Lucky # 13

After everything else that happened in tonight's game (good and bad), I looked over at my fiance and said time for 13's first home run. Her favorite number is 13, and we are big on our numbers.

Star-divide

Not that I can claim anything, but boy did I jump out of my chair when that ball cleared the fence. Congrants Ryan!!!

What are some of everyone's favorite numbers?

No argument there
On a funny note my favorite has always been #9. More for football than baseball (Jim McMahon, SB Shuffle), but then we added our two favorites together. Eck is a nice pick but I'm not sure he'll be wearing our uniform next year.
When I open my eyes this whole season will be a dream...

I
had my best high school season as #35. And then I changed for whatever reason, and it all went downhill . . .

I've used 35 for all sports ever since.

On with the youth movement!

16
it's a shame that nobody but me whined about sanders and duncan immediately wearing 16 after lankford left, but everyone got all over bud smith for taking a worse player's number.

by DanUpBaby on Jun 27, 2007 12:11 AM EDT reply actions

He refers to Willie McGee
Bud Smith briefly wore #51.

And what's up, DanUp, how come no vile spewn upon Troy Cate or new acquisition Mike Maroth for donning your cherished  #46?

by liam on Jun 27, 2007 1:40 AM EDT up reply actions

And to answer the question
I always wore #2 on my hockey jerseys, but one season the deuce was already claimed. I took #13 for that year.

My favorite number is e, though.

They fulfill the terms of the number 46
They have no stuff, and they throw it around the plate. Simontacchi would be proud, were he with us today instead of toiling in obscurity in our nation's capital.

by DanUpBaby on Jun 27, 2007 4:40 AM EDT up reply actions

I agreed with you
Lankford never got the credit he deserved in St. Louis.  9th in career games in STL, 10th in plate appearances, 8th in runs, 9th in total bases, 8th in doubles, 5th in homers (3rd at the time he left), 8th in RBI, 4th in walks, 8th in steals, 6th in XBH, and he was always a good defensive outfielder.  A very good CF before a shoulder injury forced him to left...

by whopperman on Jun 27, 2007 2:35 AM EDT up reply actions

16 for me too
I grew up with Lankford and Hull and have worn that number ever since.

by Tarheel85 on Jun 27, 2007 4:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Im a 13 fan too
and i said this about our kid Ryan tonight.
Get used to him becuase he has the hustle of Eck and the flambouyently heterosexualness of Jimmy Ballgame. Its a Pitt-Jollie thing.

The Atomic Number for me, Al
13.
This is like 1988, only without Jim Lindeman. Could we get Jim Lindeman, please?

My number is
47,000,000 which isn't very helpful in choosing a favorite baseball player, or gambling.

Multiples
My favorite number is 7 and every multiple thereof.

by mynameistyler on Jun 27, 2007 5:46 AM EDT reply actions

mine is...
for the cardinals, it is the number 5 as my name shows, but overall, i am a fan of the number 33, because of kareem first, and many others later, bird, shaq(in miami), walker while he was here
Pujols is the greatest Cardinal in my lifetime.

by bigcardsfan5 on Jun 27, 2007 6:15 AM EDT reply actions

actually
I've always been a #13 guy.  but didn't Kerry Robinson wear it at one point?  and er, Billy Wagner...

but it's the number I would always choose.  good thing I haven't been asked to put on a uniform of any type since I was in little league.

Acquire some runs!

by madding on Jun 27, 2007 6:41 AM EDT reply actions

Kerry Robinson
He wore #13 in 2001 and 2002, then had to give it up to Jeff Fassero. He changed to #0 after that. Then to a Portland Beavers jersey the following year.

I absolutely destest odd numbers.  Something about the lack of symmetry bothers me.  On top of that, I prefer perfect squares amoung all the even numbers.

by azruavatar on Jun 27, 2007 8:58 AM EDT reply actions

LOL
maybe you should see a shrink about that odd number thing...only kidding

by nybirdfan on Jun 27, 2007 9:23 AM EDT up reply actions

the meds help
but if I ever see the number 7, I usually lose control of my bowels as I run away in terror.

(the reason I hate odd numbers is the effect that an odd number of people have on social settings.  that has gradually spread into me disliking odd numbers on the whole for their lack of symmetry and elegance.  even numbers are just so much more complete, imo.  no I'm not actually crazy, I'm in a math intensive field and am just geeked up enough to think about things like this.)

by azruavatar on Jun 27, 2007 9:34 AM EDT up reply actions

Hmm, I like odd numbers
In our (Indian/ Persian) culture they are supposed to be good luck.  For example when giving a monetary gift we would give $51 in stead of $50.

My favorite combination of numbers are pythagorean triples like:

3, 4, 5
5, 12, 13
100,000;  2,499,999,999; 2,500,000,001
or
1,425,438,846,754,932,240; 1,425,438,846,754,932,241; 2,015,874,949,414,289,041

Now that, my friend, is GEEKY.

72
It's not my birth year ('73) & it's not for anyone that ever played for the Cardinals. Actually, I played catcher for a slow-pitch softball team (tells you how much talent I had) and we had numbered t-shirts done up. I wasn't thin by any stretch of the imagination and somebody called me Pudge, so I picked Carlton Fisk's number just to play it off. I know he's certainly somebody worth emulating, plus he had a rarely used number, so I've stuck with it.

I'll go with
11.  It just looks nice on a uniform.

by jillsinmo on Jun 27, 2007 10:10 AM EDT reply actions

Love the number 3...
and the Cardinals that have worn it the last fifteen years (except P-Dub)

Brian Jordan, Edgar Renteria and Abraham Nunez...not a bad list.

I have been #9 since I was a little tike.  It didnt matter what sport either; baseball, football, basketball....anything.  The first "small fry" (after t-ball but before little league" season I ever played they were handing out shirts and I was the ninth kid in line.  Ever since then #9 has been tearing it up (though now I play softball).

7 and 31
My birthday's on the 7th, so that's always been a favorite.  When I moved up to Sr. High football, I was slated as a fullback and wanted OJ's #.  A junior-to-be already had 32, so I took 31.  Funny part was, I played in, maybe, 2-3 games at fullback but started all three years on D (linebacker, then end) so I got switched to 53 (until the last two games of my Sr. year when I went back to 31 so I could be at (blocking) tight end).

Favorite Cardinal numbers are 1,5,6,20,31,45

by ArkansasTravs on Jun 27, 2007 11:37 AM EDT reply actions

20...
because its my birthday.

Anybody else remember numbers based on jerseys?  For example, if I check into a hotel and I get room 1503, I'll say I'm in Edmonds/Edgar to remember the room number.

The wife thinks I'm nuts, but she's picked it up as a safety thing.  A couple of times we've been in Vegas and she'll want to call it a night and she won't remember the hotel room number so, I can say it to her without people hearing it.

First time she tried it, we had mixed results.  we had room 933, which being from Boston is no a brainer:  Ted Williams/Larry Bird.  So, I kept saying to her Ted Larry.  She comes back about a half hour later and tells me that she got off on 6 and there is a very confused elderly gentleman in 633 wondering why she was trying to get into his room.

Oldie but a goodie
How about 1908.  I use that as the password to a fantasy league I set up every year that includes a few Cub fans.

Well...
I kind of like #0, on account I use that number in little league
