Cardinals hire new Assistant GM

Cards name MLB exec. as assistant GM
ASSOCIATED PRESS
12/03/2007

John Abbamondi left the baseball commissioner's office on Monday and was hired as assistant general manager of the St. Louis Cardinals.

He replaces John Mozeliak, who was promoted to general manager on Oct. 31.

Abbamondi spent the last four seasons working for Major League Baseball in New York, most recently as senior director of labor economics. Abbamondi with teams on salary arbitration, player contracts and negotiations, and revenue sharing.

"We are excited to add someone with a large amount of background and expertise," Mozeliak said. "John brings a lot of experience to the organization, not only in arbitration matters, but also in contract valuation and many other skills that will add greatly to our baseball operations."

Well,
at least they've gotten this take of care so they can now focus on getting us some STARTING PITCHING.
On with the youth movement!

Italians
I think that DeWitt may simply be planning to build a team around Italians, or at least Italian names.  We've got LaRussa, Abbamondi, they spoke to Antonetti, maybe they'll bring Pagnozzi back to do, um, something.

Am I overreacting?
Is anyone else worried that his specialty is contract valuation and he worked for the same office that gave us the slotting recommendations for last year's draft?  I was really hoping that we could move away from signability as a factor in our draft plans.  This does not encourage me.

I am jumping to conclusions based on a four sentence biography.  It does however fit the Cardinal mold.

"Labor Economics"
So is this the guy in the commissioner's office who said that Zito's deal, and every other shit deal in the past few years was good for baseball?

Can we trace back the $8 beers to him?  I've been looking for someone to blame and take out my ire on for a long time...Boras is too yeasty - I mean easy.

beer!
$8 isnt really that bad. They are 24 ounces, so essentially $4 for a 12 ounce beer. I've seen beers that expensive at bars, but now your at a damn Cardinals game. Suck it up and learn the art of pre-drinking!

But anyways. Sounds alright... I guess? I'm graduating with a economics degree in less than two weeks so I like economists.

Welcome back Tony, adios Kip.

Bro,
if you're paying $4 for a beer in college and your getting an economics degree, I'd ask for your money back.  :)

Just kidding.  Congrats.

In the 1970s they would let you
bring one of those Coleman jugs into the stadium, full of whatever you wanted.  We used to bring in a gallon jug full of 7 and 7, buy a general admission ticket for $3.50, go sit up in the top row of the upper deck (on a Wednesday night in 1978 when there were about 14,000 people in the whole stadium), smoke a joint and enjoy the game ... as much as you COULD enjoy a late-70s Cardinal team, of course.

Yeah, I still get a little teary thinking about those days.

From all I've read
I'm very pleased with this pickup. He's only been in baseball since 2004 but seems like a super smart guy.

Brian Walton has a pretty thorough profile.

His nickname in the Navy was Eggplant.
