nothing to do with hot stove

If you were an owner of an NL team, would you complain about the uneven division of teams?  In the NL you have a 1 in 16 chance of playing in the World Series.  In the AL you have a 1 in 14 chance.  All things being equal you win a world series every 32 years.  In the AL it is every 28 years.  Besides the competitive difference, playoff and world series shares factor in a financial difference as well.  I realize that the division is set up this way for scheduling purposes, but I think I might resent this arrangement a little if I owned an NL team. To take it further, in the case of the NL Central vs. the AL West, the difference becomes even more significant. Assuming my math is correct (which is a big assumption), with all other things being even an AL West team has over an 34% chance of making the playoffs. Compare that to a NL Central team which has a 24.3% chance of making the playoffs. That is almost a 10% difference. Carrying this through the playoff progression, Odds of making it into the League Championship Series: AL West - 17% chance, NL Central - 12.5% chance. Odds of making it into the World Series: AL West - 8.5% chance, NL Central - 6.25% chance. Odds of winning the World Series: AL West - 4.25%, NL Central - 3.1%
