[ed]lboros was on the run so I've posted the gamethread on his behalf. I just checked my email, sorry if I'm a tad tardy.
only twice in a 10-year career has brett tomko posted a better-than-league-average era --- 1997 (his rookie season) and 2004. but to look at his list of comps at Baseball Prospectus, you'd think he's an all-star: jim lonborg, ron darling, doyle alexander, brett saberhagen, and rick wise all make the top 20. he has made 4 quality starts in 6 outings this year.
a few quick hits:
- according to yahoo's tim brown, the buy/sell point on jeff weaver should be about $2m; if they're asked to pick up any more of that salary, pass. some of us might say "pass" in any case . . . .
- if weaver doesn't work out, here's another ex-cardinal pitcher who's available. . . .
- yankee fans are feeling our pain --- 8 games down already and floundering. but the yanks have outscored their opponents by 25 runs; the cards have been outscored by 49.
- danup examines the only bright spot on this year's team.
- erik peeks at sleeper prospect luke gregerson.

$2 million...
I believe we sent Tino to the D-Rays in '04 when he had $7.5 million left on his contract, and we ate all but a million. And all we got was Evan Rust and PTBNL who never amounted to anything.
Tino was less crappy in '04 than Weaver is now, imo...
$1 million in '04
Ask Jason Marquis and Ted Lilly.

worst thing i've ever heard
they both suck really bad
What about the White Sox or Reds
Our ERA is 4.10, middle of the pack. Our defense is middle of the pack in all of baseball.
The Rangers and Royals also get consideration.
Our offense is terrible right now, that's a given, however we are atleast 'average' in the pitching and defense areas.
by Hardcore Legend on May 14, 2007 10:38 PM EDT up reply actions
O I agree
It's all kinda fungible -- any team low in the standings be it Rangers, White Sox, Reds or Cardinals will have some apt comparisons that can be made with the Nationals.

As far as McRae goes, I still have a very bad taste in my mouth from the whole how-many-hits-did-Rolen-have thing.

NICE!!! YADI!
"7-0 cardinals ... yes, the cardinals." the team that is the worst at everything in history, worse than any team ever, especially at offense, which is the same as hitting, but not the same thing as pitching to contact. at that they are particularly bad. but somehow they are doing well tonight.

Fantasy Help
What do you think? Give up Sheff for Dunc?
I'm trying to get JJ Hardy for him by giving up Jack Wilson as well but I'm not so sure that will work.
thanks guys
No
Duncan is good, but Shef is nearly guaranteed to put up solid numbers.
I'd try to get Duncan in a package deal. Maybe a 2-2 involving Shef.
I'm surprised
and yet somehow
He hit it hard

Even though the Cardinals didn't score again after Tomko was in the books, they made a bunch of loud outs and hit a bunch of 'Atom' balls.
Hopefully they can get to Lowe and his sinkers early.

Ugh. You just harshed my buzz.
We're facing better starters the next couple nights. But I feel good about Wainwright tomorrow, and who knows for game 3? Kip's numbers were mostly better his last start - maybe he sorted something out....

nice job gents, do it again tomorrow and start making belivers out of all of us.

line score
LAD 4 12 0
....if that doesn't say "2007 Cardinals on a good night," I don't know what does....after all the fireworks early on the Dodgers nearly outhit us.
All this trade talk
Adam Dunn.
The Reds have a $13 M option on him next year and then nothing and I'm sure they are having doubts about locking him up longterm as he really isn't progressing as anything more than a slam or k hitter.
They are falling terribly out of contention, even for only being the month of May and have outfield depth with Hamilton, Freel and a healthy Griffey. Not to mention, I'm sure they would rather spend the $15m+ it will take to get him locked up long term on a better defensive OF that isn't as bad during stretches as he is.
Just a thought.
by Hardcore Legend on May 15, 2007 1:12 AM EDT reply actions
nice thought
and even if they changed their minds, they would want 2-4 of the Cards best prospects, plus Anthony or Adam. and we already have a better player than Dunn in the outfield, he's called Chris Duncan. he can hit for average and power, plus he can play a very good D. something Dunn has never been able to do.
as great as it would be, 1 it's not likely, 2 even it if was it would cost too much. 3 we already have Duncan. personaly I think Dunn needs to play first or go to the American League. he is a liability in the outfield.
One other Red that may be availible
He is going to make 12.5M in 2008 and has a club option of $16.5M in 2009 with a $4M buyout. There is no way in the world they pick up Griffey's 2009 option.
If the Reds organization really is going in the tank as quickly as it appears (9 games under .500 in middle of May), perhaps Junior is looking to play for a team that could get him back into the playoffs.
Are the Cardinals that organization? I don't know. Like I said, go 10-5 to close out the month and you are right back in the divisional race. The Brewers are already showing signs of cracking against tougher NL opponents (2-6 against teams above .500).
Griffey would be a Larry Walker style 'plug' in RF for a potential 2008 and 2009 seasons.
I doubt Griffey will retire anything other than a Red or a DH for some AL team, however anything I guess is possible.
Griffey has always said about his 500th HR that if he had to do it anywhere other than Cincy, he wanted it to be in St. Louis (and it was).
by Hardcore Legend on May 15, 2007 1:32 AM EDT up reply actions
I've always loved Griffey but would be scared
Having said that, if he stays healthy this summer and we're really legitimately in contention come July, I'd love to see him and his bat in Cardinal red. He and Jimmy could both retire as Birds in 2008.
He seems like such a nice guy, and he was so classy to the fan that caught his 500th homer here. If I had a time machine (and some sort of magical super-doctor; stay with me here...) I'd fix his injury problems in Cincy so we'd be talking about him beating Aaron's record, not ol' balloon-head.
by BTown Birds fan on May 15, 2007 2:15 AM EDT up reply actions
The REAL best player of his generation
I've always thought JR might end up in the STL
the Cards would deff want to redue his money, or have the natti pick up some of the money for 08 & 09. I can see JR wearing the Birds on the Bat easier than I can picture Dunn wearing them.
