currently < Career godliness.

by joker24 on Jul 1, 2007 3:43 PM EDT up reply actions

I believe positional scarcity...
makes a player stand out, but I don't think it should move him up on a prospect list. For one, there's no guarantee he'll stay there, it seems like he will but 12 passed balls is a lot. But mainly I just think a player should be evaluated on his talent and not relative to another person's position. The point could be made that the ability to play catcher is a skill in itself and that's true, but I don't buy that he should be ranked higher than a good OF prospect with similar offensive skills.

Say you have two pitchers with similar talent, but one is a lefty and the other is a righty. Now it's true that teams would rather have the lefty than the right, and that the lefty's performance is probably more valuable to a team because of the scarcity of good lefties, but I wouldn't put one ahead of the other because of external forces like that if we're evaluating his talent.

I'm not saying you're wrong, just that if I were rating prospects that's the way I'd do it.

Halos
The Angels would never trade the best shortstop and their former #1 pick who had a ton of potential (I think) for an older reliever and a fairly good - good catching prospect.  They already have Hank Conger, who's going to be a very good hitting catcher, anyway.  Plus they have K-Rod, and Scott Shields (I think?)

by KeepOnRolen on Jun 30, 2007 8:34 PM EDT reply actions

Wood
isn't a SS anymore, he plays 3rd base now.  Although if needed he could play SS.  But yeah the Angels wouldn't do this deal.  Like you mentioned they also have Hank Conger, who has more potential than Anderson.

btw
Sorry if I'm coming on to strong and sounding like a jerk.

by KeepOnRolen on Jun 30, 2007 8:34 PM EDT reply actions

Hey no worries
That's why I called it wild trade ideas.  I voted that the trade would be in the Cards favor.  Unfortuantely the Angels don't need much (catcher, maybeeee an established 3B like Rolen, maybeee a power 1B like Duncan).

I just REALLY like Wood for an impact SS.  When I look in the minors for someone who fits that profile and could be had the only other guy that I can think of is Adam Jones in Seattle and he hasn't played SS for the last year and a half (I'd try to get him too..)

As for Hank Conger, good point, I'd say his odds of sticking at C are below that of Anderson and obviously Anderson putting up very good numbers in AA is worth alot more than OK low A numbers...

Again - my feel is Anderson is around 30 overall and Wood around 15...  Maybe I am off base, I'm just a bit worried about Anderson not getting a "real" chance with Yadi behind the plate.

by Lawless on Jun 30, 2007 8:40 PM EDT up reply actions

The Angels...
are notorious for not dealing prospects away.  In fact, they seem to hold them till they have little to no value.  See Jeff DaVanon.

I think the best trading partners for the Cards, if we are moving Izzy are the Indians and the Tigers.  Both need closers, and both are out of our division.  I would move Izzy to the Indians for Andy Marte, which allows Rolen to be moved elsewhere.

Earlier I had suggested to the Dodgers, but that was for Loney, Billingsley, Broxton, or actually 2 of the three.  But now Loney is up and playing first and Billingsley is in the rotation, so that would be hard to accomplish.

Though if they got Rolen, the Dodgers could move Nomah back to first base.

by Brock20 on Jun 30, 2007 9:29 PM EDT reply actions

Any combination of...
Loney, Billingsley, and Broxy for Izzy is something Ned Coletti would scoff at.  And I really don't think there's any way to make that offer more attractive to him without including a real player in there somewhere.

by mynameistyler on Jun 30, 2007 11:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Rolen Not Izzy
The Dodgers could have a use for Izzy, maybe a Rolen and Izzy combo. But until the Cards decide they are truly out of it, all trades are going to be of the Maroth variety to keep hope of an Astros-like run.
When I open my eyes this whole season will be a dream...

by gforce on Jul 1, 2007 1:05 AM EDT up reply actions

That was my idea two weeks ago....
The Dodgers were down on Loney, who had moped after being demoted to AAA to start the year.  They were too enamored with Nomah, after spending too much money on him.  Loney was really a man without playing time until a week ago.  Since then, he's been playing like a man possessed.

Billingsley's situation was very similar to Reyes, in that he also fell out of favor with management.  He was banished to the bullpen after struggling.

Broxton was probably a reach, as he's still in favor. My first stop in looking at trading partners is need.  Then I look for players that are blocked or are out of favor with management on those teams.  That's how I hit on Marte and the above.

by Brock20 on Jul 1, 2007 11:59 AM EDT up reply actions

I'm a little
Late on the trigger here, but it seems as though the Indians have went unnoticed as trade candidates.  They're poised for a post season run and have a really great team with a pretty shabby bullpen.  They also have a pretty solid farm system.   One player they might target is a 21 year old shortstop in double A named asdrubal cabrera.  All he's done his season is put up a .326/407/.487 line that includes 21 stolen bases for the switch hitter.   He hasn't put up those numbers prior to this year, and isn't fairly well known yet.  With the indians having other SS candidates in their system and the true ability to make a post season run, a combo of Izzy, springer, someone else almost makes sense for both teams.
