Spring Training worth it??

This is the first time I've ever had the real chance to hit up Jupiter. Anyone that has gone there before: is it worth the trip? I have a place to stay for free, so that's not a problem. I'm not worried about it being "family friendly", just down for some baseball.

It's gotta be better than shovelling ice that I've been doing the past three days.

Well
if the alternative is shoveling snow, then just about ANY trip to Florida is worth it.  Baseball included....forget about it.

Yeah dude,
it's a fun time. Especially if it's not going to cost you a bunch it's pretty cool to have (relatively speaking) so much access, and there's not a bad seat in Roger Dean.

You're a Cardinals fan, so you'll enjoy yourself. It's a great to take it in just when you think you can't stand there being no baseball anymore.

A Great Trip
I went back in 2005 and had a great time.  It's nice to get away from the cool weather of early March and  like plh903 said,  there are no bad seats at Roger Dean Stadium.

Just make sure you take a laptop and stay somewhere with WiFi so you can do a diary on it!

Definitely
Let us all share the experience with you.

It has been my dream for some time to go to Jupiter for ST, so I know I would be up for all the details!

Go for it!
I did it in 2006 (thereby causing our boys to win the WS, I might add), and it was a hoot.  And if you have free lodging you'd be stupid not to go.

If
I had an opportunity such as that, I would be there in a heartbeat.  Sunshine and baseball, what's not to love?

spring training
I have been going to Spring Training every year for the past 10 years....and it is my favorite vacation every year.  The sunshine is great, the players are much more relaxed and personable, the seats are better....and the golf courses near the parks are great as well.   You will not regret it!

great time
I moved to South Florida in February of '06, and although I miss St. Louis a ton during the regular season, Spring Training is one of my favorite times to be down here.

Roger Dean's gates open at 10:00.  Autographs are very easy to get.  I even got Bob Gibson's last year.

Also, some visiting parks are within driving distance, like the Mets, Dodgers, and Orioles.

accomodations
Are decent, affordable accomodations tough to come by?  Anybody who's been have any suggestions about where to stay?

Ditto
to what everyone else has said.  In addition, I'd offer this bit of advice for anyone else going as a primarily "Cardinals" or "Spring Training" vacation: stay in Abacoa if possible.  Roger Dean Stadium is in a development within Jupiter called Abacoa.  There are restaurants and bars as well as lots of condos and apartments.  If you can stay in one of these condos or apartments, its well worth it (even if you have to pay a little more) because the Stadium is literally two blocks away (or across the street, depending on where you stay.  I think Wednesday night is when the players go out in Abacoa (blocks from the stadium) -- its wild to be hanging out at a bar and walk past a table full of the starting rotation.  Or to see Chris Duncan walking around with a dirty white T-shirt and with chew spit dribbling down his face while smoking cigarettes and hitting on the girl with the biggest boobs in the place.  (seriously . . . I was jealous)  Autographs are easy -- I was actually waiting by the fence as the players were walking in and when I wasn't paying attention, Grady Little took the ball from my hand and signed it.  We played catch with that ball for the rest of the trip.

I went in 2006, and although MRedBirdFreak takes credit for it, I'm sure it was MY presence that helped the Cards win the series.  Mr. Freak, we should plan a joint trip either this year or next year to revive that karma . . .

Wow.
Just, wow.  If I ever get serious about writing a novel, it sounds like I should hang out in a bar in Abacoa one of those Wednesday nights.

You bet!
I couldn't agree more - for a Cardinals fan, I'd say that Spring Training is one of the best experiences you can have.  The morning practices are fun to watch, and you can get up close.  The games are also pretty great, especially since the seats are so close, and relatively cheap.  If you get a chance, sit on the lawn in right field for a game - I think tickets were 10 bucks or so.  Also, check out the "expensive" seats.  One day, we went about 20 minutes before the game and were able to find seats two rows up from home plate for about 22 bucks.  Not quite as posh as the green seats at Busch, but not too bad!  And the players are fairly approachable, although some of the bigger names stay away.

Either way, Ray Lankford is right - stay in Abacoa, if you can.  It's right in the middle of everything, and there's a decent golf course nearby.  VRBO.com or vacationrentals.com should have some options open.

Best of luck, and I'm jealous!

Also think about Arizona
I realize the Cardinals aren't there but Arizona is a great vacation. I would be willing to bet it is half the price Florida is. Plus you get to see a lot of teams you don't normally get to see during the season. Staying in Phoenix you are close enough to go to any stadium you want to. Also its worth making the drive down to Tucson. Its a fun town. In phoenix the best stadium is probably the one in sunshine (i believe thats the town's name). The brewers and I think the Rangers play there plus you get to drive by the Arizona Cardinals new stadium which is unlike anything I had ever seen before. HoHoKam park (the cubbies park) is probably the worst stadium to watch a game, assuming you are sitting on the outfield hill. Tickets are between 5-10 bucks and you can get a nice hotel for about 80 bucks.

ST is absolutely fantastic
i went in 2006 (don't listen to mdredbird up there - I was the one who got them those rings!) and it was a blast. actually went with my mom. we stayed at the jupiter beach resort, which i think was nice (good accommodations, on the beach) but overpriced. saw 3 games in 3 days.

i would definitely recommend going. no question about it. sun, beach, sneak preview of baseball. how are you questioning this?

so the real issues are when to go and where to stay. basically, if you go early march, you're going to see almost exclusively guys who are either going to be minor contributors to the mlb club, or not make it - especially on the hitting side. you do get to see more guys, though, and especially more pitchers, because early on pitchers are only going a couple innings. later in march, first of all it will be warmer, second, you'll see the real major league team playing a good portion of the game, and pitchers going 80 pitches or so. so it's really up to you what you want to do. i enjoyed going early my first time, but wouldn't mind going later next time.

there's also the question of where to stay. let me start with: there is NOTHING to do in jupiter after dark. the baseball is great, the beach is great, but from dinner on it's very slow. you'll probably need to rent a car anyway, so my advice would be to consider staying in west palm beach rather than jupiter. it's about 40 minutes away, so getting to a noon game is still pretty easy, and then there's at least something to do at night. plus in west palm beach you're within driving distance of ft. lauderdale if you actually want something decent to do, instead of just something.

one more thing - i took some time before i went to learn a little about the cards' better prospects; not a ton, but enough to recognize names and be able to recall the buzz about individual players. a few perusings of future redbirds before the trip would be time well spent.

does this mean boras is human?

and yes,
that's true, i wasn't counting abacoa. but that's a pretty tiny area, right? i mean, i never went out there, and from the comments i guess wednesdays would be cool, but i can't imagine going down there for four days and hanging out in abacoa the whole time.

You are right
Abacoa is tiny -- maybe 8 square blocks.  And while there aren't a lot of people out and about after dinner on most nights (usually a small crowd in one of the three or four bars) I still had a blast.  I believe Wednesday nights are the fun nights in Abacoa, but just ask around.  We asked a bar tender in Abacoa where hot spots were for each night.  West Palm Beach is fun too -- I actually had my picture taken with Edmonds at "The Yard House."

I guess it just depends on what you want -- we were going for a vacation described as "as-much-Cardinals-as-we-could-cram-into-a-week-with-as-much-booze-as-possible."  Ya know; feeling like we were always in the bleachers.

I went in 2003
To be honest I didn't like Roger Dean...that being said. ST is a blast. Go this year to Dodger town and see the Cards there (last year for Dodger town.)

The Cactus league is much more enjoyable...or at least not a damp.

Vero Beach is a must see
I second the sentiment about Dodger town.  To me, Vero Beach is what I dream of when I think of spring training.  It is a much more intimate setting, complete with old guys cooking brats on a big grill out in the open while they drink beer.  I seem to have vague recollections of a beachfront bar and grill....

I posted this last year....
Cayronut wrote earlier asking about information on Spring Training.  I fired off a slap dash response while trying to get things done at work.  I promised a more thoughtful and well linked response, so here is my attempt at providing that.  My first piece of advice is that you can do this on your own.  I haven't looked at the Cards packages, but I can imagine that they are high end and won't address your needs as an individual.  Unless they are offering some very cool activities for only package participants, like bp off of Gibson, I would shy away.
The Cards train in Jupiter, Florida, a small community which is twenty-five minutes north of West Palm Beach, Florida.  There are two main highways in Florida that run north and south, the first is 95 and the second is the infamous Florida Turnpike.  Unless you  absolutely cannot afford it, I would recommend that you take the Pike for all your travels, especially between the hours of 7 AM to 10 AM and from 3 to 7 PM at night.  95 becomes the world's largest parking lot between those hours.  If you have a transponder from another turnpike system, it might work down there, call and ask.  My Illinois one works out here in Masschustuess  The toll from West Palm to Jupiter is $1.20 one way.  Check at Floridasturnpike.com for more information.
If you are flying in, there are a couple of airport options.  The best option is West Palm Beach, Florida, as it is the closest, usually the cheapest, and is quite easy to get in and out of.  Fort Lauderdale is an hour south and Miami is an hour and half south of Jupiter at the absolute minimum.  I cannot recommend or stress enough that West Palm is your best option.
On the accommodation front, I ran an expedia search for Jupiter and found four or five hotels, all of which seemed relatively new.  Jupiter is a new area, so most of the hotels should be clean and new.  The next town south is North Palm Beach Gardens, which has some new hotels, restaurants and a mall.  It also has relatively easy access to the beach and it right on the pike and 95.  The hotels there range from traveler no frills to your slightly more luxury but still road motels.  The cheapest I found hotels was in the $130 range.  I know where these hotels are and they are areas I would feel comfortable letting my wife stay in.
Let's talk baseball.  The Cardinals share their facility with the Florida Marlins.  It consists of Roger Dean Stadium, a very nice facility, and ten practice fields.  While most people think of Spring Training games, the real work of Spring Training occurs on these fields which are open to the public.  The Cardinals actually make it pretty easy and enjoyable to watch practice.  There are bleachers at the center fields and there are vendors that sell food, drink and souvenirs.  (Though, you can bring in your own, there ARE NO gates or admission fees.)
So what are you going to see on these fields?  The center fields are dedicated to your starters and their drills.  One field will be batting practice, one will be fielding drills, and one will be pitchers working on either fielding or something else.  On the outer fields, the rookies, minor leaguers and roster fillers will be working on their skill sets and trying to impress.  My best advice is to print a roster off the internet so you can follow who is wearing what number.  Interaction with the players is almost guaranteed.
Once practice gets done, about 12, you can head to one of the beaches on the Gold Coast, or head down to Palm Beach and do some high end shopping.  Just kidding about the shopping, keep away from that.

I'll take questions......

Degenerate Question...
Do they serve beer at the practices or can you BYOB?
