Cards Pick Up Wellemeyer

The Royals waived ex-Cub Todd Wellmeyer. the Cards picked him up. his ERA this season is 10.34. for his career, his ERA is 5.65, with 155 SO and 122 BB in 178+ IP.

it likely means that Falkenbourg is gone. he's out of options.

why falkenborg?
why would he be gone? you still got jimenez i think. he has options left. you can send him to tirple A and keep falkenborg. if jimenez is still in the majors because i dont know if he is.

this might be one reason . . .
Flakenborg: 10.80 ERA, 3BB, 1K
Jimenez:2.70 ERA, 3 BB, 6K
On with the youth movement!

But
wouldn't the best course of action be to try to keep as many chips in your pile? Falkenborg is/was the save leader in AAA. Somebody will want him. We could use him as part of a deal to get somebody. It would be foolish to just let him go.

Oh, I agree
I always hate seeing us just "let players go." Maybe we will be able to trade him. Who knows? But I DO think we should keep Jimenez up here.

I think...
what they're saying is that they like Jimenez and Wellemeyer better than Falk.

I wouldn't be so sure that there is a team right now who would want him on their 25 man roster.

Jimenez...
seems superior to Falkenborg so far... Too many walks for Falk.

As for Wellemeyer, I imagine he'll need to produce right away or they'll move on to someone else.

Since I live
in a nest of Cubbiedom, I always see almost as many Cub games as Cardinal games--and the only thing I recall about Wellemeyer is that it made me very happy whenever he got the nod: it meant the Cubs were probably going to lose (unless they were playing The Birds--then he seemed pretty good). On the other hand, I also thought the Weaver pick-up was a waste of time and that Looper couldn't possibly make it as a starter. After 40+ years, I still don't know shit from shinola. God, I love this game. Wellemeyer could be this year's Weaver or this year's Ponson--won't know till Dunc gets a chance at him. Less risk anyway since he'll be a pen guy. But man, that dude blew many a game in late innings for the blueboys. We'll see.

Has Falkenborg...
ever been outrighted before? He might get through waivers...

The alleged appeal of Wellmeyer
I posted this in last night's game thread, but I find it so interesting that I'm posting it again.

The Cards are 5 for 29 off Wellmeyer in his career.  He sounds like one of those guys who TLR and/or DD like because he's looked impressive when they've seen him. The problem is that he's not especially impressive against most everyone else.

just a shot
I have no problem giving Wellmeyer a look even if that means placing Falkenborg on waivers (which I fully expect him to clear).  In 28 ML games, he has a 6.46 ERA, 19 bb v. 29 SO., 1.74 whip, and .305 BAA.  The ERA and oponnents batting average really stick out, especially for a reliever.  Granted, its a small sample but Falkenborg was given a shot and is now being passed by other relief arms in the organization.  Plus, we more relievers on the horizon internally so the guy is expendable.  TLR and Dunc have been looking for a power arm ergo the facination with Wellmeyer (and Dove before him).  One of these guys will pan out eventually.

Wellmeyer was hated by the royals fans
so why should we like him?
