#42
I hope this anniversary will bring back some black player to play baseball!!!

I'm from Italy so I fear that I can't fully understand how important was to have Robinson playing in MLB, but I'm happy that our favorite sport helped to break racial barriers. Wearing #42 on white people is a really good sign that we're all human beings, despite skin color.

anniversary
You know, it's not just black players who have become scarcer in baseball--black fans don't go to games the way they used to, either. What's the capacity of the new Busch, somewhere around 45,000?  It would not shock me to hear that a sold-out game would have more black employees working there than black fans in the seats.

It certainly hasn't always been that way, as anyone who went to games years ago could attest. I don't know the reason. Perhaps there was an explosion of interest in baseball among blacks in the 1940s and '50s because it was the first sport to integrate, and that interest  has simply waned over the years.

Maybe
black people just like basketball and football better.

It certainly seems that way.

They've got a video segment on what was really going on at the time. They get into the proposed walkout by the white players on the other 7 NL teams and how Musial took a stand against the walkout.

Gameday
I wouldn't say I detest the new version, but I do dislike the big ol' ad box permanently in the lower right corner.  Maybe it'll go away when the Right Guard free trial does?  I doubt it.

Speedier data entry on balls in play would win far more fans than pitch-break data.  I know it takes a while to figure some plays out and the Intranet is not always an instantaneous thing, but still...

by jfs on Apr 14, 2007 9:56 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

why would you not
want the data on the pitch? Not that the PFX (or whatever it's called) data is working now, but as person stuck with the radio and gameday many a night, it's a nice feature.

by erik on Apr 14, 2007 10:34 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I'm actually pretty fond
of the new gameday.  I'm sure it's somewhat of a work in progress, but I like the graphics.   Like anything new, you have to learn your way around it.   I really like the last several batters feature where you can see the pitch placement and love the pitch location data...or, I will love the pitch location data once it's trustable.

I also feel it's faster then gameday has been in the past.

by RedbirdRay on Apr 14, 2007 10:44 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Pitch Data
Why they can't even have pitch speed yet is lame, since every stadium has it.  CBS gamecenter does.

But in-play descriptions are still poor, particularly with hit and run situations.  The worst is that interminable pause after saying "ball in play."  Actually, the worst are the frequent lock-ups.

For me it's not so much that gameday is worse, it just isn't any better and the new format is lousy for split screen use.  At least there is competition since MLB lost their law suite claiming to own all the stats.  For right now, cbs gamecenter wins as most improved, and most useful.

agree w/
you there. what's taking so long to get the pitch type and location info going when others have it already?

by erik on Apr 14, 2007 1:11 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Westbrook important?
Not so sure about that one Larry.   I think he will definitely get paid.   But, I think he's just one more of those pitchers I won't have to cross my fingers and hope the Cardinals won't sign.

His line just isn't that impressive.   While his FIP has been considerably better than his actual ERA the last couple years, his peripherals still aren't so impressive.  His career avg is 4.8 K/9 and 2.8 BB/9.

Additionally, PECOTA has him projected to decline rapidly with only 1.7 WARP by 2011, his age 33 year...and a year that would probably still be under contract had he looked at free agency.

He looks like a big salary drain to me.

by RedbirdRay on Apr 14, 2007 10:42 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

he'll surely be overpriced
because all f.a. pitchers are. but i think he's pretty good. he has put up decent era's the last three seasons in a dh league, in a park similar to the cardinals', and has no injury history to speak of. over the last three seasons (04-06) he has a 2:1 k/w ratio and a 4.01 era (again, that's in the american league) and a very low hr/9. put him in the nl and he'd likely do very well.

worth the money? probably not. but given carp's elbow status, who knows what sort of rotation the cards will be bringing back in 2008 . . . . i'd just as soon have westbrook out there as an option.

by lboros on Apr 14, 2007 11:02 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

westbrook
I had business in Cleveland last summer and had a couple of chances to see him at the Jake.  He's a classic JockLaDunc-type hurler - control, control, control. He reminds me of Suppan.
This game interesting.  Westbrook stranded a bunch of runners in the first three innings - genereally looked terrible.  But then he got his control back and pitched a complete game shutout.

New Gameday...
... as for me, I hate it.

I only need to use Gameday when there is a game during the day and I'm at work, (at work they block streaming audio and video)... so for me the most important thing is to be able to glance at the screen and know immediately what the situation is.

That being said, last week someone recommended ESPN's game tracker, (or whatever they call it).  I tried it and it seems much nicer than MLB's Gameday.

New Gameday
I have also quickly acquired a strong dislike for the new Gameday (the informational layout is simply a train wreck).  Thank goodness for the person who made the old version available on an ad hoc basis.

From the...
taking pleasure at other people's misfortune department...

Jason Jennings has tendinitis and will miss a start.

Ok, so what's worse: tendinitis or bone spurs? The bone spurs are going to keep Carp out til after the all-star break (my feeling), but tendinitis sure doesn't sound like much fun either. What is that? An inflamed tendon?

And to add...
a little insult, Hirsh has thrown 11 2/3 innings with the Rox, given up 4 ers with 11ks to 2bbs.

The Stros and Cubbies in meltdown sure is a nice distraction from the Cards' problems...

Gameday
To run the new Gameday I need the newer Flash application. I can't call IT and say "Please let me download so I can watch the Cards."
But with the "old" version I do not need the update.

At home I have tried the new Gameday but don't like it. I use the links to the "old" one.

new vs old
I like the old better.  While I like the new graphics, and can cover up the annoying add, what I can't stand is that the scroll features don't work in Firefox, at least on my computer.

It takes forever to scroll, when I want to go back and see other innings, etc.  And because of the advert, you can't see the whole lineup, after there have been any substitutions.

I use the links to the old Gameday at http://6-4-2.blogspot.com/

WARP question
Me and my friend have a question about WARP that I am hoping someone can help us solve.  Sparked by the WSJ article today on Player Value, I was mentioning to my friend that Pujols was (by the WARP measure) the most valuable player in 06.  My friend, who is a baltimore fan, asked if albert played for baltimore, would his WARP number be the same?  The jist of his question was, if a great offensive player goes from a team with good pitching to a team with bad pitching, does his WARP stay the same?  Theoretically it wouldn't really matter if Babe Ruth played every position, if your pitching was terrible, isn't it possible that you would never win a game and therefore WARP wouldn't matter?

by mcurryatl on Apr 14, 2007 6:18 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

WARP Not Outcome Dependent
I don't know the formula for calculating the WARP figures, but it's not dependent on whether real-life games are won or lost. In fact, I'd guess that Pujols would have more slightly more wins contributed with the same performance as an Oriole, since the AL is a more difficult league.

really guys,
i'm not sure i get why this whole "the old is better" attitude with gameday. maybe i don't remember the old one well enough. i agree it can be a little busy, but i actually like being able eventually look back at an old gameday of a game and see how much wainwright's curve was breaking, how much well's slider was sliding, etc. and for those who say it's slow, sometimes i see what happens in the game before my radio calls it.

a lot of this argument about the old gameday being better sounds like a bunch of old guys talking about the good ol days when you could by coke for a nickel, and it had real coke in it!

ok, crazy illustration...just saying i don't see what all the fuss is about.

by erik on Apr 14, 2007 6:52 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

That griddle article
It could have been written by Murray Chass.

The new gameday is a bit resource intensive. On a slower computer, it's difficult to control the sliders and what-not—scrolling back through the inning recaps can be frustrating.

The extra pitch data is great, though.

Is MLB trying to make God Bless America a new tradition in baseball?  It's not working.  That song sucks and no one can sing it well.  It needs to go.

Just pipe in some Ray Charles belting out his peerless "America, The Beautiful" with some beautiful scenery on the jumbotron if they want to be all patriotic.

Now that'll get the patriotic juices flowing.  That song gives me goosebumps every time.  Way better than that GBA dreck, IMHO.

Q: Why is the Pitch-f/x data only shown for some games but not others?

A: The Pitch-f/x technology is currently up and running in eight ballparks -- Atlanta, Chicago (White Sox), Los Angeles (Angels and Dodgers), San Diego, Seattle, Texas and Toronto -- so this new data is currently only available for games played in those ballparks. However, the system will be operational in all 30 ballparks by the end of the season, so expect to see the Pitch-f/x data for more and more games as the season progresses.

Amaury Cazana Marti
Has hit his 4th home run in 10 games for Minatitlan of the Mexican league.

Bring him in, let him play first base.  ;-)

how many more anemic offensive nights do we have
to watch before they call up JRod.  Even if they don't start him, he's a better offensive option off the bench than Wilson, Gooch and Skip -- I'm tired of watching our pitching get no run support.

Skip
and So should not both be on the bench. One or the other. J-ROD should be up instead of Skip. In fact, I think that he an P-Dub should platoon in RF. (So should he and Enc, when/if Enc comes back.)

Give Soup Some Credit
Rodriguez might not be having any better luck against Suppan than Speezer is.

He fooled him pretty good that last AB.

I more perturbed by the fact that
Aaron Miles is our pinch hitter of choice.

Jimmy's starting to find his swing.
He's putting better swings on the ball tonight.

jed would have hit that ball 500 feet.  sigh.

Perfect Suppan
This is what he does to bad hitting clubs.

Kennedy?
Why did we give a guy a 3 YR/$10M deal to a 2B who can't hit lefties?

well done preston
i'd hate to have you TAKE BALL FOUR to load the bases instead of getting yourself out.

ok, last negative post of the night from me.  go, redbirds.

Nice Job, Miles
Hit it where they ain't.

Too bad
Those two pinch hits didn't happen in the other order or this'd be a tied ballgame.

FYI
Pujols is 0-9 with a walk and four strikeouts against Rick Wise.

He's due, is all I'm saying.

I didn't notice that, but I ...
...think his stance is wider and the crouch correspondingly lower.

Bat
I don't remember his bat being so twitchy as the pitcher is delivering.

hmm
this has now officially the worst albert has struggled in his career?

he isn't hitting into "tough luck" either.

last year i never worried because we had our ace carp who matches up with any pitcher, and the best hitter in baseball, albert of course.

right now we dont have either, hehe.

im scared

Schumaker needs to go
That was bad.  Many here think he shows "effort" but it's clear he is worse than Wilson.  He failed last year and is doing again this year.

alright, I'm convinced now.
it's time to end the Skip Schumaker Experiment and bring up Rodriguez.  he's at the very least a proven commodity off the bench in the late innings.

by madding on Apr 14, 2007 10:32 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

optimism
the way i look at it, pujols is in the worst slump of his career, carp is on the DL, and the offense hasn't gotten it goin' yet. that said, the cards are still 5-5. it can only go up, right?

The second best reason to buy MLB.TV
(besides watching every Cardinal game not in the Bay Area)

Listening to Vin Scully call Dodger home games.  He is just so, so good.

2006 World Champs! Inconceivable! You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

by BozCardsFanSF on Apr 14, 2007 11:15 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

i look forward
to every cards/dodgers series for exactly that reason.  he's lyrical and wonderful to listen to.  his knowledge and rhetoric are currently without peer.

I'm relatively certain that I heard
Dan say during the broadcast that Carpenter had a cortisone shot in his elbow.  Did anyone else hear that?  I meant to bring it up earlier but was busying screaming John Rodriguez at my TV. (Sometimes I scream John Gall for old times sake.)

If (and I'm not positive -- I'm gonna try and find a link) Carpenter had a cortisone shot, is that different than the lubricant previously injected and does that indicate that Carp is having pain?
