THE Offseason solution
1. Trade Scott Rolen to the Dodgers for Juan Pierre
Pierre's contract:
08:$8M, 09:$10M, 10:$10M, 11:$8.5M
Rolen's contract:
08:$12M, 09:$12M, 10:$12M
Work out the financials. The Dodgers are looking for a 3b and STL needs a leadoff hitter. Pierre would be fast and a great leadoff "whiteyball" type player.
Pierre's last 5 years in steals and batting average with hits:
07- 64, .293, 196
06- 58, .292, 204
05- 57, .276, 181
04- 45, .326, 221
03- 65, .305, 204
2. Trade Jim Edmonds and Anthony Reyes to the Texas Rangers for Kevin Millwood and Hank Blalock
Millwood's contract:
08:$8.5M, 09:$11M, 10:$12M
Blalock's contract:
08:$5.95M, 09:$6.2M club option
Edmonds' contract:
08:$8M
Reyes: league minimum til 2010
Texas has expressed interest in Edmonds and would like to get Millwood's salary off their hands. Which is what the Cardinals need. Millwood could come back to the NL where he has been sucessful. An innings eater, and a good veteran presence in the rotation.
Rids team of Reyes and gains an everyday third baseman.
3. Play Brian Barton everyday in right field.
This is a 5 tool player that needs to stay in Cardinal red. His BballRef comparables include Carlos Beltran, and some say he is in the same mold as Chris Young. Ankiel just wont cut it in my book as a starter.
4. Resign Jeff Weaver.
Bring back Dream Weaver. Plain and simple. Get it done.
This would leave the following 08 lineup and Rotation:
cf- Juan Pierre
rf- Brian Barton
1b- Albert Pujols
3b- Hank Blalock
lf- Chris Duncan
c- Yadier Molina
2b- Adam Kennedy
ss- Cesar Izturis
p- Pitchers spot
- Adam Wainwright
- Kevin Millwood
- Braden Looper
- Jeff Weaver
- Joel Pineiro
- Chris Carpenter
- Adam Wainwright
- Kevin Millwood
- Jeff Weaver
- Joel Pineiro

No thanks
I'd prefer sending Rolen and Reyes to the Dodgers for Laroche and Kemp, then Duncan and a minor leaguer (Anderson maybe?) to the Giants for Lincecum or Cain. mlbtraderumors.com said the Giants were dangling Lincecum for Rios; Rios is the same age as Dunc, but plays significantly better defense... Anderson could possibly be too much to throw in if they were just asking for Rios though.
i expect critics but really?
All I have to say is
Rolen and Pierre had identical OBP's last season, and Rolen had an excuse. Additionally anything Pierre adds with his speed is lost with his defense.

hell no
thats it?
- runs the bases extremely well and has phenomenal speed
- has batted leadoff before on a championship team (03 marlins)
- has averaged 201 hits per year over the past 5 seasons, leading the NL in hits in 04 and 06
- hasnt missed a game in 5 years
- never strikesout..he has lead the NL in at bats per strikeout the past 5 seasons
that sounds biased
Responses
- Rolen also runs the bases well, though obviously not as fast.
- Doesn't matter. Seriously, who cares? Rolen's won a World Series, too.
- 200 hits! Such a shiny number. Now look up how many outs he's making per year over those five seasons. A lot.
- It's always amusing to me when someone who's terrible is praised for not missing time. He sucks daily!
- Okay, so he never strikes out...or hits a homer.
Jayson Stark, is that you?
- Speed just isn't that important anymore. Scott Rolen doesn't have great speed, but he's an intelligent baserunner. Their 2007 OBP's were identical, but Rolen's OPS+ was 89 compared to Pierre's 75. That power surge more than makes up for the lack of speed.
- Anthony Reyes once pitched the game of his life in Game 1 of the World Series. Does that make his 2007 ERA+ of 73 any better?
- See Point #1 about his OPS+ of 75.
- Irrelevant. He wouldn't be one of the three best outfielders on our 40-man roster, IMHO.
- Adam Dunn struck out 165 times in 152 games in 2007. Once again, OPS+: Pierre 75, Dunn 136. Which of those two would you rather have?
What is biased
youve got to be kidding me
To believe that Texas would trade us their starting 3B(who is 27 and is a former All-Star), as well as one of their better starting pitchers for an aging and injury prone CF and a SP who pitched his way out of the rotation not to mention out of favor with the organization is wishful thinking.
Lastly, I don't see your point regarding Rick Ankiel. Hes young, he hits for power, plays strong defense, and has a rocket for an arm. He could potentially turn into a strong defender who absolutely mashes at the plate. He has tons of upside and he has enough experience at the Major League level to be useful. As much as I love Barton (Excellent pickup), hes far from a sure thing and is no where near ready to start everyday. Ankiel should be the starting RF and should spell Edmonds in CF allowing for some PT for Barton.
You lost me at
The day this team has Cesar Izturis AND Juan Pierre on it, I quit baseball forever.
No doubt...

Barton
You cant depend on who some people compare him too it doesnt mean he is going to do anything. Don`t get me wrong I hope Barton is awesome but everyone I have heard talk seems to think of him as a backup OF.
I think that Ankiel could be really good, I mean even if he strikes out a lot having that arm in the outfield is really helpful.... I see Ankiel starting everyday for the Cards in 08.
I actually do agree with you on your Weaver point hopefully only have to give him a 1-2 year deal nothing longer then that though....
I have one word for your Juan Pierre trade......
NO..............
If I was asked to name
Larry Bowa
Jeff Weaver...no please.
Millwood would be alright, but has just of a contract as the others you just traded. Blalock would be good though.
Ankiel can start. I think Barton should move to left or ANkiel to left and put Barton there. Trade Duncan but they won't trade Duncan due to daddy.
Juan Pierre can steal yes, but that's it.

I am going to cut Pierre some slack
I admitt that this guy has to have an obp in the .375 range. With out that he is not as effective. To use words like he sucks his overly harsh.
With all that said I still would not trade Rolen for him. The only Rolen trade rumor I have heard and liked was Rolen for LaRoche/Elbert.
My expectations for this off season have been real low. I have dreamed and posted those dreams, but the reality is I don't expect much. The management says they want a pitcher, but if they don't move Reyes they have no room.
Rotation:
Wainman
Welley/Mulder
Loop
Pineiro
Reyes/Carp
Reyes is out of options so if he can not be traded he plays. There is no way he passes through wavers.
The outfield is set:
Duncan
Jed
Ankeil
Barton/Ludwick
Schu in Memphis
The infield is set:
Rolen
Iz
Kennedy
Pujols
Molina
Speez/Ryan/LaRue
So Welley gets some starts waiting for Mulder. Reyes starts until Carp gets back. If Reyes does well that would be a wonderful thing. Maybe he has trade value at the deadline, or he stays and Loop goes to the pen.
I Don't want any of the FA pitchers beacuse the contracts that are being discussed are scarey. So a trade of Duncan for a pre-arb pitcher would be nice, but not likely.
If Duncan got traded then a signing of Bradley would be possible. Barton and Schu would play left until Milton was ready to play then Schu would have to move. Most likely back to AAA.
So, in reality I don't see much more than this happening
what to do
PWN3D RE: Pierre...
"Consider also that the Dodgers have an expensive albatross in Juan Pierre, the good-guy, bad-player combination to whom they owe $36 million over the next four seasons. Pierre was already an inadequate center fielder, and he'll be even worse, relative to par, in left field, where he may block a better player in Andre Ethier. Consider that Jones' WARP in 2007, the worst year of his career, was 4.6. Pierre's WARP in 2006 and 2007 combined was 4.3."
