Sat 17 Mar Spring Training Game
Man, what a slugfest.
Although the Birds came out on top, this was not a pretty game. It was also the first sign of Looper's vulnerability as a starter. The spring phantasm of unrealistic performance has been dispelled.
His line for today:
IP H R ER BB SO HR ERA WHIP GO AO
3.0 7 4 4 2 1 1 12.00 3.00 5 3
His ERA jumped from the unlikely 0.83 to a "back to reality" 3.21. His total ST line now:
G GS IP H R ER BB SO HR ERA WHIP GO AO SLG OBA
4 4 14.0 17 5 5 3 6 1 3.21 1.43 20 16 .421 .333
So guys are now hitting .298 against him, w/ a .333 OBP and .421 slugging. Pretty much league average-ish.
On the plus side, at least he's not walking a lot of guys, right? :-/
His next start should be telling.
But does anyone think it will make any difference on whether or not he lands that 5th starter spot? Personally, I don't. Alea iacta est.

Winning's not to be taken for granted.

same lesson
the starting rotation was not well-managed in 2006, and that probably cost the team 3 or 4 wins at a minimum (and nearly the division). the looper experiment will help us understand whether '06 was just an off-year for tony and dave . . . . or something else.
