Rolen to Brewers/Edmonds to Texas?

Rumors not yet heard:

apparently, the Brewers have had internal discussions regarding acquiring Rolen. This doesn't seem to make a whole lot of sense unless Braun moves to LF, but it's a rumor I haven't heard yet. Who would they offer in return? If the Cards eat some of Rolen's salary, then Capuano could be available. This doesn't seem very likely, even ignoring the fact that intra-division trades are rare, but I'm bored and interested in any Cardinals-related discussion not involving TLR's DUI/Silva/Lohse/or SS.

Apparently the Rangers are looking for a CF since they missed out on Hunter, aren't very interested in Rowand, and aren't getting anywhere with Crisp until Boston finishes with its negotiations for Santana. Candidates apparently include Pierre, Baldelli, and Edmonds. Pierre seems stupid because of the money and years, Baldelli's value is completely unknown at this point, so that leaves Edmonds. I would think that the Cards want Edmonds to retire as a Cardinal, and he's a 10-5 player and might very well veto a trade to TX, but again... I'm bored. I can't imagine that TX would offer much in the way of propects or valuable MLB-ready talent, and the Cards don't have much OF depth with Encarnacion out and Ankiel still a relatively unknown quantity, but stranger things have happened.

Neither
would happen.

The very idea
that so many teams are having conversations about Rolen, and that TX and SD have had conversations about Edmonds tells you there's a lot of $$ available in baseball. At the beginning of the offseason I was skeptical that even Rolen might be available. Now I'm starting to believe not only that he's available, but that he might be worth something as well.

Cabrera
What would it take to get Miguel?  Make a run at him, and then Rolen would really be worth something.  At least he could be moved.

i cant understand
why any self respecting Cardinal fan would believe any thing a flub fan writes.

the only way Jimmy is gone is if Rasmus has a batshit crazy spring like Albert did in 01. and the only teams Jimmy will play for are on the west coast that have a chance of making the playoffs. there is absolutely zero chance Jimmy will spend his final year in baseball losing 100 games in the heat of Texas.

although
i agree with the Jed point, mlbtraderumors hasnt been the worst site to go for rumors..Of things thatget mentioned he is quick to dismiss the false and usually has most of what gets out...

I however doubt either move..unless they go to the giants cause they like old overpriced guys on the decline.

reading comprehension...
... i specifically said on both rumors that i didn't consider either trade to be likely, and that i posted them out of boredom and interest in a non-"should we acquire Jack Wilson" discussion. i don't believe that either trade will occur.

however, i do believe that Brewers have had "internal discussions" regarding Rolen. i'll bet just about every team in baseball has. and i also believe that TX has considered going after JED. i don't consider the final trade probabilities of either to be (esp. JED), but they are certainly non-zero. in any case, neither i (nor mlbtraderumors) suggested that these deals were likely. merely that internal discussions have taken place in Milwaukee and Arlington. that certainly is believable.

also, it's hard to be down on mlbtraderumors as a news aggregator, since 95% (or more) of their sources are published newspaper/magazine articles, as are both of these.

no offense intended kindred
my words offended you & i'm sorry for that. it was not my intention to tick you off.

i've heard & read a lot of bad stuff about that site. i forget the guys name who runs it, but in the past he's had some very pro windy city columns on there. and some very anti pro Cardinal related columns on there.

personally i dont trust flub fans. when it comes to windy city fans & their ability to report rumors & the news in a fair & balanced way, i dont think they can.

any way, as for the rumors themselves, i didnt comment on rolen because like you said the Cards will not eat any part of his salary, & as of now want a "star player" in return. like the guy they got in the form of pre-injury scott rolen circa 2002. and as of right now, that's not going to happen. so does it really matter if the brew crew had internal discussions about trading for him? to us die hards no it does not. every team that wants miggie & tejada & does not get them will most certainly call MO up & see if the price has come down.

i stand by my statement about edmonds. he has full no trade protection & unless the Rangers blow the Cards away with a trade, & MO & all the owners beg & bribe Jimmy to accept the trade, he will not spend his final year in baseball playing in texas.  he's said if he's not playing in the STL, he will only play for a playoff contender on the west coast.

MLB Trade Rumors...
...simply posts links to sports and newspapers columns written by professionals covering either the team or Major League Baseball. Whoever runs that site doesn't come up with the information by himself, but does tend to embellish them a bit in rewriting the information. Still, the information there is far more dependable than something "a flub fan" would write.

The Edmonds rumor comes from ESPN's Jayson Stark, who says that because the Red Sox have put all Coco Crisp talks on hold until the Santana trade talks are done, teams are making alternative plans. He mentions, specifically, that "The Rangers, for instance, are believed to have kicked the tires on a group that includes Rocco Baldelli, Jim Edmonds and Juan Pierre." That's it.

The Rolan rumor comes from the Brewers blog of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinal. Tom Haudricourt, a beat reporter for the paper, simply says that Doug Melvin talked about Rolan, but moved on because the Cardinals won't eat any of Scott's salary.

Both probably did occur, but never had the chance to heat up--the Brewers aren't the kind of team to take on a salary like Rolan's, and Edmonds has a no-trade clause, so if he leaves, he'll probably want to go to a contender.

One more rumour layed to rest...
at MLB Trade Rumours: Bruce Levine of ESPN 1000 reports had it first: the Astros have signed second baseman Kaz Matsui to a three year deal worth $15-16MM

Well....wow! @@!! Is Ed Wade subbing in Houston!

Trade for Sean Rodriguez! (But please dont call him S-Rod!)

ABOUT EDMONDS
Edmonds is cool guy. edmonds is also a cardinal through and through. you are all correct in saying he ought to retire a rebird. BUT...Since he is so devoted to the organization, there is a great chance he could be moved. YES EVEN TO THE RANGERS. Jim will do what ever it takes to help the club. He knows his playing days are winding down and he's trying to snuggle up w/ the club so that when he retires he can be a cardinal. SO...whether he ends up in texas, califorina, or new york...he will still be a cardinal.

by ahahs on Nov 30, 2007 8:36 AM EST   0 recs

Wait
Are you saying that because Edmonds loves the team he'd welcome a trade to another organization because it would help out the Cards?  Like a double agent?  Playing for Texas but really only doing so because it helps the Cards?

Maybe I'm cynical, but that just doesn't sound plausible.

by Ray Lankford on Nov 30, 2007 11:12 AM EST to parent up   0 recs

yes thats exactly right!
In fact if U remember, a couple of days before the trade deadline last year the post ran an article w/ jims mug right on the cover of the sports section explaining he would gladly be dealt if it would help the team. agian hes a cool guy and an awesome cardinal. does anyone else remember that? I wish I could cite a reference.

by ahahs on Nov 30, 2007 11:50 AM EST to parent up   0 recs

Well
He's definitely a cool guy -- I saw him out at a bar in West Palm Beach last year during spring training. (before 2006 season)  He was awesome and although I totally blew his cover by asking for a picture with him, he was nice about it.

I don't remember that last year, but that doesn't mean its not true.  I think there might also be some tension between he and Tony after he put Jim on the DL and Jim supposedly didn't know anything about it.

Double Agent
Let's get him within the divison then, and tell him to screw up on purpose.  Man this could get really fun.  Watching him strick out every time and just smile, and drop all kinds of balls out in center field.
Save the Kipper don't make him go back out there.

Rolen
As much as I've been dissapointed during the past 3 seasons, I hope Rolen stays a Cardinal.
