Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Bennett's Option Declined

Not that's it's relevant, but just thought I'd share.  I don't know what this means as far as who they will get to back up Molina.  I, personally, think it's a moot point, and we could put one of those throw back things little kids use for all I care.  We'll see I suppose.

I Like the line about the throwback thing.

I don't have too much of a comment here.  Back up catchers generally cost nothing unless you are Henry Blanco.  The Cubs are paying him like $3.25 million this year.

Is Anderson ready to move up?  He will not play a lot so I would not want to stop is progression.  I think AB's are probably more important at this time so I guess I have no real opinion on a back up catcher.

Anderson
Says in the article that the team doesn't think he's ready to make the jump

I wonder what happens
when a MLB fastball hits one of those little throwback things?  Be funny to see once.

yadi's brother jose
is a FA. He's not better then Bennett, as I understand, but most backup C's stink anyway. I could see the Molina Bros. doing the catching together in 08

I looked this up the other day
(yes, I was bored beyond belief) Probably watching a World Series game at the time. Jose is a little better than Bennett, both behind the plate and hitting. He's not good, of course, but he's better than Bennett.

Brandon Yarbrough
for a dark horse canidate, if the organization views him as a career back-up it's not completely out of the question.

Posada
Get Jorge to back up Yadier.  I say 3 years at 40 mil gets it done.  What do you say, kids?
Let me get this straight...Rowand over Pujols??? Really, Tony?

Nah
I really want the Cardinals to spend that much on a backup C.

Backups
Here is how I see it going down for the backup catcher.

Once Team USA is done on their trip the front office will ask themselves if Anderson is ready.  Most likely answer is that he is not yet ready.  At this point Molina will be contacted unless he is already under a contract, if he comes cheap enough (probably making less then his little brother) then he gets the job.  Next the Cards will look at Stinnett or another washed up catcher just looking for a few bucks and a few more ABs.  Anything to keep the backup costing less then 1M.

Interestingly bad idea
I just had the most off the wall idea for a backup catcher.

Mike Matheny

He won't have to play everyday, he can continue to mentor Yadi, he can learn to coach, assist with video, etc.  Worth a shot but I seriously doubt he would take it, want it or that the club would want to risk his injury flaring up.

Done
I thought he is officially done?  He realized his concussion will never allow him to play again.  I also thoght he was coaching somewhere and liking it.

knoedler..
a six year minor league free agent with Giants. Cheap, coming off a career year, a great team player, good catcher, and a Central Illinois boy (springfield).
go crazy folks..........

I've been advocating
Todd Greene for some time. Decent bat, decent defensively. Available on a split-contract, most likely.

todd greene
the new kelly stinnett, aka the backup catcher you want your team to sign every winter and they never do. at this rate, we'll sign him when he turns into a total pumpkin.

Don't rely on me, though
Every year, I've said we should sign Jamey Wright to a split contract for rotation depth and he's not been of great use to anyone.

(He'd have been better than Keisler, though.)

Meeeemories....
Thanks for that August 2006 series against the Cubs, Sno-Cones. We wouldn't have made the playoffs without.

Bennett
hit .250 last year.  That's way too high for a catcher, especially a backup, on a Tony LaRussa team.
