Mo's Diary III

6am - woke up from a nightmare that I had only signed Larue, Brazelton, Wasdin and Itzuris

6:01 - got out of bed, very nervous for some reason

6:30 - get to office early, gotta show some leadership and get on top of this TLR, Rolen thing

6:35 - Mom calls, says she's never heard of any of these guys I've signed.....wants to know if I saw Dolly Parton at the Opryland Hotel....I tell her no but that Cashman and Epstein were making fun of me in Nashville by seeing who could make me the most ridiculous offer....then they nicknamed me and Luhnow "rock and a hard place"

7am - Read the papers and see Strauss quote on how I attempted to broker a deal between TLR and Rolen - sounds good but the truth is I drove all the way to Scott's home in Jasper IN only to be shot at - fly out to SF, TLR shows me a letter where Scotty threatens to buy all the shelter animals and use them as target practice on farm in Jasper

7:15am - call WJ for advice but can't understand him because he's laughing so hard

7:30am - FOCUS, FOCUS, FOCUS...I have an MBA, I'm a GM, I was interviewed on ESPN, I have a private bathroom and sometimes I get to ride for free on Bill's private plane......surely I can brainstorm my way out of this mess

  • set up a Jupiter spring training pay-per-view cage match fight to the death between TLR and Rolen....buy pitching with the profits
  • bring back Mitchell Page...if I can get them drinking.....
  • draw a big circle around third base area where TLR is not allowed to enter....have Time Out chair in far end of dugout for Rolen
  • Trade them both to the Nats...hee hee
  • Change their uniform numbers to confuse and distract everyone
  • Get Duncans to beat the hell out of both of them
  • Broker a deal where silence is required but every time Rolen pops up, TLR gets one free na-nana-boo-boo
  • Let Paletta operate on both of them
  • Ban double switches and LOOGYs until TLR apologizes
  • Maybe the folks at VEB will have some ideas

    OR
tell rolen to go to hell. there are millions of people everyday who get up and go work for somebody they don't like. Perhaps he needs to get his spoiled little pussy cry baby ass a real job and come back to earth. then if I were mo I'd give larussa a raise. For telling it the way it is and actually trying to do his job.

Thats one way to put it...
Yes, Rolen should go out there and do his job, but has he actually said he won't?

LaRussa might be right, but it's DUMB for him to make these recent public comments.

It just makes Mo's job that much harder.

    rolen
I would like to polietly disagree. Rolens job is not just to play but to be part of the team. TLR'S job is to be the manager of that team.

    I just read
on MLB homepage these comments from La Russa:
"He's got a contract to play, and we need him to play. And he's going to be treated very honestly. If he plays hard and plays as well as he can, he plays. If he doesn't, he'll sit. If he doesn't like it, he can quit." I think this is crossing the line. I can see these comments being made privately to Rolen. But to the press and at the winter meeting no less, with the world watching. Tacky, tacky, tacky. Rolen meanwhile for two years has kept his mouth completely shut. Rolen has kept completely silent to the fan base what he is even upset about. Never have I seen Rolen look like he was giving anything less than a 100% on the field. (yet La Russa seemed to want to tag him with "dogging it" publicly I like a lot of other people got tired of the prolonged slump he seemed to be in last year and had decided that he was loosing it as a hitter. He never hinted that anything was wrong and then came the cortizone shots and the bat came back but didn't last and he, from what I understand had to take himself out of the lineup and submit to more sergery. Rolen seems to be a man of few words and seems to have enough character to perform to his best capabilities even under adverse conditions. I can see nothing productive in La Russa's comments and I think it proves what I have suspected for a long time and that is that Tony La Russa is a man with too big of an ego.

PS and too big a mouth

    "Get Duncans to beat the"...
    has my vote.
It's easier not to make the mistake than to make the mistake and try to fix it. -Mo

    Being from Indiana
I can see where Scott is coming from.  That's why he has kept his mouth shut.  How much has he said in public to run Tony in the ground or through fuel on the fire?  I met him when we were in high school playing ball and you couldn't have asked for a better team mate or opponent.  Always trying to help and very gracious.  This was still 14 years ago but I understand Indiana farm kids considering I'm was one of em.  You don't call us out on our work ethic and you don't mess with our livelyhood unless you want a pissed off Hoosier in your ass.  If Tony wants to stay on his self righteous horse and call people out in public then he needs knocked off and it should have been done this winter.  I'm not saying he's not one of the greatest managers of all time because I truly believe he is.  I'm all for helping animals to a point and I hate to see them suffer needlessly but can you really trust a lawyer who doesn't eat meat?

    Hoosiers
Being from Indiana doesn't guarantee a closed mouth - at least that's what I learned from Bobby Knight.  And speaking of The General, what's the deal with he and TLR being friends?  What an odd couple!  Maybe that's the problem........TLR has been taking grace classes from Bobby

ps - despite my disdain for RMK, I do understand and appreciate the rural IN humility and work ethic

    Knight is not from Indiana
he is from Ohio.  He got transplanted here and is still one of the best college basketball coaches on the face of the earth.  It's just too bad he couldn't keep his mouth shut.

    Okay
I'll give you the Ohio thing - and the great basketball coach but with poor behavior - but I'm still curious about the Odd Couple and would love to hear what TLR and RMK talk about when no one's around

    Maybe..
They digest the Woody Hayes Book of Qoutes together. Its like a Jack Handy book for a-holes)

"That will take care of you, you son of a bitch." ..after greeting Clemson's Charlie Bauman on the field.

"I never saw a guy make a tackle with a smile on his eff-in face."

"The only way we'd get beaten was if we got a little fat-headed or if we had dissension on the squad." Tonys favorite as of late.

"Without winners, there wouldn't even be any gol- damned civilization....would there!"

"A guy from Ohio can make it in life if he works hard enough." Speaking of Ohio, Bobbys current favorite.

Then they give Pinella and Dusty a call and share Earl Weaver moments.

Trade for Sean Rodriguez! (But please dont call him S-Rod!)
