Game 63 Open Thread: June 14, 2007, 7:10 CDT

elarton

wells

2-2, 7.34

2-10, 6.33

lord a-mighty, look at those eras; kip wells has a full one-run advantage over his opponent tonight. wells had a couple of quasi-encouraging outings in late may, walking just one man in each of his last two starts that month, but so far in june he's walked 8 guys in 10 innings and has thrown fewer than 60 percent of his pitches for strikes. here's a mildly interesting split:

avg obp slg pa / hr
pitches 1-75 .247 .325 .426 32
pitches 76+ .366 .447 .620 18

the split very well might be random, but insofar as wells only threw 44 innings last season it's not that far-fetched to theorize that he still lacks stamina; maybe they should get the guy out of there after the 5th inning for a few starts. . . . . another idea about wells: i'd like to see him rely more heavily on his fastball. he throws his 4-seam 92-94 consistently with movement, and his sinker in the high 80s with movement; it's no big deal if he fails to locate either pitch with great precision, because i don't think batters can square those pitches up even if they're on the fat ot the plate. still not quite caught up on my pitch-charts for wells, but my gut instinct is that he's getting hurt on his off-speed pitches more so than on his fastballs.

about relying too much on breaking pitches
i find this to be true with most of the pitching staff. i am just paranoid or is this part of the overall laduncan strategy--throw a lot of junk (not that carp or wainwright or even tj have junk curveballs. you know what i mean).

I have a concern about Wainwright last night
and basically all year.  He is still 'overthrowing' pitches.  Mostly his fastball.  I don't know if he gets too hyped up or what, but he was throwing some 55 foot 91mph fastballs last night or throwing them above the catchers head on numerous occasions.

Anyone else notice this?

I think Kip is just concerned for the Royals health. Given how so many are on the DL, he is just going to walk them so they don't get hurt. That Kip is a swell guy.

Something funny
So I am in class tonight in KC in a Career Development Class (I am in grad school to become a Marriage and Family Therapist).

My instructor, who used to be a High School Guidance Counselor in the area, just related a story about young latin student who barely spoke english who came into his office. The counselor asked him what he wanted to do with his life. The boy said he wanted to play professional ball. The counselor told him he didn't think he could do that.

That boy is Albert. Can you imagine telling Albert not to play ball? Glad Albert didn't listen to him. Instructors says it was his biggest mistake.

Today I picked up Yovani Gallardo for my team. A big Brewers fan in the league is trying to trade Matt Cain for him. Cain's a good pitcher on a subpar team with bad luck. (Can't get a decision, also known as the Anthony Reyes syndrome.)

Didn't say anything for almost three whole pitches.  Then Al asked Dan if they were getting Lunch or Breakfast in Oakland to which Dan not only did not respond, but then neither of them said anything for another 10 seconds.  Also Dan said Larue struck out back in the second inning, which also happens to be the inning that we are still in.  And, AND, I have already heard Al say, "No one feels worse about dropping that ball in yesterdays game than Miles."  These guys should get on the bus with Kip Wells to wherever he is going.   Although I fear that bus may be going back to the mound in 5 days.  Hell at this point we might as well give Al the damn ball.  Which would Al suck at more, broadcasting or pitching at this point?

Oh......
I have said it before they sent the wrong guy down.  Wells needs so much more work on pitching than Reyes ever did. Alas, he's a veteran, and that's what they like...I have read, but am unable to confirm, that the Brewers called up their stud prospect, Yovani Gallardo (spelling?) to take Capuano's place while he's on the DL.  You know, the same Gallardo that some AAA kid named Reyes beat out in a pitcher's duel a few days ago.  No Ohka.  No more pitchers to "fix"  I don't want anyone else's reclamation project this year.  Go ahead and put Franklin in the starting rotation, he's at least started in the past, see what he might be able to do.....

the cardinals are 3-0 when he starts. he may not be a qualified MLB starting pitcher, but he has done his best at pretending to be one (not counting the 3rd inning meltdown against the reds). when wells starts, it's an automatic loss. this rotation is just plain horrible, though -- a complete joke.

Lou pulled his starter today after giving up a 2nd hit.  Of couse that wasn't until he also walked two, plunked another, and gave back a 3 run lead.

Tony lets his starter give up three hits, four walks, and one plunked, while giving back a 3 run lead.

Maybe
Wells can have a phantom knee injury too.

by ajo080s on Jun 14, 2007 10:19 PM EDT up reply actions

It's clear that the leg injury is more than
advertised.  He has lost what little power he had to begin the season (or in the middle of the early season, if you will).  His range is hampered by the injury as well.

We don't have anything to replace him, I know, but I think he is the player (other than Izzy) that we can get the most for.

Oh, and in other news, Pujols hasn't driven a ball well since injuring his leg on Speezer's errant throw on Sunday.  Just great!

I'm not giving up yet
He's shown definite signs for optimism the past couple of weeks, and his avg. has increased quite a bit (I know it's not saying much, but still).

I'll still argue that I think we'll be able to get a lot for proven relief. If you look at trades in the past, you'll notice that relievers with Ryan Franklin type numbers can bring in a lot more than you'd think.

Plus, we're in the NL central. If we drop Wells, and Reyes pitches anything like he's capable of, that's going to make quite the difference in its own. Then once Carp and Mulder come back . . .

There's no reason to panic yet. We just need to make one move at a time, and that move for now is to DFA Wells.

On with the youth movement!

i wouldn't call it attacking Jimmy
he was calm, but deff mad. Tony said at 3rd with Jimmy & Barry "that was not the time to pin him down and ask him what's wrong, and now's not the time to pin him down, I'll do that tomorrow when I talk to him." then fsn ended the interview.

it's not the first time they've butted heads. just yesterday in fact Jimmy said this about not starting "Anything I say is just going to get me in trouble"

and Tony in response said, "He hasn't hit well (.162) against lefthanders. He's still got some aches and pains. We're playing nine in a row. I'd hate like hell for him to play today and miss a better matchup for him. He's been here since 2000 and there's been days he wanted to play where I didn't think that was a good thing. And we still talked the next day."

so who knowns what's going on with these two. i think they both need to stop this crap. it's not good for the Cards for them to be playing stupid macho head games in the media.

Pythagoras shakes his head, sadly
After tonight, the Cardinals have scored 258 runs, and allowed 332. At -74, we are officially the puniest team in the majors.

We're on pace to score 663 and allow 853. That projects to a 62-100 record this season.

Cards should have won atleast 2 of those games.  He is worse than Marquis ever was.

Even though, he didn't replace Marquis...Looper did.

a game like this
just what do u say after a game like this? yes i agree with everybody here, wells SHOULD be dfa'd right now, but for some reason i just wouldnt be surprised if that doesnt happen

at this point, how could reyes possibly be any worse? i dont think it is possible

i also would like to see jimenez sent out, but who should replace him? dove and falkenborg have both been up and failed already, i dont think percival will be ready for at least a week or more, so what does that leave, should they try perez now? he couldnt be any worse

i have to say as well, a game like this makes it so hard to have any good feelings about the team, the offense did ok, but how often do u face elarton?

how sad is it to think that marquis, simontacchi, woody, even ponson could possibly all right now make our starting rotation better?

Pujols is the greatest Cardinal in my lifetime.
