Would you welcome Morris back?

As has already been posted, the Pirates may be interested in shipping Morris as well as Wilson to the Cardinals in trade. Is this something you would applaude or groan about?

Personally, while it's not the #1/#2 pitcher most of us would like to have added to the roster, I'd welcome the addition of Morris back to the Cards as long as the cost in trade doesn't go beyond a selection from the aforementioned trio of Reyes/Johnson/Thompson. It still looks like the guy will give you 200 innings of high 4ERA ball and carries only a couple of years. All other issues aside, do you welcome him back?

I know Anthony Reyes is not that good and I don't have a problem trading him.  Brad Thompson is so average it's not a big deal either.  Tyler Johnson is kind of a throw in.

I would hope the Cardinals would get a better veteran than Morris or at least similarly aged talent in a deal.

I think it is an awful trade for the Cardinals.  I don't care if Pitt does eat salary.

I still like MattMo's personality--probably always will. But he's the last thing this team needs.

As much as I love MattyMo, I don't want to see him back, cause it's just another old guy.  I'd love to see him come back at some point in a advisory role (much like Rodger the Rocket is doing for the Astros) but not as a player.
Save the Kipper don't make him go back out there.

I say pull the trigger.
something tells me morris would catch a second wind here. I predict suppan-ish type numbers...(thats cardinal stats, not brewer ones) and I think wilson is a fine ss. I personally feel he would thrive here as well, just lke eck did when he came here. heck while we are collecting pirates I say sign istarus to and make him the super sub ala abe nunez! The only down side for me is that I think reyes will be a good pitcher. In fact I'd be willing to bet that barring injury hes going to win somebody 15 games in 08.

He does have potential
depending on what you are looking for.  He's still only 33 which is a lot younger than the options that were getting kicked around earlier of Glavine, Schilling, Lieber, etc.....  Since the beginning of 2001 he's averaged 200 innings a year.  The only pitcher we had do that was Wainer.  Look at what Duncan has done in the past with semi productive vets.  This situation kind of would be like it was with Woody Williams only Matty Mo is a couple years younger than Woody when we got him.  I'm not saying he can be an ace again but with a little touch of Duncan magic we should have a #3/#4 that will take the ball 30-34 times and gice us 200 innings with an ERA under 5.  Doesn't look to bad right now considering what we've been used to.

Rather
I would rather buy a guy like Morris.  I don't want to trade for him unless it is some prospects who don't look that great.

If I do the math right Woody was about 34 or 35 when he joined STL so it would be about the same age as Matt.

+1
While I don't think that Reyes will pan out while wearing Cardinal red, I think we could still get something a little better (& cheaper) for him.  I would be all for signing Morris if he were a FA, but to give up something of decent value, I'd have to pass.

Sure...
his $10.5 million contract for '08 would have to stay in Pittsburgh however...
Who needs Antonetti? Give Luhniak a chance!

$12.5 million
he gets his $2 million signing bonus at the end of his contract.

Yeah...
is that the Pirates' obligation? Man, you have to wonder if Littlefield wasn't secretly working for the Giants...

No...
The last thing this team needs is another 4/5 starter.  They are boiling over with them already.

The only pitcher the Cards need to worry about aqcuiring is a legit top o' the rotation guy.  If he can't be had...then you save the money/trade pieces until he can.

The only way this makes sense at all is if all the Pirates require is Schumacher, Thompson, or someone of that ilk.

Yes
I would welcome him back regardless of whether I thought it was a good deal.  I think he could be a back end of the rotation guy for us and while I don't want that much salary eaten up it is for only 1 year.

if Littlefield hadn't been
such an idiot, and had gotten Sabean to pay 2-3M, and then the pirates had been willing to pay 2-3M, I'd say yes.  As it is, no.

If we do get him back, Piniero gets to keep #35.

I also think TJ could put up numbers almost as good as MM if he was given the opportunity that Reyes wasted last year...

Why does Pineiro
get to keep #35?

there has to be some symbolic punishment
for leaving the organization that drafted him for money.  Morris was my favorite cardinals pitcher, and I was quite angry with him when he left (as were others).

I'm not fimiliar with what he was offered

we offered 2Y/$13M
with a $7M option for the third year (the same deal that Carpenter accepted, except for an $8M option) so although we lowballed it wasn't an atrocious lowball. He was definitely worth more than that, as the market was in the process of transforming and making everyone worth much more than they used to be, but Morris was one of the first of the massively bad pitching contracts handed out in the last few years.

So at the time, it seemed to me that he was being greedy and that Sabean was crazy (which turned out to be true; Sabean is very lucky that Littlefield bailed him out).

...MattMo shudda stayed at home....
Before the Giant$ deal went down for MattMo, I figured we would add an incentive clause or two to the 2y/13M that would cinch the deal and Matt would stay home to pitch with Carp/Sup/ et. al. We didnt and as we know, he did'nt.

It bothered me too when he left, but things were getting so nut$, I guess now I cant fault him. His grandkids great-grandkids are set for life!

What was his velocity like at the end of 07'?

What if...
we traded Reyes,Thompson, and Johnson for Matty Mo, Jack Wilson, and money.

Then I would be interested. Morris could definately be a #3 guy if he reunited with Duncan.

Plus, I am thinking Looper will have a tough time going injury-free after his first full season starting. We could use the solid depth Morris provides.

if we give up those 3 pitchers
We better get Bay or Snell in return.

They wouldn't trade Snell for that
package, he's only due $500k.  Jason Bay, on the other hand still has $13.25 M coming to him the next 2 years.

If we got Bay (which I don't think we would), along with Morris and Wilson, I'd think you'd have to start shopping Looper and Ankiel.

oh, i agree
And I really hope that Mo wouldn't be so dumb as to trade 3 young pitchers in a salary dump move.

Picking up Morris and Wilson from the pirates would be an act of charity even if we didn't give them anything in return...

What about
Looper, Thompson, and Johnson for Morris and Wilson?

Morris is more solid than Looper, and we get a SS.

We keep Reyes (for whatever reasons), the Pirates lose salary and get pitching.

interdivisional
I would like the acquisition of Matty Mo and Wilson for cheap but we cannot trade Reyes to someone in the Central. His best days are ahead of him. We need a SS and we need a SP who is not injury prone like the rest of our staff so this makes sense, but hold on to reyes for something better. I think we're bluffing to get Eck to come back for cheap. tho I don't know about matty mo, I could it happening.

I still think we should try to get a pitching prospect from the chiSox for Reyes after he one hit them. plus Kenny Williams is not gunshy and would take a chance on Reyes.

Can we spread the rumor that Matheny is gonna be the next pitching coach?

Looper
will have a full off season to get ready the only way I make this deal is if the pirates include Nady to play Rf then we would have to add somehing or eat all the money..
