Z melts down

After a five-run inning where the Northsiders proved (once again) that they're Still The Cubs, Carlos Zambrano blew up in the dugout, sccording to this story.

The Braves had already scored runs when the Cubs were unable to catch routine pop-ups... twice!

I'm mildly surprised Sweet Lou didn't just hand Z a bat and his permission to "kill 'em all"...

it's starting to look like
failing to nail down a long-term contract with Zambrano before the season was the only good move Hendry made.
Don't Panic!!!

Barrett
Hopefully they'll trade Barrett so that he can quit abusing us.

And I'll take Big Z in a second.

Thought about a trade...
when I saw this on TV this afternoon.

What if...

Barrett for Isringhausen

OR

Zambrano for Rolen (or???)

Hmm, this should create some WILD trade interest in one or the other.

The Cubs have A-Ram and Lee
I don't think that they'd want Rolen.  If they were really trading Zambrano, I think they'd be gunning for A-Rod to play short, or something like that.  They certainly have the prospects behind Z to do that.

Zambrano
is--and probably always will be--a head case. He'll never match his potential.

...and
Barrett is the WORST defensive catcher I've ever seen. His hitting doesn't even begin to make up for his defensive liabilities. I wouldn't want either one of them near a BOB uni. Pass.

Big Z
By the looks of this its a mechanical issue for Zambrano. He has been awful so far this year. His K rate is down, BB rate is up, and his GB% is also down which is really bad since he relies so much on his hard sinker. If its simply an arm slot/mechanical issue, then no wonder pitching wiz Rothschild either hasn't picked up on it or can't fix it. It's sad really, Rothschild has now had three of the best young arms of this early century, and failed to spot issues with them. I have no idea why Piniella retained him. I actually would really like to have Zambrano with the BOB, like someone said earlier, I don't think it's as much a temper as it is a fiery passion for the game (today doesn't help that case though). He would seem like a perfect candidate for the Cards with his high GB rate, but the Cards don't have the resources and the Cubs have no reason to deal him to us. But he would be worth a large free agent deal in my opinion, if we KNOW we can fix his mechanical issues. Only red flag is the piles of Pitcher Abuse Points he racked up under the Cubs regime. But Duncan and LaRussa have always been good about keeping their abuse points low and Zambrano just seems like a logical fit to me...at some point.

1000 Chicago
reported that Barrett had to go to the hospital. Two black eyes and a split lip. As Brandt would say: "That's marvelous."
Everybody off the bandwagon!

Zambrano
It's pretty obvious at this point that the Cubs would have to blow him away with an offer to keep him. That means the Cubs are likely to try to trade him, but they'd be leery about sending him to a divisional foe like us. I'm not sure we have the assets to force them to change their mind, so I fully expect him to go elsewhere by the end of the year.
