THE Offseason solution

1. Trade Scott Rolen to the Dodgers for Juan Pierre

Pierre's contract:
08:$8M, 09:$10M, 10:$10M, 11:$8.5M

Rolen's contract:
08:$12M, 09:$12M, 10:$12M

Work out the financials. The Dodgers are looking for a 3b and STL needs a leadoff hitter. Pierre would be fast and a great leadoff "whiteyball" type player.

Pierre's last 5 years in steals and batting average with hits:
07- 64, .293, 196
06- 58, .292, 204
05- 57, .276, 181
04- 45, .326, 221
03- 65, .305, 204

2. Trade Jim Edmonds and Anthony Reyes to the Texas Rangers for Kevin Millwood and Hank Blalock

Millwood's contract:
08:$8.5M, 09:$11M, 10:$12M

Blalock's contract:
08:$5.95M, 09:$6.2M club option

Edmonds' contract:
08:$8M

Reyes: league minimum til 2010

Texas has expressed interest in Edmonds and would like to get Millwood's salary off their hands. Which is what the Cardinals need. Millwood could come back to the NL where he has been sucessful. An innings eater, and a good veteran presence in the rotation.

Rids team of Reyes and gains an everyday third baseman.

3. Play Brian Barton everyday in right field.

This is a 5 tool player that needs to stay in Cardinal red. His BballRef comparables include Carlos Beltran, and some say he is in the same mold as Chris Young. Ankiel just wont cut it in my book as a starter.

4. Resign Jeff Weaver.

Bring back Dream Weaver. Plain and simple. Get it done.

This would leave the following 08 lineup and Rotation:

cf- Juan Pierre
rf- Brian Barton
1b- Albert Pujols
3b- Hank Blalock
lf- Chris Duncan
c- Yadier Molina
2b- Adam Kennedy
ss- Cesar Izturis
p- Pitchers spot

  1. Adam Wainwright
  2. Kevin Millwood
  3. Braden Looper
  4. Jeff Weaver
  5. Joel Pineiro
Carpenter comes back midseason and everyone shifts down 1. Looper goes back to the bullpen.
  1. Chris Carpenter
  2. Adam Wainwright
  3. Kevin Millwood
  4. Jeff Weaver
  5. Joel Pineiro

The only plausible choice is resigning Jeff Weaver. I don't think he adds much to the team. Edmonds and Reyes for Blalock and Millwood is never going to happen, not even the Rangers are that stupid. Lasly, there's a reason you did not post the .obp for Pierre... and thats because he just plain 'aint that good.

I'd prefer sending Rolen and Reyes to the Dodgers for Laroche and Kemp, then Duncan and a minor leaguer (Anderson maybe?) to the Giants for Lincecum or Cain. mlbtraderumors.com said the Giants were dangling Lincecum for Rios; Rios is the same age as Dunc, but plays significantly better defense... Anderson could possibly be too much to throw in if they were just asking for Rios though.

well
I explained my rationalization for Cain/Lincecum, but the Rolen/Reyes trade is obviously a little out there (though a Rolen/Laroche swap has been discussed at numerous locations). Kemp I dont have my heart set on, so leave him off.

All I have to say is
The solution to bad contracts is absolutely not trading for worse ones.  As bad as 3/36 might be, at least we are not paying said $36 million to Pierre.

Rolen and Pierre had identical OBP's last season, and Rolen had an excuse.  Additionally anything Pierre adds with his speed is lost with his defense.

well
but with the mess we are in with rolen right now, taking on another bad contract is all we might get, at least it fills some holes

pierre
pierre's contract is atrocious. what are you going to do with him when rasmus comes up? how can you justify starting him over rasmus on opening day? why would the cardinals ever back into four years with a player they project to need for 0 of those years?

by johnstonburg on Dec 7, 2007 2:25 AM EST reply actions

rasmus
when rasmus comes up, move pierre to left, and trade chris duncan for whatever is the need at the time

no reason to trade duncan until his stock is high again

thats it?
so you'll sacrifice the fact that he:
  1. runs the bases extremely well and has phenomenal speed
  2. has batted leadoff before on a championship team (03 marlins)
  3. has averaged 201 hits per year over the past 5 seasons, leading the NL in hits in 04 and 06
  4. hasnt missed a game in 5 years
  5. never strikesout..he has lead the NL in at bats per strikeout the past 5 seasons
all this because of his defense?
that sounds biased

Responses
  1. Rolen also runs the bases well, though obviously not as fast.
  2. Doesn't matter. Seriously, who cares? Rolen's won a World Series, too.
  3. 200 hits! Such a shiny number. Now look up how many outs he's making per year over those five seasons. A lot.
  4. It's always amusing to me when someone who's terrible is praised for not missing time. He sucks daily!
  5. Okay, so he never strikes out...or hits a homer.
He's awful.

Jayson Stark, is that you?
Sorry, I just couldn't help myself.
  1. Speed just isn't that important anymore. Scott Rolen doesn't have great speed, but he's an intelligent baserunner. Their 2007 OBP's were identical, but Rolen's OPS+ was 89 compared to Pierre's 75. That power surge more than makes up for the lack of speed.
  2. Anthony Reyes once pitched the game of his life in Game 1 of the World Series. Does that make his 2007 ERA+ of 73 any better?
  3. See Point #1 about his OPS+ of 75.
  4. Irrelevant. He wouldn't be one of the three best outfielders on our 40-man roster, IMHO.
  5. Adam Dunn struck out 165 times in 152 games in 2007. Once again, OPS+: Pierre 75, Dunn 136. Which of those two would you rather have?
I'm not trying to pick on you, omsh, I just would be infuriated if we picked up Juan Pierre. Even if he is from my state.

What is biased
about a player that is lousy on defense and has a dead arm, can't throw a lick. I'm sorry but I see nothing in your proposals except possibly Rolen for Laroache.

by ridgesee on Dec 7, 2007 9:16 AM EST up reply actions

youve got to be kidding me
First off, the idea of adding Juan Pierre to this team is just plain dumb. Why would you trade Rolen for four years of Juan Pierre? What does he bring to the table? He isn't a good leadoff man because of his poor OBS, has a weak arm, plays bad defense, blocks our best prospect, and brings absolutely no salary relief or young players. Not to mention OF is probably the position we are best stocked at with Duncan, Ankiel, Edmonds, Ludwick, Schu, and now Barton.

To believe that Texas would trade us their starting 3B(who is 27 and is a former All-Star), as well as one of their better starting pitchers for an aging and injury prone CF and a SP who pitched his way out of the rotation not to mention  out of favor with the organization is wishful thinking.

Lastly, I don't see your point regarding Rick Ankiel. Hes young, he hits for power, plays strong defense, and has a rocket for an arm. He could potentially turn into a strong defender who absolutely mashes at the plate. He has tons of upside and he has enough experience at the Major League level to be useful. As much as I love Barton (Excellent pickup), hes far from a sure thing and is no where near ready to start everyday. Ankiel should be the starting RF and should spell Edmonds in CF allowing for some PT for Barton.

1. Trade Scott Rolen to the Dodgers for Juan Pierre

The day this team has Cesar Izturis AND Juan Pierre on it, I quit baseball forever.

Don't forget
Millwood has a giant signing bonus that has not been paid yet.....

by sleepl355 on Dec 7, 2007 4:40 AM EST reply actions

Barton
So you actually think he can do better then Ankiel? I am not convinced.........
You cant depend on who some people compare him too it doesnt mean he is going to do anything. Don`t get me wrong I hope Barton is awesome but everyone I have heard talk seems to think of him as a backup OF.
I think that Ankiel could be really good, I mean even if he strikes out a lot having that arm in the outfield is really helpful.... I see Ankiel starting everyday for the Cards in 08.
I actually do agree with you on your Weaver point hopefully only have to give him a 1-2 year deal nothing longer then that though....
I have one word for your Juan Pierre trade......
NO..............

by Calhoun on Dec 7, 2007 8:30 AM EST reply actions

If I was asked to name
what player in the Cardinal's orginization that I thought could lead the club (along with Pujols) to the next NL Championship, I would say without hesitation, Rick Ankiel.

by ridgesee on Dec 7, 2007 9:40 AM EST up reply actions

Larry Bowa
He is the third base coach so I don't think Torre would want to re-fuel that fire.
Jeff Weaver...no please.
Millwood would be alright, but has just of a contract as the others you just traded. Blalock would be good though.
Ankiel can start. I think Barton should move to left or ANkiel to left and put Barton there. Trade Duncan but they won't trade Duncan due to daddy.
Juan Pierre can steal yes, but that's it.

by acornbowler on Dec 7, 2007 9:11 AM EST reply actions

I am going to cut Pierre some slack
He really isn't as bad as some here are saying. Now come on. I first noticed him for real in '03 with 65 steals 100rs and ops of .734. I thought maybe this kids got something. In 2004 I was thinking wow I want this guy. 2006 with the Cubs he didn't make and error and his defense improved.

I admitt that this guy has to have an obp in the .375 range. With out that he is not as effective. To use words like he sucks his overly harsh.

With all that said I still would not trade Rolen for him. The only Rolen trade rumor I have heard and liked was Rolen for LaRoche/Elbert.

My expectations for this off season have been real low. I have dreamed and posted those dreams, but the reality is I don't expect much. The management says they want a pitcher, but if they don't move Reyes they have no room.

Rotation:

Wainman
Welley/Mulder
Loop
Pineiro
Reyes/Carp

Reyes is out of options so if he can not be traded he plays. There is no way he passes through wavers.

The outfield is set:

Duncan
Jed
Ankeil
Barton/Ludwick
Schu in Memphis

The infield is set:

Rolen
Iz
Kennedy
Pujols
Molina

Speez/Ryan/LaRue

So Welley gets some starts waiting for Mulder. Reyes starts until Carp gets back. If Reyes does well that would be a wonderful thing. Maybe he has trade value at the deadline, or he stays and Loop goes to the pen.

I Don't want any of the FA pitchers beacuse the contracts that are being discussed are scarey. So a trade of Duncan for a pre-arb pitcher would be nice, but not likely.

If Duncan got traded then a signing of Bradley would be possible. Barton and Schu would play left until Milton was ready to play then Schu would have to move. Most likely back to AAA.

So, in reality I don't see much more than this happening

what to do
i have no idea what trades the cards should make, but i do feel that we should be trying to build a team that is more than just competitive in the nl central.  to me this means no juan pierre or hank blalocks.  andy laroche, ok; any young giants pitcher, ok. etc.  we should not be giving up assets for has beens or soon to be has beens.  you only win with exceptional players and the only way to get them is to raise them.  fa's rarely cut it.  aside from some pitching, i'm ok with the cards line-up as is.  tlr and rolen just need to get on with their business.  in the end our whole season is really dependent on health.  if we don't get that back for mulder, carpenter, edmunds, etc, then we go nowhere anyway. too many pieces to fix to make a bunch of gambles around the edges worthwhile.

by sportsman on Dec 7, 2007 10:00 AM EST up reply actions

seams
we agree. Rolen, Edmonds, Mulder in good health this team is real good. Reyes pitches in a league ave way this team could be exciting.

PWN3D RE: Pierre...
by BP.  Check out what they have to say about Pierre, who will move to LF to make room for Andruw Jones:

"Consider also that the Dodgers have an expensive albatross in Juan Pierre, the good-guy, bad-player combination to whom they owe $36 million over the next four seasons. Pierre was already an inadequate center fielder, and he'll be even worse, relative to par, in left field, where he may block a better player in Andre Ethier.  Consider that Jones' WARP in 2007, the worst year of his career, was 4.6. Pierre's WARP in 2006 and 2007 combined was 4.3."
