Player Value Rankings - SI.com

The rankings of the pitchers are found here:
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/writers/david_sabino/03/20/pvr.pitchers/index.html

of note:  Carpenter is ranked as the 3rd best pitcher in MLB. No surprise. Adam Wainwright is ranked #20 14th best starter. Anyone else really surprised by that?

others of note:
Reyes - 102
Wells - 182
Looper - 195
Thompson - 204
Mulder - 298
Josh Fogg - 309

Jason Marquis - 263
Mark Prior - 245

If pressed, I would probably be more comfortable with Looper as a starter over Marquis and Prior.

Thoughts?

uh yeah...
a little surprised. Reyes 102? 82 spots behind Wainwright... Wainwright over Dice-K, Dontrelle, Lackey, Felix Hernandez, Haren, Jered Weaver???

Way too bullish on AW

I'm a huge Wainwright fan...
and I agree too bullish except for maybe Weaver, who I worry about the arm trouble with and has one season only in the books.  The others I would take in a lock over Wainwright.

That said, he puts up better numbers than at least two of those guys this summer.

Overrating AW
His strikeout of Beltran showed toughness, a great curveball, and composure.  But it's far short of showing that he can perform at that level over a season as a starter.

20 is too high, and I can't see rating him over Bonderman and Schilling; or Papelbon, for that matter.

OTOH, at least he has pitched in the majors, which Matsuzaka hasn't, so I would rate him over Matsuzaka.

Others conspicuously overrated: Harang (lucky, but not that good), Todd Jones (WAAAAAY lucky, and not that good), and Izzy (because of the injury cloud)

He got Marquis right, though

We'll see on Wainright
He could be right on target, but it is just a statistical projection based mainly on his ERA and WHIP.  The kid may come unglued midseason, but he doesn't seem like the type.

On the other hand, Reyes, Wells and Izzy could significantly outperform those preseason ranks.
