Game 42 Open Thread: May 22, 2007

duke

wagonmaker

1-4, 5.19

3-3, 6.34

after a couple of disastrous starts in mid-april, zach duke appears to have turned things around: he's got a 2.87 era over his last 5 starts. but maybe he's only been lucky; during that supposedly good stretch, opponents are hitting .301 off him and slugging .455. the cardinals faced him 4 times last season and batted a cumulative .340 against him, but they only hit one homer and split the 4 games.

they'd best win tonight, because in the next two games they'll face the national league's third- and eighth-best pitchers in era --- tom gorzelanny and ian snell. here's the lineup, per bernie:

eckstein ss
duncan lf
pujols 1b
encarnacion rf
rolen 3b
molina c
edmonds cf
miles 2b
wagonmaker p

encarnacion is a career 7 for 13 against duke, and rolen is 4 for 6. nobody in tonight's starting lineup has ever homered against duke.

Maybe Eck will have a nice chip on his shoulder about getting moved down in the lineup.  Hopefully, he will take this opportunity of being moved back to leadoff spot to get hot.

Opponents...
are hitting 488/511/780 against Duke in the first inning.

The Cardinals are hitting 196/261/245 in the first inning.

Something's got to give.

Bold prediction: The King of Infield Hits will hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the first to cut the Bucs lead to 6-3.

1997
Last time Jim Edmonds batted 7th in the regular season was September 6, 1997.  He went 1 for 4 with a HR and an RBI off of Brian Moehler.

Juan Encarnacion played for the Tigers in that game and went 1 for 1 with 2 BB, 1 HR and 2 RBI..oddly enough.

Sounds like a good omen to me.

We aren't very good.

There is no way that I will believe that Wainwright is healthy. The discrepancy between his stuff last year and this year is just too great. I think that we're running him out there because some genius thinks it's not "serious," and since our rotation is picked to the bone as it is. I just hope it doesn't end up causing lasting damage or something.

If somebody told me
I could have Edmonds or Jeter, knowing full well how their careers would play out, as rookies, I'd take Edmonds. But I realize that the BBWAA would think differently.

I remember the catch in game 7. I can never get pissed at Jim no matter what he does.

by saladdin69 on May 22, 2007 9:50 PM EDT up reply actions

"how their careers would play out"
jeter's career has included four world series championships.

but i get your point.

i was just going to say that i'd probably take jeter, as much as i hate the guy.

then i checked their warp3s on BP. i was astonished.

jeter: 103 warp3 in 1,721 games
jed:   105.4 warp3 in 1,732 games

scary - almost identical.

granted, jeter looks like he's got a lot more left in the tank at this point - BP has him as a 4+ win player through at least the 2011 season, when he'll be 37. but if both guys retired tomorrow, jeter would be a first-ballot HOFer, and jed would be at least an underdog, if not a long shot.

Well i did my review of oiur A's game now to our SFgame. It is a great park, and we had great seats. Got hteir early again and went to bp. I got nervous of how it would go when liek 5 min to gates opening my daughter filled her pants. Shes 9 months old and I wanted to have her with me to get some autographs. I went down byt the stros dugout. For some reason visiting teams always seem to sign more. I went and stood by some cool local guys.

We explained that we were visiting from WA but my wife grew up in h-town. Hunter pence came ove rand we got his auto. By this time my wife rejoined with the baby. one guys starts yelling o players hey their from hosuton and they got their baby would you sign? Lidge said no caus ehe had to do therapy(physical)guess he got hurt night b4. Garner came over afterseeing my daughter and signed.

All in all we got Hunter Pence,Palemro,Loretta,Phil G,and Matt Albers...I got screwed out of jason lane when i gave my spot to a girl he went to high school with i said hey just take care of me and well she didnt everyone but me got his auto.

Was a greatpark, they all taunted C Lee, and he played it up as they chanted carlos sucks...waiving his arms like saying louder louder as he laughed..very cool of him. oh and we think my duaghter may have been on FSN cause she got on camera but it nevercame on the stadium cam...
