Lame trade proposal of the day

Chris Burke for Brad Thompson

I know, not very exciting... Burke just got sent down. He's stuck behind Everett, Loretta, Biggio, and now Hunter Pence, the Astros' top prospect.

Burke has never posted an OPS+ higher than 94, but he has a little pop, he can get on base, and he can steal a base. In short, he's not a creaky old geezer.

He would make a nice platoon partner in center with Edmonds or at second with Kennedy, or he could pinch run, pinch hit, and even take over at short if necessary.

Unfortunately, he's arb eligible at the end of this year, so he's due for a raise.

eh....
I wouldn't mind it. he's got c+ speed, C+ pop, C- glove, eh... it wouldn't be bad we wouldn't be giving up much
Jason Marquis still sucks.

Astros wouldn't do it...
... yeah, he's blocked right now. But Biggio and Loretta are both gone after this season, and both are injury risks. Burke is too valuable to them to accept nothing more than Thompson for him.

I don't think...
they like him as an everyday 2nd baseman due to defensive concerns.

His place is in center, but that wouldn't open up unless Pence moved to right, and Luke Scott moved to the bench. Scott's bat is clearly superior to Burke's though, so I doubt they'd do that.

There's also the issue of bad blood developing. Did you read some of those quotes? He sounds like a guy asking for a trade. Plus, unless he produces more, he's going to start being overpaid in 2008.

Don't feel bad..
99% of the trade proposals I see on the different boards are lame...

That said, this one will never happen. Kindred is right; he's too valuable to Houston in the long run.

not really...
he's average at best at second, below in the OF. could be a decent utility man but we have plenty of those already.

Agree
He's a glorified Aaron Miles. Same player, just a slight more pop in his bat, but the Crawford boxes play a large role in that.

The Crawford Boxes
have an effect on his unadjusted stats. They don't change the fact that Chris Burke has much more pop in his bat.

Chris just got sent down with a 94 OPS+, while Miles is posting a robust 66 for the Cardinals.

and/or
better on-base skills I guess I should say.

Burke
For what its worth, he is one really solid citizen.  Resides in KY and would fit St. Louis like a glove as an all around super-sub.  He surely is not as bad as his 07 numbers.  Unfortunately, our current need is not super-sub.

I'd rather
not trade Thompson for him. I have faith in him as a starter.
On with the youth movement!

Thompson
If we get Weaver from Seattle, Thompson becomes expendable.  Until then, we need Thompson to shore up the rotation.  The thought of Keisler taking the hill again for the Cards gives me gas.

haha
maybe the Astros will fall for a Keisler - Burke trade. I'd take that in a heartbeat.

Personally,
the thought of them running Reyes out there every five days gives me nightmares.
