The "I Hated" Year-End List

Dear Diary,

So I'm watching Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer with my son, and my wife channel flips (ugh)- stopping at a commercial for a "year in review" special or something.  That got me thinking.  There are always going to be the "Best of" and "Worst of" lists at year end.  But no list that is a spleen cleaning, over-the-top, bile spewing manifestation of hatred.

I'm out to fix that.  But I just thought that now, (with every swinging Richard posting rumors about how the Cards will only trade Rolen to the Brewers if they give up 4 ambidexterous pitchers with .425 OBA  and a extra large frozen Charleston Chew (uncracked) by next Tuesday at 3:01pm), it might be good to get some things off our chests.

Of course, Dear Diary, if this flies, we'll have to do an opposite of hatred list...I hope others feel free to let loose with their hate lists, keeping it clean and generally on the subject of baseball and sports - things we never hope to see again that we saw in 2007.  So here's my 5 (in no particular order...)

  1. The media speculation around George Steinbrenner's health and mental agility. There should have been a simple statement of facts, and then moving on.
  2. Bernie's use of the term "Don Tony". Every time I read that, it's the literary equivalent of nails on a chalkboard.
  3. The term "Young Musial".  He's not.
  4. Incessant coverage of relationships between sports figures and their coaches. Reyes was 2-14 last year.  I don't care if TLR/Dunc like him.  HE WAS 2-14.
  5. The NBA. Unwatchable.

People who...

...logged long and hard with hoorays to sign Barry Bonds to the Cards a few weeks ago :)! Even before the GJ info hit the news...it was soooo distasteful.

Id rather sign Pedro Gomez!

Trade for Sean Rodriguez! (But please dont call him S-Rod!)

Touche
Even so, I would still take him.  C'mon, right now he is the prototype for the TLR #2 hitter....gets on base with some thunder in the bat.

I can't wait for the Mitchell report.

... you dislike capitalism?

by kindred on Dec 5, 2007 12:16 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

it's not capitalism
it's mercantilism at best, cronyism at worst.  The government artificially props up these non-publicly traded corporations with a monopoly exemption, tax benefits and stadium development deals...  They are subject to none of the checks and balances of capitalism but get all of the benefits.  for slimeballs like Selig to, on one hand, claim that they need handouts to build new stadiums, and on the other proudly announce that they are making money in the billions, and continuing to raise prices on parking and beer and mlb.tv etc in the process is just disgusting.

We're all such suckers...

Here we go
  1. definatly steve phillips-I just keep wondering, how does this man keep getting work?
  2.  Keith Law-hated him last year, still hate em now
  3. Boston and their sports in general
  4. people on the radio (590, 1380) thinking we could actually get santana/Cabrera
  5. The Mitchell report, just release it for the love of God so we can get it over with and move on.

Young Musial for sure, excellent point
  1. Young Musial - Jeff Gordon drove me nuts with this thing.  Ankiel is 27.  At best, he's 'Old Francoeur'.
  2. Joe Buck's broadcasting - was it ever good?  I can't remember.
  3. MLB TV package on Mac - frustrating ordeal that in the end really wasn't worth it.
  4. Continued failure of the Cardinals to honor Mark McGwire properly.  The guy made those owners so rich '97-'99, helping to build the new stadium with the revenue brought in. And now...we hide his statue in a warehouse instead of displaying with all the other Cardinal greats at Bush III.
  5. Ron Santo on the radio - kind of love/hate here.  Living in Chicago gives me the chance to listen to Ronnie tell me how he missed the last play because he didn't have his glasses on.  Frustrating mostly, occasionally hilarious.

by lightbulb on Dec 4, 2007 10:44 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Plus one on Santo
It is a mostly painful experience to listen to Ronnie on the radio.  (Almost as painful: listening to Cubs fans tell me how great he is as an announcer because all of his physical sufferings.  Sorry for the guy, but the two things don't equate.)  But I am always amused by the fashion report: Ron usually recites what everyone is wearing, right down to the umpires' choice of sock color.  Intruiging stuff.

I forgot one of my own
Just saw the commercial for the Pujols pack, which leads me to...

The way they sell tickets for Opening Day. The internet will be busy on Saturday, but a sure helluva lot of scalpers on eBay from California.  Seriously, this pisses me off so F*ING much.  There needs to be walk-up sales for Opening Day tickets.

Nothing too new...
  1. Not so much Boston sports teams, as Boston fans.  It used to just Midwestern Boston fans, until a true Boston fan showed up at my work...much worse.
  2.  Somehow hanging around the central long enough not to be in "sell mode" at the deadline.
  3.  The BCS.
  4.  Starting pitching (except the wagonmaker).
  5.  Over-emphasis of terms applied to white players that lack natural ability (e.g. grit, scrappiness, heart, grittiness, etc. etc.)
  6.  Popularity of any new MLB gear (see spring training caps.  I'm sorry.  They are ugly.  And what's the point? Do you love spring training, but think the regular season/postseason is just 'ok'?)
  7.  Pretty much anything else mentioned above.  I could go on and on...

The Red Sox & Yankees killing baseball
at least for the rest of the country.

It's like these 2 teams are the only teams that matter to most of the media (ESPN,and others).
The coverage they get is just overwhelming and I would think everyone not on the Eastern Seaboard are just about at there wits end with the "evil empires".

At some point MLB has to find a way to slow these 2 teams down from just getting all the big players and signing them to these outragious contracts. It's not fair to about 85% of the rest of the teams.

A big effect right now is that agents for free agents (Scott Boras, ect.) expect their clients to get these big contracts that the Yankees & Red Sox hand out and expect the other teams to do the same.  It's going to get to a point in a couple of years where there will only be the same 6-7 teams that will be able to sign the stars and in turn they will make the playoffs every year.

There really needs to be some kind of cap at some point or else the Yankees or Red Sox will be in the World Series every year and at some point that is going to turn most of the rest of the country off of baseball for good and the other teams will be loosing money.
I know I didn't watch the World Series near as much as usual because it involved the Red Sox.

The Red Sox & Yankees can get away with it now because most teams are still making money but that is going to change soon if there is not something done to even the playing field.

What really grinds my gears
  1. Mark May and Lou Holtz giving college football "expertise"; still waiting for Holtz' official Florida senate announcement, and still waiting for Mark May to play in traffic.
  2. Ron Santo's broadcasting.
  3. Another Red Sox World Series.
  4. Ohio State in anything, Oklahoma in anything.
  5. The BCS picking KU over Mizzou.
  6. Nick $aban and $abanation.
  7. 78-84.
  8. The realization that this offseason we won't get any better, and that we will probably suck (even in a crappy division) for the next few years.
  9. Lindsey Lohan! Lindsey Lohan, up there on stage, jumpin' around with your little outfits, up there....with your little outfits. Ya know, you're up ther jumpin' around, and I'm just sittin' there with my beer, so, you know, what the hell am I supposed to do about it? Are we gonna go out?! What do you want Lindsey? TELL ME WHAT YOU WANT!!!! Well I'll tell you what you want, you want NOTHIN'! YOU WANT NOTHIN'! Because we all know that no woman anywhere wants to have sex with anyone. And to tittleate us with any thoughts otherwise is, is, is, is just bogus.
Note: From September thru January I'm pretty much in college football mode, especially when the Cards fall out of the race; that is why I currently have so much venom toward so much CFB right now.

When I first moved to Chicago...
After growing up in StL and listening to Jack Buck and Mike Shannon, I didn't realize how great I had it until I heard Ron Santo for the first time.

Horrific.

by airhad on Dec 5, 2007 1:50 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

...and I wonder if
If its true that Santo wore sunglasses and kept his hat pulled down for weeks after the "errors" incident involving Don Young. Only took BP before the gates opened and was spotted driving home still in his uniform after the incident? Broke out with shingles and hives every time a reporter or Don Young came within 50 feet?

Was he also known to instruct minor league Cubbies in the fine art of "heel clicking" and on how to do a smack-down on Rico Carty? Ron and the "black cat on-deck" story is still a favorite.

  3.  +1 on "best baseball town"...this town is a sickening bandwagon town just like the rest.  I've never seen so many Mizzou and RedSox hats around here in my life.  Well, the Mizzou shirts will die down now.
  4.  People that complain about big contracts and "only watch college cause those kids play for the love of the game"
  5.  People treating every prospect like they're going to play like Barry Bonds on Steroids.  We can't give up our Single A Short Stop for Johan Santana!!! We can't mortgage the future!!!

in no particular order

1.78-84

  1. people that hate on the red sox because they ponied up the bucks and paid for players that were worth the money in the stretch (jd drew not withstanding)- i work with a great guy from boston, and he suffered for very many years with craptastic teams and wasn't a jacka$% about the sox winning the series in '04 or '07- and many of us were bitching about the cardinals ownership not pulling out all the stops and breaking the bank on free agents
  2. mlb hijacking the extra innings package and forcing me to swith to dircttv- this really pissed me off... and every time i think about the great service i had with dish network, i get all pissed off again!
