Looper starting off against Mets

I don't get why you throw Looper in his first ML start against the Mets when the rotation could have been stacked to put Reyes in that slot.  Looper facing Beltran and Delgado (lefty power) ... doesn't look like the smart play.

Anybody else got a take on why this makes sense?

challenge
TLR and Dunc are clearly challenging Looper. he should be motivated to beat his old club, and it's an early chance to see what Looper's got as a starter.

personally, i think he's gonna get smacked around. but that, plus TLR/Dunc's predeliction for having veterans at the top of the rotation, is probably what's dictating the decision.

reyes
I wonder how Reyes feels about it.  TLR/Dunc are saying they view Looper as ranking higher in the starter pecking order than Reyes coming out of the gate in 2008.  Strange call on the part of the brain trust.

could be simple
Maybe Looper asked for the job, and they didn't want to start the season by shooting him down.

Or...
It sets up the rotation for the rest of the first half. After the first week the rotation goes as follows: Carp, Wainwright, Reyes, Wells, Looper

Looper's first start is rough, but then he has 2 starts against the Pirates and 2 starts against the Cubs...both pretty shy of lefties.

Also
I recall reading a while back that Delgado may miss the first couple of days because of his wife's impending delivery of a child...  Haven't heard anything lately though.
