VEB glossary of terms

Okay boys and girls, here it is: The unofficial Viva El Birdos glossary of terms. nycbirdo offered to keep track of the phrases we've made up along the way, so here's the place to post them. If you can, try to provide applicable links to the origins of the nicknames. (Hint: if you can't remember, typing "nickname + vivaelbirdos" into google seems to work.)

Some of this will surely overlap with this post about the meanings of players' names, but let's not stop there. At the very least this will be a nice distraction until the offense starts playing consistently again.

Update [2007-5-17 10:36:59 by lboros]: thanks for getting this started, e.f. i'm gonna keep the diary active for a while, and then eventually i'll make it a permanent page (under the "Why El Birdos," as suggested) with an active comments section, so that it can be updated.

Two Larryisms
that might throw off your average bear coming to the site for the first time...
  1. viz., as in vis-a-vis
  2. the mysterious and distinctive wonder of that three dash emmmmmm dash

by jfs on May 16, 2007 9:31 AM EDT   0 recs

that's not right
viz. is an abbreviation for the Latin "videlicet," meaning "that is to say" or "namely."  It's an intensifier or highlighter, and does not mean at all the same thing as vis-a-vis, which means "compared to" (literally, "face-to-face").

Sorry
Thanks for the correction!

Bi-polar Betty & Sophie
Here is the comment regarding the origin of two of the bigger names on VEB.

I don't know if I'll try to update that anytime soon. It was just a wild thought that sprung up unsolicited.

Thanks!
That was classic.  I'm pretty sure I get the Sno' Cones thing, [wasn't that about serving snow cones in hell when Gary Bennett hit the grand slam against the Cubs last August?] but what is "Shave the poodle"?

Found the reference
Here it is. I think a lot of us were a bit punchy back then.

Shave the poodle!
Silly me, I thought this was a stretch-run call for Aaron Miles to cut his god-awful mullet last year.

Well, if it wasn't it should have been.

was it AlxFitz....
... who wrote that long dialogue last year when the Cards were sucking?

ah, yes it was, and i found it. i think some of the nicknames came from this, or at least use in it:

http://www.insidestl.com/stlsports/index.php?storyid=399

my wife came up with "The Loneliest Number" for JuanEnc, which gained some minor usage.

by kindred on May 16, 2007 2:53 PM EDT   0 recs

Thank god I'm not in a cubicle....
I think I may have even snorted over that one.  I was in the same hotel as the team when they started the NLDS in San Diego last year.  Let's just say that wasn't too far off on TJ and Lil' Dunc.

I'm new here, so this hasn't made the rounds yet...but in my house we call Miles, "Evil Eckstein" after all those old TV shows and soap operas where the good one was blond and the evil one had dark hair (think Bewitched and I Dream of Jeannie).

And, cardsgirl95, it was unintentional that I have a similar screen name.  I've never been original.  ;o)

That's okay
Cardsgirl isn't exactly breaking new ground in originality anyway.  We are free to share the name in dedication to our beloved Birds.

I remember that
Still makes me laugh.  The only thing I don't like looking at it now is seeing Marquis in a Cardinals hat......blech
In Albert we trust.

holy hell
that was the funniest thing i've ever read
If there's a baseball heaven, Albert Pujols is God.

if you don't know
there's a TON of these at dugout.progressiveboink.com.  Warning: you may lose your job due to uncontrollable laughter.
I believe in the Sports Guy rule. Any "complaining" in this post is actually happy, cheerful "constructive criticism."

It's
What his last name means.  A wainwright is a wagonmaker.

Edwards
Edwards = Edmonds

Anyone know wher that originated from?

by Zubin on May 16, 2007 9:38 PM EDT   0 recs

it was then
memorialized here by our leader as we awaited Game 7.

(Doesn't sound like much now, but it sliced through the tension nicely back then.)

by DCGreg on May 16, 2007 11:18 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Theres also the (over)use of apostrophes...
I think I use these more than anybody else, but I do see them in common usage.

J'Ed or Jed           = Jim Edmonds
A'Pu or Apu           = Albert Pujols
Juan'Cion or JuanCion = Juan Encarnacion
Sco'Ro or ScoRo       = Scott Rollen.

by Zubin on May 18, 2007 1:50 AM EDT   0 recs

Rollen is the new Edwards

for Juan
various forms of "Enc" are also used a lot. That, and "Eck" for David.
On with the youth movement!

Hasn't been around for awhile
But the ridiculous "Instant Breakfast" for JEnc.  Don't know where it was from or who said it, but there's something about being called instant breakfast that is just instantly degrading.

I've referred to Lance Berkman as 'Twinkle Toes', can't even remember if that was original or not.

Pujols < .300 (it worked for .200)

by joker24 on May 20, 2007 3:43 PM EDT   0 recs

it's because
of Carnation Instant Breakfast.

Instant Breakfast
That's from Cardnilly.

by liam on May 21, 2007 1:22 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

that's right
although I think I heard the name around during his stints on other teams.

What I like about Instant Breakfast is it also symbolizes Juan Enc's approach to hitting.  Swing at the first thing close to a strike.

by enoscountry on May 28, 2007 1:59 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Lance
Berkman has always been "Fat Elvis" among my friends.

by rockin redbird on May 28, 2007 6:33 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Someone dig up from I believe a the Freel game
where Izzy gave up the HR at GAB.

The "We named the cat "Izzy's Cutter" because the tail is the last thing you see going over the fence" or something to that effect.

We aren't very good.

by Hardcore Legend on May 21, 2007 2:19 AM EDT   0 recs

haha!
yeah, i remember that! that was so funny, i immediately got over them losing the game.

by kindred on May 22, 2007 1:51 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

He's off the team...
But I swear I was the first (could be wrong) to give Belly-Lard the nickname "Jabba" due to his tongue thing.

by Big Rev on May 21, 2007 5:22 PM EDT   0 recs

I almost forgot about that one.
classic.
Larry Walker for hitting coach!
