Willis & Miggy=Tigers?

Per MLBTR & Peter Gammons, the Florida Marlins have traded Miguel Cabrera to the Detroit Tigers for Cameron Maybin, Andrew Miller, catcher Mike Rabelo and three minor league prospects. Wow. It seems like the Fish could have gotten a lot more if they had tried to trade the 2 separately.

This is good!!!
Now with Cabrera out of the way Mo should be walking around the Lobby yelling "Third baseman for sale, who needs a third baseman, get em while he's hot!"
2/3rd's of the earth is covered by water, the other third is coverd by Jim Edmonds....when he's healthy...

Blockbuster
And well done on both sides.

As related to the Cards re: the Scott Rolen market: This makes Togers 3B Brandon Inge trade-able for bullpen help.

I will be brief.

by Alxfritz on Dec 4, 2007 6:41 PM EST   0 recs

Inge...
Great glove, subpar bat, 3 year commitment.

Pass, even though he's gonna come cheap.

Sound familar?
"Great glove, subpar bat, 3 year commitment."

Not thinking about the Cards geting him, but a potential Rolen suitor has to be interested, right? I hate to think Rolen is now in Inge territory (and I'm not convinced he is just yet), but if one could be had for a setup man or two and the other is going for a SP and a prospect, which do you think makes for a better deal?

I will be brief.

by Alxfritz on Dec 4, 2007 6:48 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

Touche
There are still quite a few teams with openings at 3B.

Still think Rolen would be more highly coveted...provided his medical records chek out ok.

In addition to Inge
Tadahito Iguchi is now apparently marketing himself as a possible third baseman.

I still think Rolen will emerge as the best of what's left to the big name-hungry west coast teams.

great glove?
Are you kidding me?! His fielding percentages @ 3rd over the last three years have been .957, .960, & .959. I would call this slightly above average at best.

don't use fielding percentage
it is of zero value when evaluating a players defense.

by azruavatar on Dec 4, 2007 7:23 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

I dunno
They got 2 ELITE prospects, Maybin is bigger than our own Rasmus and Miller better than anyone else we have...plus 4 others.
Cheeseburger in paradise.

This almost seems like a favor
to the Fish's former GM Dombrowski. Something tells me that had something to do with it.

Is it just me or is it just teams only in the American League that are willing to do big moves like these?
Of course when you have to compete against the likes of the Red Sox & Yankees I guess that's what it takes to have a chance in the playoffs. I look for the Indians to counter with a big move of their own soon.

I'm so glad the Cards are in the National League.

by KYCards on Dec 4, 2007 6:44 PM EST   0 recs

Favor?
I don't know about that.

They did, afterall, have to part with their two best prospects and there is no telling who the other 3 guys are.

Willis' is just as likely to have his arm fall off as have an effective season.

If Willis continues his downward spiral then this deal could turn UGLY for the tiggers and quick!

You do have a good point
But Miggy makes the Tigers offense rate up there with the best in the AL.

Would love to have this line-up for my team:
Granderson
Polanco
Cabrera
Ordonez
Sheffield
Guillen
Renteria
I.Rodriguz

by KYCards on Dec 4, 2007 6:52 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

I agree
Was just looking at this lineup.  Wow!

by OCCardsFan on Dec 4, 2007 6:55 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

holy schnikes
and their rotation is

bonderman
willis
rogers
verlander
robertson...

not bad, but miller could very well outpitch willis next year.

by erik on Dec 4, 2007 7:06 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

If it was your team
It'd need from TLR-ification!

Granderson
Guillen
Cabrera
Ordonez
Sheffield
Renteria
I.Rodriguz
Pitcher
Polanco

Damage in the 2-hole, pitcher 8th!  That's pretty sick no matter how you slice it.

The Tigers are in the AL
the pitcher would be the worst number 8 hitter in the league.

Hence the "if it was your team"
Meaning, if that were the Cardinals lineup, there would indeed be a pitcher.

AL Blockbusters
Part of the reason for that is that there are a lot of aging vet sluggers involved in monster deals, and they usually end up DHing which is an option that the NL teams just don't have.

is sick.

No doubt about it.

Yowsa
We could've never beaten that.

by sjoshi on Dec 4, 2007 6:56 PM EST   0 recs

We play them in 08
Man they are going to slaughter our weak pitching staff.  That line-up might be able to put 20 runs on the board against us.

Yeah if we faced that line-up in the World Series in 06 it would have been ugly.

by KYCards on Dec 4, 2007 7:02 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

"We play them in 08"
Really?  won't this be 3 years in a row that we're playing them in interleague play?

by SleepyCA on Dec 4, 2007 7:13 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

yeah seriously
& does anyone know why a majority of the interleague games are played in the AL parks? I know that there are 2 more teams in the NL, but still it seems kind of ridiculous that most of the BOB's interleague games have been on the road over the past several years.

shit thats
gonna be 3 batting practice games ,they have three lefty in there rotation think they would part with robertson  he looks a hell of a lot better than cliff the lefthanded KIP WELLS lee.

by cm1000 on Dec 4, 2007 7:22 PM EST   0 recs

speaking of the kipper
he's marketing himself as a set-up man now.
per Crasnick on the ESPN live blog.

"* Kip Wells isn't likely to attract much interest as a starter after going 7-17 with a 5.70 ERA for St. Louis, so his agents, Alan and Randy Hendricks, are marketing him as a set-up man this winter. Wells has always had a strong arm, and the hope is he might blossom in a new role."

he has a really small sample size as a reliever, but there were notable differences in his K/BB ratios.  139 ip sp, 99/71 and in 23 ip as rp, 23/7.  but only a slightly lower babip as a reliever.   i think we should still stay the hell away, but interesting.  he could fit the "failed starter with plus stuff mold"

it's a smart move
Do setup for a year or two, then if you're any good at all (or have good luck) market yourself as a closer and make the big bucks again...

Other players per mlbtr
The three previous unnamed minor leaguers going from Detroit to Florida are pitchers Burke Badenhop, Eulogio de la Cruz, and Dallas Trahern,  Going by Kevin Goldenstein's Tigers prospect list,  they gave up their #1, #7, and #11 propects and Miller, who isn't on the list due to major league experience but would probably be #3.

Marcus Thames, Brandon Inge, and Chad Durbin are now on the block.

willis the next randy moss?
better team, more excitement, unstoppable?

glad to not be in american league :)

by lindqja on Dec 4, 2007 7:31 PM EST   0 recs

So let's see here...
Seems to me like the Tigers basic plan is:
  1. Pay way over slot in the draft while extending the middle finger to Bud.
  2. Use the resulting strong farm system to land big time studs via trade.
  3. If said studs can be signed reasonably, then great. If not, take the two draft picks when they walk.
  4. Go back to #1 with extra draft picks
  5. Lather, rinse, repeat.
But of course, we can't afford to sign any $3 million dollar players in the draft, that money is better spent on replacement level shortstops and middle relievers in their late 30's.

random
If I was a Tiger fan... I would be cautiously elated.  The possible fly in the ointment being that the prospect of whut-you-talkin-bout Willis throwing his arm out seems real to me.
He is vivacious, entertaining, good for baseball, and seems to be a great guy.  But his pitching form reeks of early burn out.  Shades of Mark the Bird F, for Tiger fans of old.

As a Cardinal fan (and part-time Yankee and RedSox hater)I am 100% elated.  Leyland is perfect to keep the egos in check, and that offense could score 1,000 runs.  Wow.

* re Kip...I wish him all the best and I have a hunch he WILL do well in a set-up role.

** re Scotty (sigh) I have been thinking all along he will end up in LA (dodgers)

I wish we had made this deal..
We just turned into the Pirates. Argh..
The Red Blazer

by Red Blazer on Dec 4, 2007 10:39 PM EST   0 recs

Really?
The equivalent would have been Rasmus, Wainwright, and three good pitching prospects (say, Boggs, Garcia, and Walters). That would have been fine with you? 'Cause that looks insane to me.

And that's only assuming that the Marlins would have viewed those prospects on par with the ones they gave up.

by Forsch31 on Dec 4, 2007 11:55 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

+1
and we'd probably have to sweeten that deal with Anderson as well...which makes it more insane.

This trade would have been
very stupid for the Cardinals. That is basically our entire farm.  Then we would have an tired SP and one more big bat, with no chance of anything coming from the minors. Who replaces Edmonds when he is traded or retires? Do we just keep cycling in converted 4th outfielders? Would you rather have Willis in five years, or Wainright and Boggs?

It frustrates me to see people jump down the management's throat everytime they don't make the blockbuster trade. We are not the Yankees, we can't just buy every big name out there. We have to have a plan, and that plan is the farm system for now.

Welcome back Tony, adios Kip.

If the Cards hade made that deal....
We wouldn't sniff the playoffs for the next 5 years or so.
