Longest games you've attended

Thought it might be fun to share some stories of the  extra inning or just plain old long games we've personally attended. The inspiration to start this diary was from Wednesday's game thread which fell into that conversation.

Anyway, I went to a game last year (my first at the new Busch) against the Dodgers which lasted 15 innings and Pujols won it with a walk-off home run. The length of the game was increased when there was a brief rain delay. It was a unique experience because I sat by a nice family from California on vacation to see their cardinals play. That's right, they weren't dodger fans! It was fun to hear their perspective of the game, especially the father, he said in the ninth inning with the game still tied "I hope this game goes all night." And I understood because coming from the west coast, he wasn't all that tired yet.

Another shorter game was in Phoenix to see my second favorite team the D-Backs face the Yankees (I believe two or three years ago) the game went into the 13 in which the D-Backs won with a walk off home run from Juan Brito. However, while the game ended at midnight, it was more like 2 in the morning central, so being from Illinois, I was tired. But it was all worth it because I got to meet Gonzo before the game :]

I don't remember...
...the longest MLB game I've been at.  I know I went to a 13-inning game back in 1998 and a 12-inning one before that, but the people I was with (read: before I had a car) insisted on leaving early.

I saw a 16-inning college game last month in the D-II NCAA tournament.

The two longest pro games I've stayed for all of were in Memphis.

  • They lost 15-3 in 12 innings to Edmonton once, proving that you can't give a team 7 outs in an inning.  Cody McKay ended up finishing that game.
  • And last year, they won something like 4-3 in 16.  They gave up a run in the top of the 16th and we were all happy this was about to end.  Then Mike Rose hit a solo homer in the bottom of the inning and we were all angry this would go on further.  Then Bo Hart hit the next pitch into the bullpen to mercifully end it.

My longest game...
was this game which I attended last year in Los Angeles. I went with an Angels fan who has never left a game early in his 50+ years of being a baseball fan and a Dodgers fan who had never stayed for a whole game (as is typical of Dodgers fans).

After much arm-twisting and complaining, the Dodgers fan finally persuaded us to leave after the bottom of the 15th. As we were making our way to the exit, Derek Lowe got three quick ground ball outs and we convinced the Dodgers fan to stay for the bottom half of the 16th, since it would be a shame to hear the stadium react to a walk-off win while we were in the parking lot. He reluctantly agreed.

Our very own Ryan Franklin came on to face Ramon Martinez, who promptly deposited his first pitch into the left field bleachers. Game over, man. Time for the long drive back to Bakersfield.

Amazingly, this was the first extra-innings game I've ever attended.

August 7, 2000
Not the longest game, but the most fun long game I've attended was a random monday nighter against the Marlins during the dog days of the 2000 season. Ankiel started and pitched alright but had to leave after the 5th due to a high pitch count. The game was tied at 1-1 after 8 when the scary green clouds moved in.

My brother and I stuck it out through the 2 hour 14 minute rain delay moving around from section to section as the stadium emptied out. They had the All-Century team video playing on the Jumbotron  for the latter half of the delay (memo to the Cardinals: provide your fans with something to watch during rain delays!).

Most people were gone by the time play resumed (around midnight) and the remaining 1000 or so fans all moved down to the field boxes. The atmosphere was like a high school game - fans could yell stuff that the players and umpires could hear. Every called ball/strike that went against the Cardinals was jeered. Henry Rodriguez was given the "HEN-REEEE" treatment when at the plate. When newly acquired Will Clark stepped into the on deck circle, many fans offered him their support and appreciation.

This went on for 3 innings until J.D. Drew drove in Eric Davis on a base hit to left that Henry Rodriguez didn't field cleanly. 3:36 game + 2:14 delay = 4:50 total (7:10-1:00am).

Shortest Game
I don't remember my longest game (no extra innings in my memory), but last year I saw Jamie Moyer pitch a CG SHO in 2 hours.

13 innings. Ended with a Pujols walk-off homer. It was my 30th birthday and my mom and I drove up from Arkansas. She was disappointed because she thought she wouldn't get to see Mike Matheny (as it was a day game after a night game) or Bo Hart (remember him? ;o)). But, with the extra innings, she got to see both. Even though the Cards were just a few days from being eliminated from the postseason that year, it was a great game and one of my best memories. I remember the talk around town was whether or not to root for the Cubs if they made it to the playoffs.

Wednesday night only 2nd longest
I was there for the Wednesday nighter, and it was my second longest day at the ballpark.  I went to a doubleheader one time and the second game went like 11 or 12 innings, giving me a 20+ inning day at the ballpark.  That was interesting.

I managed
to be at both the Blues' 3OT loss to the Red Wings in the 2nd round of the playoffs (which I think was in 96) and the Rams' 2OT loss to the Carolina Panthers, also in the 2nd round of the playoffs, in 2003....

Two games come to mind....
Summer of 2000, specifically August 12, my friend and I went to County Stadium and baked through a 12 inning, four hour plus game the Cards finally won 2-1.  It was probably over 100 that day and just brutal.

Notable in that game: Will Clark has just been acquired a couple weeks earlier and drew a bases loaded walk for the go ahead run in the 12th.  THANKS RETROSHEET FOR CONFIRMING THAT!!

I couldn't find this one on Retrosheet, because I don't remember the year.  But when I was somewhere between 5th and 8th grade, which would mean, somewhere between 1988-1991, the Cards played I believe the Expos in a late season game that had a tremendous rain delay of almost two hours.  When the game was resumed, there was almost no one in the stadium so foul balls up to three sections away were reachable for us.  Plus, there was so much standing water in the stadium that it was like running through a creek to get to them.

My Dad got six tickets to that game, so my brother and I were both able to take a friend.  To this day, all four of us talk about that game and how much fun it was.

None of us got a ball though.

I've Been to a few
-July 3, 2006- Indianapolis Indians vs Charolette Knights(AAA). It went 16 innings and lasted about 5 1/2 hours. The Indians won 12-11 on a walk-off homerun by a guy we now know well...Jose Bautista.

-July 19, 2006- IND Indians vs LOU Bats(AAA). 4 hours, 13 innings, total= 29 runs

that was july 13 of last year
my brother went to that game
That's what she said

by kyle man on Jun 23, 2007 8:54 AM EDT up reply actions

yea
I went to the 14 inning game where pujols walked off too.  I was kinda sick and wanted to go, but my friend kept saying "we can't leave now, pujols is gonna bat soon" or "We can't leave now, JD is comin up to bat" (He is friends with JD). It was worth it.
I also remember drivin back from KC (in '02 i think) and listening to the cardinals game with my friend on the car ride.  we left KC in the 8th inning and got back to his apartment in columbia in about the 20th inning.  every time he would come up to bat, Al said that Vina was gonna win it for us because he was due (he was like 0-9 in his first 9 at bats).  eventually, 22nd inning or so i think (i should look it up for sure), sure enough, vina wins it for us.  it made the drive fly by.

sorry
it was in '03, and it only went 20 innings.  either way, vina ended up going 1-10 with the game winner.  i think this was when pujols had the hurt arm and couldn't throw.
here's the box

Steve Kline got the win, Carl Pavano the loss.

wow
we had 4 triples in that game.  and Instant Breakfast went 1-9 against us, and Looper threw 2 scoreless innings.
looking back at old games is fun.

Heard this one on the internet feed
I was living in Vermont at the time.  My apartment was REALLY clean because I wouldn't leave for fear of missing something exciting and I had some nervous energy to spare.

So, I wasn't actually at the game, but this is the longest game that I've stuck with from beginning to end.
